Cut it into 1" strips and attach to a handle and make a mop out of it.

Diane007 02-25-2012 11:30 AM

Hi rootyr
Question is this a challenge that you have to use the fabric.... or did some one special buy you the fabric...
You have had lots of good feedback...
I would love to know what you decide to do with it...
Happy sewing

pacquilter 02-25-2012 11:39 AM

If you mixed it with some bright golds and oranges it might not look so homely

sassy granny 02-25-2012 12:52 PM

With only a fat quarter , you're not going to make much out of it. I was thinking mug rug or candle mat also. You could get some orange and yellow to match and make a doll quilt out of it. Little girls wouldn't care about the color or print. They would just love it for what it was.

lfstamper 02-25-2012 12:56 PM

I was always told to keep cuuting it until u like whay you see. Then add more to it. Good luck and post when u finish please

Mom3 02-25-2012 01:34 PM

I see weather also - a tornado. How about using the twister tool on it?

Well I like it...eye of the beholder I guess. It would be good in a modern block. I would use some gray fabric and shades of yellow and orange.

You say you can't throw it out, but by the time the ice goes off Lake Ontario, who would know if you chucked it in the lake.....give it a little viking funeral. Seriously, there's something about the shape that reminds me of pansies. Perhaps something could be done with applique?

COYOTEMAGIC 02-25-2012 04:49 PM

Somebody (I don't remember who) had a saying about, There's no such thing as an ugly fabric, you just haven't cut the pieces small enough.

Do something with lots of little pieces with coordinating colors

alfosa421 02-25-2012 05:00 PM

Would a kaleidoscope patch be worth the effort?-it might make the layout of the colors more pleasing. I feel your pain

TanyaL 02-25-2012 05:25 PM

Make those ugly designs into yoyos. Use the yoyos as flower appliques. Use them as wheels on a vehicle - make fun of the fabric - don't hide it. Show case it. Use it to spell out the word UGLY in several languages- make car trash bags from it. Make a gift for an ex spouse.

Quilterfay 02-25-2012 08:14 PM

How about making the small pin wheels. Or using the colors to make flowers in a vase.

I have seen several of the Ugly fabric challenges and every one came out beautiful.

Wow, just when you thought you'd seen ugly. But I have seen truly amazingly beautiful quilts with this kind of ugly. I have no idea where to start. Cannot wait to see what you create.

Todie's Mom 02-26-2012 05:30 AM

I used my 2 yards of ugly fabric to make a beautiful rag wreath combined with other colors

glorcour 02-26-2012 05:53 AM

Yup, it is Ugly, but it would work in a scrappy quilt in small pieces with other brights. Hope you get inspired

LindaR 02-26-2012 06:10 AM

one of my guilds does this at christ time...you have to make something and then return it at the party...people come up with awesome ideas to hide the UFQ....sewing kits, purses, needle books, one girl did exactly one inch and included it a mug rug...LOL you didn't have to use the whole fQ

quiltlin 02-26-2012 06:14 AM

Make a FQ gift bag and fill it with something and give it away as a gift. Someone will love it!!!

joyce888 02-26-2012 06:16 AM

Can't tell for sure what the background color is but I would try to match it to some other fabric and cut this up as small as I could to hide it.

coopah 02-26-2012 06:20 AM

Maybe it could be part of a dog bed for the Humane Society? They use a lot of them and don't care about the fabric.

redeagle 02-26-2012 06:27 AM

I had an ugly black and gold fabric. I had it for many years because I could not find a place for it. One day I was looking for something to fill in a spot in a wall hanging and that was the perfect piece so I guess everything has a home someplace.

starlite 02-26-2012 06:53 AM

One block wonder comes to mind.

quiltingshorttimer 02-26-2012 07:50 AM

Go all Jinny Beyer and think about the colors--find something that is a "deep dark" of one of the colors (green would be my tendency) and then think about your color wheel--I'd look for a darker orange (since our New color of the year is Pantone's Mango that shouldn't be hard) and a deeper gold color too and use it for a table topper. I'm assuming you have to use it for a challenge?? Otherwise--pass it on to someone else!

laurafet 02-26-2012 07:54 AM

I would match some smaller prints to the orange, peach and ivory, cut this into strips and do a 9-patch or other strip type pattern. Look at just the swirls in each of the "flowers". Kinda cool, no?

craftymatt2 02-26-2012 08:04 AM

Seriously its not that bad, do a hot mat or pot holder, or make coasters. Good Luck

aorlflood 02-26-2012 08:20 AM

It's only ugly till you cut it up! If it's still ugly, you haven't cut it small enough! :)

annies-best 02-26-2012 08:24 AM

you are right it is ugly BUT it dies have some pretty colors i would cut it into small pieces and you can make something beautiful out of it

huntannette 02-26-2012 08:26 AM

lol time for an ugly fabric swap!!!!

Bonbonary 02-26-2012 08:35 AM

How about a mini beach wall hanging. Cut out a few of the clams & put them on the beach. The rest could be binding

paulswalia 02-26-2012 08:36 AM

They look like the butt ends of cut logs from a logging job (ask me why I know....) so I'd be tempted to make a landscape quilt stacking the "logs" in a pile and making a pretty landscape behind and above them.

Best idea yet!!!! ROFLMBO

karenpatrick 02-26-2012 08:47 AM

I agree with the advice to cut it up in little pieces and use it that way.

LindaMRB 02-26-2012 08:50 AM

small pieces, yes, to break up that incomprehensible design!
No accounting for taste?
Please show us the final. You can be surprised sometimes by things like this.

littlenell7777 02-26-2012 09:24 AM

It would be fine a Halloween quilt.

kathyd 02-26-2012 09:32 AM

I'm not sure what to do for the center, but I imagine it could be a good binding on a small quilt. That way you never see the designs (???) as a whole. I agree with the "what was the designer thinking" statement. Good luck.

ScrapQuilter 02-26-2012 09:37 AM

Maybe a wall hanging.............. something oriental............ Oriental was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the fabric....... good luck lets see what you come up with.

GagaSmith 02-26-2012 09:43 AM

Cut petals from the yellow and orange and applique them into flowers on a table runner or topper. Add some stems and leaves.

ktmo815 02-26-2012 09:46 AM

I agree with ugly! I'd cut it into smaller pieces to dilute the ugliness

cleodaisy 02-26-2012 10:07 AM

Use of ugly fat quarter

1 Attachment(s)
For a guild ugly fat quarter swap I cut a piece of fabric to trade. Soon after I used some of the leftover for the vine stem in my pic. Cut thin or tiny pieces it isn't so ugly any more.

Grannyh67 02-26-2012 10:55 AM

I agree, make pin cushions with it. Or one of the pincushion thread catchers. They are really neat and would not look bad made into that.
