I found some fabric with dragonflies all over it that I loved so I took one and enlarged it to make a template for these dragonflies. I also added flowers, leave and vines on the edges that were fused down applique and then a small blanket stitch around each piece. At the top is the name of the child who will recieve it but since that won't be until Christmas, I can't reveal it now. LOL This was a very fun quilt to make. I will put the printed dragonfly fabric on the back and bind it with the same purple as the sashing. I just am not sure how to quilt this. I don't do very well at stippling and am at a lost as to how to start the quilting. Can I get some suggestions? Sending it out to have it quilted is not an option.
Funny thing about this quilt...when we saw the fabric, we thought it was butterflies until I was halfway finished with the quilt top and was showing it to my sisters and brother. They all said it was dragonflies so I had to change my mind concept on it. LOL I like it no matter what the bugs are!! Thanks for your help!!! |
well you could echo quilt around the dragonflies and flowers. once or more. your choice. if only once, i'd also do straight stiching around the background to anchor the whole block. lovely quilt!!

Oh it's really cute! Your appliques look stunning.
Butterflies or Dragonflies...it's beautiful whatever you call them. I love the colors.

That is beautiful....love the applique!!
Verrrrrry pretty!!
Very nice! I was wondering though, does the child read this board? :)
Very pretty quilt. I love the colorful butterflies and flowers. Great job.
Very cute.
Beautiful !!!
that's adorable!!!
I would say Butterflies. Dragonflies have a longer body and their wings are closer to the head.
Either way, it's beautiful! |
Oh so cute!!! Love the colors -- that is one lucky child!!
Very pretty!! I think they look like butterflies!!
Very nice. I love bright, cheerful quilts.
P.S. Looks like butterflies to me. |
I'd go for "echo quilting" about 1/2" apart around your lovely applique.
Beautiful job! |
very pretty

It is beautiful whether butterflies or dragon. Not sure of how to quilt it unless you could find a small butterfly and flower template to do in the corners.
Beautiful, looks like butterflies to me. Your applique stitches are perfect. Wonderful job on this one.
I would have called them butterflies, but it's a very cute quilt no matter what they are!
Beautiful.

You could do a small stipple around the appliques to make the background recede and the drgonflies and flowers pop. Or you could do a Mactavish around them.
Beautiful appliques and great colors  |
I really like the colors on the white. I want to try applique on my next quilt. Looks like fun.

How pretty is that! It will be beautiful when it is quilted!
I love this quilt!
Great job. It's beautiful, no matter what kind of 'fly' it is. I like the idea of the echo quilting, also.
Who cares if it,s butterflies or dragonflies, they both look great. I like it (them) with the flowers. Looks great! Thanks for sharing. :)

Start quilting by doing in the ditch on the sashings to stabilize quilt and each block. Also baste the outside edge of layers to avoid stretching as you machine quilt. Then outline each applique. At that point you will be able to tell if you need more quilting. The easiest is to do the echo quilting like a previous member said using your free motion foot as a guide as you go around each applique.
this is nice! The colors are just vibrant. :!:
I envision a small scallop Machine stitch abaout 3 or 4 along each of the sashings around each block and stitch around the dragon fly or flower about 1/4 inch .Each scallop would be 3 to 4 inches depending on the size of your block. If this is enough quilting for the type of batting you are using, I think this would be sufficient.
