Today I delivered my moms B-day quilt to her. while there mom pulled out grannies hand pieced and quilted treasure(to me). Grannie passed 4 years ago but her love of quilting passed to me. Mom keeps this stored away, that breaks my heart. Grannie was colorblind in the worst way. We used think she was like a dog and only seen black and white, so quilting was very hard for her. If someone wasnt there to tell her the colors matched she just threw things together. Any way here it is!

I've never seen this block before anybody have any idea what its called?

What a great memory of your Grannie.

pocoellie 01-31-2011 01:34 PM

Well, I think your grannie did a terrific job, regardless of her "disability". What an inheritance.

Floralfab 01-31-2011 01:37 PM

Your Granny was a great quilter. So nice you have a rememberance made by her.

Grandma's are the greatest people in the world (you can see mine right there in my icon)!

I think the quilt is beautiful, and the more I look at those blocks the more design possibilities I see.

But isn't that what quilting is all about?!?! Spreading their love through quilting; I think it is wonderful because it was made by your grannie. Who knows what future generations will think of our handiwork  Hopefully they will appreciate our quilts as they were meant to be; filled with love. It doesn't really matter whether colors match, coordinate, seams match; the love is there.

Raggiemom 01-31-2011 02:33 PM

Gorgeous.

leatheflea 01-31-2011 02:44 PM

granof6 I totally agree, I dont always look at colors when I quilt. Sometimes I just sit the scrap box next to me and what ever I pull out I have to use. Its a little game I play, on a mission to make the ugliest quilt I think. Now if I could just get past having to have a pattern I might make it big in the art world! LOL

Sassylass 01-31-2011 02:45 PM

I think your quilt is perfect..your grannie sewed every piece with love. Can't make a quilt any nicer than that!!

Oh, what a beautiful treasure and remembrance of your Grandmother. That quilt is so well done.

Grannies are the best. I really miss mine as she did so many quilts in her little more than 100 years on this earth.

littlehud 01-31-2011 08:57 PM

What a wonderful quilt. And a family heirloom filled with wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing it with us.

What a treasure for you and your family. There is a block on Quilters Cache that looks like the block in this quilt. It is called Crown of Thorns 2.

How precious that you have this memory of your grandmother.
It's lovely.

Diane819 02-01-2011 06:28 AM

I think it's great that she added all the different colors into her quilt. It really made it hers even though she had difficulty seeing colors. Great memories!

Joan Gaddis 02-01-2011 06:45 AM

ditto of all posts!!!!

Scrap quilts are my favorites so I would like anything your talented grandmother did, even if she did just throw it together! A wonderful treasure and memory of her.

It is a gorgeous quilt with a lot more than just colours; the sentiment and message it carries will always be yours to keep. That is what makes it gorgeous in my eyes. Thank you for sharing.
