I have to make a project from this ugly FQ. I have NO idea what I can do. Does anyone have some suggestions (and NO I can't throw it out) LOL

JENNR8R 02-25-2012 03:23 AM

Yep, that's pretty ugly alright. It makes me wonder what the makers were thinking. I was given an ugly fat quarter at a quilt camp one time. I thought they were giving them away because they couldn't sell them. I still have it laying around not knowing what to do with it.

I can tell you what I wouldn't do. I wouldn't fussy cut it. :) Maybe if you cut it up small enough and use it, it might not look so bad.

QuiltnNan 02-25-2012 03:34 AM

match the colors with other fabric and use it for a strip quilt.

Babs194068 02-25-2012 04:05 AM

Don't know if it would work but what about a One Block Wonder?

QuiltingCrazie 02-25-2012 04:06 AM

I got a couple in a fat quarter of the month club Im starting t think they pick out what they cant sell and send me the uglist of the bunch. Anyway Im making mug rugs out of them. With that one I would combine it with a halloween print and make some halloween mug rugs. Easy and useful

TanyaL 02-25-2012 04:09 AM

If you really don't like it you probably won't like anything you make with it. So why waste fabric trying? Everything you tried to make with it in it you'd think. "That's that UGLY FQ!" And you would be ashamed to give something away made with an UGLY FQ. Give it to Goodwill. If no one wants to buy it, they will sell it to a rag merchant.Or dust with it.

mltquilt 02-25-2012 04:18 AM

OBW sounds like a good idea since you can't throw it away. Sounds like a challenge project.

TanyaL 02-25-2012 04:32 AM

If you truly can't throw it away make a pincushion out of it - you probably don't want to make a Voodoo doll.

gsbuffalo 02-25-2012 04:37 AM

OBW would be my thought. I have never made one but the concept and the fabric I think would really look nice

Blinkokr 02-25-2012 04:48 AM

Think I would use it for a border around a mini quilt. good luck
Have a Blessed day

Maybe just cut into strips and use some pretty coordinating fabrics. Table runner? Please post picture of finished project. I would love to see what you come up with :)

Sunnie 02-25-2012 05:20 AM

Sounds like you have been given a challenge. I agree with the Halloween mug rug. Applique a large pumpkin to cover most of it...LOL

SoozeeDoozee 02-25-2012 05:26 AM

What does the reverse side look like? I found a rather ugly coin fabric in copper, gold, black on the $1 table at Hancock's last summer and bought 5 yards thinking charity quilt backing. When I pulled it out of the dryer I noticed how wonderfully pastel the reverse side was, so that's side I will use in a quilt.

sewmom 02-25-2012 05:37 AM

Someone once said(someone on here I think) There is no such thing as an ugly fabric- you just haven't cut it small enough! If it was in 1 1/2" strips in a string quilt, it would not be noticeable. And yes that FQ is definitely string-worthy!!

lillybeck 02-25-2012 05:39 AM

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I kind of like this.

MissSandra 02-25-2012 05:45 AM

I see weather in it, yes something weather related. you could really manipulate those circles

Jackie Spencer 02-25-2012 05:49 AM

Well....guess Im the odd one. I would fussy cut the individual flowers, and make a bouquet. I can see gold centers, with some black embroidery around the centers, some applique leaves, and maybe add some other flowers in fall colors. If you remove that gray back ground, I think you might like it.

bri1977 02-25-2012 05:53 AM

OBW. The fabric will be un recognizable when it's finished ANSI bet it will turn out great :)

playswithcolor 02-25-2012 05:59 AM

I would use it to try a technic or pattern you have on your to do list. Stack n slash, purse pattern you've had for years, dog bed?

stitchingcrazy 02-25-2012 06:11 AM

Make a charity pet bed/quilt or something for an animal. So long as it is warm they won't mind and it will have gone to a good cause. I agree with Tanyal whatever you make you will always "see" that fabric. Good luck whatever you decide.

GingerK 02-25-2012 06:16 AM

Oh, I like Jackie Spencer's idea! You could even put the flowers into a vase and make it all into a wall hanging. Very inventive.

