Two firsts for me today

2 Attachment(s)
I've been toying with learning paper piecing for a long time and, with the encouragement of QuiltE, plus a sale on Carol Doak's class on Craftsy, I took the plunge this week.
This morning I made my very first paper pieced block, then I made its mirror image. Next, combine the two of them into my very first mug rug. This is the front of my bird of paradise meets the colourful sea mug rug.

And this is the back.

I had issues with the binding and I never have issues with binding. Maybe because this piece was important to me. That is usually the case. The more you fret, the worse it gets.
Still, I'm pleased.
And yes, QuiltE, there will be more paper piecing in my future. Just not likely the near future.

Looks great! Love the colors and the back fabric!

Very pretty!

Yipppppppppeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Lady has launched herself into the world of PPing!

Congratulations W4Me
... great job on the maiden voyage.

How clever to do it double sided ...... Perfect coordinating fabrics for all.
Impressive!!!!!!!

works4me 02-14-2014 04:03 PM

Thank you everyone.

The front borders and back fabric are all from the same piece of fabric. It had several sections - fishies, shells and checkerboard. So they better darn well co-ordinate, or else. :)

The sea fabric was not the original fabric that the pp colours were chosen from. I decided I hated that fabric so went searching for a substitute. Fishies were too fun not to use, especially for a first attempt.

Very nice!

oksewglad 02-14-2014 04:45 PM

Nicely done.

QE likes to think she's got me converted to PP! Will do it when I "have" to, but not my favorite method. In all fairness she led me "kicking and screaming" to trying it.

Tweety2911 02-14-2014 04:49 PM

Super job and very creative doing mirror image!

Nice job! I love the bright colors together! I'm with you, I love the looks of it and will do pp if I need to but not my favorite pricing!

I like the mug rug. Your PPing is very good. You are smart to start with a simple pattern.

It's a challenge I have yet to accept. Must do, though. Great job.

works4me 02-15-2014 06:43 AM

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. Your encouragement means a lot. For many, this would have been just another quick project. For me, it was an accomplishment and an item off the craft bucket list. :)

I have enjoyed paper piecing patterns for sooo long. I have quite a few books of patterns but was always intimidated by the procedure. Kept thinking I would take a course if one of the local quilt shops offered one. They never have. But, Craftsy put one on sale and QuiltE kept nudging me so I took the plunge.
Carol Doak's class is on sale right now. At $9.99, with a e-book included, and use it whenever you want, now became the right time.

I haven't looked at the other one. Carol's method seems quite methodical and that works for me. :)

Love the fabrics you used, very nice. Don't give up on paper piecing, Carol Doak is an excellent teacher for paper piecing - I've taken a couple classes with her.

works4me 02-17-2014 07:00 AM

Thanks everyone. I now feel I can do a table runner that I've been holding off on. But, I can't find a devil pattern to make that happen. May end up diving in and designing one. In for a penny, in for a pound. :)

QuiltE 02-17-2014 07:13 AM

Go ahead ... you can do it!!!
