Cut it into 1.25" and 1.5" strips, and use it in a strip quilt. I took a class at a local quilt show once where the lady had taken these varying widths of strips and sewn them diagonally onto a paper backing (she used 6.5" or 8.5" pages from old telephone books, because they tear off so easily), always using the same light (or white) color for the center strip. Then she put them together in several different patterns - amazing the variety! - and voila - a lovely quilt from ugly scraps. This fabric would make a perfect candidate. You don't even have to match colors, because the strips are so narrow, the color-clash looks interesting, rather than ugly.

Y'know, I was given a bug-ugly half yard (!!!!) for one of these challenge projects - it was medium grey mauve background with olive-brown and grey-khaki "dashes" and medium blue yuck impressionist flowers. I used it as a lining for a cathedral windows purse I made with brighter (read "far more attractive") versions of the colors for one project I submitted (the lining looked like a darker version of the purse's outside colors), and as the backing for a FQ sized quilt. I won for the cathedral window project but then they changed the rules so that in the next Ugly Fabric challenge it had to be visible on the front of the project.
I'd make a project with "attractive" versions of the colors in this fabric and use the UFQ fabric as the binding - you'll only see 1/4" to 3/8" of it, and the narrow visibility of it could lend just a little interest and movement to the rest of the project. |
Good luck! This is one ugly fq!
well....it's "challenging" all right! How about squares w/black sashing in the middle of each????? or not.
I would consider a stack and whack from it. You never know what it will be unless you try.
"ugly" fabric
OK, call me weird, but I actually kinda like the fabric. If you want to sell it, PM me :)
LOL, and here I am thinking it's not all that ugly!! I think combining with Halloween and/or fall colors is the way to go also.
You could get really fiddly and do a postage stamp with some brighter additions, string quilt or as others suggested applique pieces or yoyos. I must admit...I don't think it is really that ugly:)
How much would you want for it? I think I have an idea for it if you're willing to sell, trade or whatever if you're willing. Just give me a pm. Thanks so much!
If you think it is that ugly, have a raffle with the names of those who like it. Beauty is in the eye of beholder
That is what I was thinking, OBW. It may only make one small block, but it would be something! You wouldnt be able tell how ugly it was before.

Don't know if it would work but what about a One Block Wonder?
Those aren't flowers, they are tree fungus. Actually, I kind of like that piece.
I would make a pinwheel quilt out of this. Might think it is ugly now.But it will be a very pretty quilt.
I agree with you Jackie, I see appliqued flowers.
O.K. so i'm weird
I like it. It looks fun. I would use it in just about anything I make and like it when i'm done. Maybe mix it in a twister?

How much do you have to use? If you have to use a big majority of it then I would use as small a cut as you possibly can without making them tooo small. My mom has said that if you think that your fabric is stilll too ugly then your square is not small enough. My suggestion is to just to make it into a small wall hanging and what is left of it you can put as a small piping or use as the backing, that way you will be the only one that would have to see it if you decided that you just needed to view it again. :D
I would use it to make a chenille pillow top. Go to the link provided to see how to make chenille.

I do not think that the fabric is as ugly as you think. Remember the smaller that you cut the pieces-the less ugly they become.
Why not cut it into 2 1/2 inch squares and sew it back to gether, random. Put the square in a bag, and how you pull them out is how you sew them together. Might make a neet piece. Good luck.

A potholder.

"If its still ugly, you haven't cut it small enough." Bonnie Hunter said something along these lines. lol
I do agree that its ugly! |
There are so many things you could do with this piece of fabric. I happen to like your fabric. It will be nice to see what you decide to do with it. :)
I think that it has great color options. I'd put lots and lots of different yellows, golds, greens and oranges into a really scrappy quilt. I personally love to make half square triangles, and then make them into stars. This is only a fat quarter. With plenty of other fabrics, you can bury it, or enhance it all the way to a masterpiece.
Do you have any information about this fabric? It might work for a backing of a baby quilt I have started.
As Bonnie Hunter says "If it is still ugly you haven't cut it small enough".
Ok, I know I'm in the minority here, but I like this fabric and used it in a BIG TEN quilt that I made using the Swirly Girls Design pattern. Here's a link to my blog post that showed the coordinating fabrics I used and the initial stages of the quilt construction. For some reason I don't have a picture of the finished quilt, but in it, I used the fabric in question as an ooutside border with orange cornerstones (third fabric from the top in the picture of the fabrics). I also bound it in the orange fabric. Currently the quilt is hanging in an area quilt shop as a class sample and I guess the fabric didn't turn off enough people because I have 8 already signed up for the class. :-) Good luck with whatever you do, and be sure to share pictures.
Here's the link to my quilt: http://joanne-everyonedeservesaquilt...monday_26.html |
Joanne, that is fantastic. You took the ugly duckling and made it a beautiful swan!!
Joanne 9 of 12....your swirling quilt is perfect for that fabric. I, too do not find it ugly, I think Halloween and it's only 18x22. Please show us when you decide.

I don't think it would be ugly as a little pocketbook, a makeup bag, a purse lining etc. (I don't think it is ugly) But since you do just use it as a purse lineing or what about the back of a table topper ?
Well, I like it. Guess it takes all kinds, huh? If fussy cut it would make pretty yo-yos.
I don't know why you think it's ugly! I kind of like it. Would not necessarily be my favorite, but definitely one I could use. Pick out some mini-prints or blenders with the same colors and have fun.
I think it would blend in with a mushroom fabric or something woodsy. Or, use it in a piano key border with those shades in another quilt. I think it could be striking with the right color combinations. An ugly fq is like a weed --- a misplaced flower. Thanks for sharing.

Just about any ugly fabric can be used for one of the middle layers in a chenille quilt.....