Diane007 02-25-2012 06:22 AM

The inside lining of a purse, that is what I did with my challenge fabric and won.
Good luck.

rubyred 02-25-2012 06:25 AM

If you would make strip's quilt with it you would found out that you have a beautiful quilt.Take the color's that is in this material.Make a sew and flip quilt. You have about four or five differ color's.Give it to charity or make pillow cases.I help in Women and children abuse shelter home. They are glad to get anything that is home made.If you don't want it sent it to me.I will made them something out of it for the home.

TerryQuilter 02-25-2012 07:59 AM

That is one ugly FQ. That said, I think I would use it as backing on a small quilt so you don't have to look at it:rolleyes:

Crossstitcher 02-25-2012 08:07 AM

I agree with someone above use it as a lining in a tote bag or purse. Could app. eyes and nose and make pumpkins for a lap quilt.

jmabby 02-25-2012 08:11 AM

Since it is only a fq I wouldn't use it. I made a quilt top using fabric I didn't like, it still hasn't been quilted and is just laying in the quilt room. In fact I'm thinking of finishing it for the dog...........

Tartan 02-25-2012 08:12 AM

I am not sure of the size but I would do something that used the circular shapes in the fabric. I would either fussy cut the sections for the old fashioned Clam Shell pattern and mix them into other similar coloured fabrics or use a 60º ruler to make hexagons.

kathdavis 02-25-2012 08:50 AM

One Block Wonder would be great. You wouldn't even recognize it. It would make awesome flowers, very modern.

I think it is very contemporary. Make a table runner or wall hanging and give it away to someone who has that decor.

thimblebug6000 02-25-2012 08:51 AM

My original thought was to use it as your background for a pumpkin tablerunner; but now I wonder how it would look in one of Ricky Tims Convergence quilts.

Dampiper 02-25-2012 08:58 AM

Many years ago, when i made clothesfor my 5 kids, I had a piece of ugly fabric. I was making my 3rd daughter a dress & knew it neede a little 'something'. I cut a narrow strip from my ugly & stitched it to the bottom of the dress. it was beautiful. I was able to use most of the 'ugly'. Maybe you could use thin strips of your 'ugly' in a med yellow quilt or mug rug!

GwynR 02-25-2012 09:05 AM

I agree this is ugly. For me its the colors that make it that way, the pattern itself would not be bad in better colors. I like the idea of cutting it into narrow strips with some prettier fabric. A scrappy strip quilt would totally hide that fabric and is the way I would go. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

dogsgod 02-25-2012 09:07 AM

YIKES! I kinda like the voodoo doll idea!

yourstrulyquilts 02-25-2012 09:42 AM

One of those cute bags some of you make; use it for the lining! LOL

RedGarnet222 02-25-2012 09:46 AM

I would make a center block using the colors from the fabric in a small or solid print and then set it with this fabric on point. I am thinking maybe something halloweenish, like a pumpkin or a full moon with a bat. If you make the background a grey or black, it would look very spooky! Then make a treat bag for your favorite kid.

fred singer 02-25-2012 09:47 AM

wow i think that itis a fantastic fun fabric ,you can always use another green shopping bag or market bag

TShooters 02-25-2012 09:56 AM

I see raw edge applique flowers w/button centers.

You need a lot more fabric than a FQ to make a OBW. I would cut it up for a scappy quilt - the smaller the squares the better. Then you won't actually see the pattern..just the colors and they are so bad.

quilter1943 02-25-2012 10:25 AM

I agree with another response -- mix it with some other orange and gold fabrics in a Halloween/fall wall hanging. If you cut it into 2" strips and used it in a log cabin the colors would blend nicely. It's just like kittens and puppies - have you ever seen an ugly one? Have fun with it.

kateyb 02-25-2012 10:30 AM

I have made table runner, a table topper and a full size quilt from ugly fabric (as well as pretty fabric) with a block called mom's unwanted block (9 1/2" block) from "Traditional Quiltworks" magazine issue #59. It is cut small enough and combined with one other fabric that seems to cut down on the "ugly" factor. If your interested PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send directions to you.

sharon b 02-25-2012 10:40 AM

Fussy cut it- make it an applique - Bouquet of flowers ? add stems and Viola ready for spring :)
