I wanted to share the 2 Hanky Panky Quilts I created a few years ago. These hankies belonged to my mother and grandma. I felt that it was ok to cut these beauties up instead of leaving them in a drawer neatly folded. I created something that is now hanging for everyone to see how beautiful the hankies are. My Aunt was going to give me several of her gorgeous antique hankies until she found out I would cut them up.... oh well.... :(
I made one for my mother as a surprise and kept one for myself. Mine has a few things added that were from the dances my hubby and I went to in high school; the right corner rhinestone belt buckle and magenta ribbon running thru it were from 2 different dresses for dances we attended.
Every inch (except the border) was stitched by hand with 100wt silk thread. I loved this project so much because it was all stitched by hand.
I hope you enjoy them.

This is my quilt

WOW - great ideas! I have a drawer full of hankies but don't know if I have the nerve to cut them up.

MIJul 05-04-2011 11:44 AM

I have been collecting hankies to do something like this, but haven't been able to bring myself to cut them up yet. Yours are beautiful!

gaigai 05-04-2011 11:45 AM

Beautiful! I'm definitely going to bookmark this. I have a ton of pretty hankies from my grandmother, and I like your way of displaying them better than any I have see so far. I don't have a problem with cutting them if this is the result! But I am going to keep a couple intact for future generation weddings "something old".

I have made several and given them away. They are so much fun to do.

My mom has many hankies given to her when she taught school in ND in the early '40s. They have been in her cedar chest all these years. I saw a picture in a magazine showing a wall hanging made from hankies and she agreed that it would be nice to see them displayed. Yours turned out beautiful and hopefully will inspire us to create one for her.

What a beautiful keepsake created from your treasures!

Dianemarie 05-04-2011 01:14 PM

I am printing out as photo so I can make them someday; I too have generational hankies; some to cut and some to save.
Thank you for sharing - both are beautiful !!

Absolutely gorgeous. If I would have thought they would no longer sell them I would have bought up a bunch of them. My Mom use to use them everyday in the 50s and 60s.

Lucymae 05-04-2011 02:08 PM

So pretty. I agree about using them instead keeping hidden away. I have a shoe box full...but haven't decided what to make with them, yet. Thanks for sharing..

debcavan 05-04-2011 02:10 PM

Oh my heavens are they gorgeous.

Janie Q 05-04-2011 03:41 PM

I buy hankies at yard sales, antiques malls and thrift stores. If they are damaged I get them cheap! Then I have no problem cutting them up. I have also seen brand new reproduction hankies made into different things.

jillnjo 05-04-2011 03:44 PM

Both of those little quilts are fantastic and I love the whole idea of what you did.Gorgeous.

Divokittysmom 05-04-2011 04:12 PM

I forgot to include the name of the book! It is "Hanky Panky Crazy Quilts"' by Cindy Brick.
