Ugly quilt in process

1 Attachment(s)
not enjoying this quilt at all...this is one of the bag of scraps I bought. 2 inch strips. All were black and dark blue strips and many the same. I added a few tans form my stash and gray fabric. Not loving the gray, the dark colors and on top of that...I ran out of the scraps fabric for an entire row...so that row is out...and then one block so I pieced together the sashing on one block with scraps. I was going to use gray for the border....my husband said YUK...so I will use white. This is becoming an ugly.

I think a splash of red would perk it up. I suggest adding sashing strips between the blocks. What do you think?

I thought exactly the same thing! :)

I like that idea and the truth is it can't hurt it. But I believe ugly quilts are important they are great to drag outside for picnics or naps on the beach or on a hammock. Use them to pad a loved table before setting something heavy or rough on it I have a few uglies that I love and would never part with.

carolina quilter 03-03-2014 04:27 PM

Great masculine quilt - don't stop now!

lynnie 03-03-2014 04:29 PM

red sounds great. looks like an 'expresso' quilt

carolaug 03-03-2014 04:38 PM

hmmm...never thought of red. I will have to check my stash, not sure if I have any reds. I am liking that idea though.

Doggramma 03-03-2014 05:19 PM

You're funny, love your title! The quilt, so far, is not ugly. It just needs something to perk it up. Maybe a tiny flange of red and then white sashings and borders?

hopetoquilt 03-03-2014 05:29 PM

Use extra blocks for the backing...

I thought sashing between blocks would be good, too. The blocks that show the rug between them seem livelier than the ones that are right together. Maybe a very narrow red border--like a piping, would be good????

sewNso 03-03-2014 06:14 PM

I like adding another sashing between the blocks to 'perk it up, also'. I think it is going to be just fine. you will be surprised how it will grow on you, once it is done. I think a pretty red strip with black corner stones, if it were mine.

playswithcolor 03-03-2014 06:16 PM

If you don't have red, audition other colors. The tan/beige similar to what's in the blocks might work. Another idea might be the sashing setting that forms 8 pointed stars around each cornerstone. I'm sure that setting has a name but it's escaping me right now.

Dragonfly Nana 03-03-2014 06:22 PM

You could also set the blocks on point with a light colored sashing and edge pieces (can't remember the correct term at the moment). That might help you use the other blocks too.

OK red got many votes, but I think outside the box and that is a dark turquiose

Homespun 03-04-2014 04:48 AM

I don't think it is ugly, just bland..like suggestions to perk it up.

GailG 03-04-2014 04:51 AM

I love your blocks and I think that the suggestions for adding red would be great. I also thought perhaps an orangy color would be a good complement to the brown sashing. Let us see the final product.

Jingle 03-04-2014 05:16 AM

Not ugly just needs to be perked up. I have never seen an ugly quilt.

Twisted Quilter 03-04-2014 07:08 AM

Not ugly in my opinion.

Bonbonary 03-04-2014 07:14 AM

What about black sashing? Something similar to the dark squares in the blocks. I think it would be a great quilt for a guy...looks very masculine. Not ugly to me.

HillCountryGal 03-04-2014 07:16 AM

Sometimes the ones we think are ugly turn out to be our favorite!
For sure audition several different colors for sashing and try setting them on point just to see how you like that look. Be sure to let us know what you decide.

toverly 03-04-2014 08:10 AM

You could set on point with bright squares in between. Just a thought.

PABerard 03-04-2014 08:27 AM

I agree a splash of red or teal or any bright print/color would give this quilt a new adjective. You shouldn't finish it until you've tried out a couple of corner stones or sashings. Don't give up, it is a great beginning and someone is going to LOVE it.

Me too!!!!!!

I don't think this is ugly at all, and I am not a big fan of brown. Some light sashing or cornerstones in red perhaps and you're good to go.

Country1 03-04-2014 09:54 AM

I don't think it is ugly at all!

M.I.Late 03-04-2014 10:50 AM

I personally don't see the red... but you could certainly audition different colors by just laying these blocks on top of any big enough piece of fabric until you find the perfect color. I am almost leaning to pinks (because of the brown) rather than red.

QUILTNMO 03-04-2014 11:21 AM

i agree i think a small sashing of red would help!!!

joobee 03-04-2014 11:50 AM

Not ugly at all, just needs a splash of color to perk it up!

Stitch124 03-04-2014 12:06 PM

I like the red sashing idea - what about a rogue red/white/tan block in place of one of the blocks and off-center it. that is if you don't mind an asymetrical quilt.

Stitch124 03-04-2014 12:08 PM

and put the extra tan block on the back.

Retired Fire Chief 03-05-2014 03:45 AM

I don't think it is ugly, it just appears to be very masculine to me.

That was also my first though too!! Great minds think alike!!

SheriR 03-05-2014 04:40 AM

I like your husbands idea of white. My vote is white...with red cornerstones. :D

helou 03-05-2014 04:47 AM

not ugly, just still in progress. You haven't seen the ugly quilt I am working on because you would think that yours is going to be beautiful
I was thinking the same thing as what platyswithcolor said
star sashing would be my way to go

youngduncan 03-05-2014 05:01 AM

Have you considered using an unbleached muslin for your sashing with dark blood red corner blocks? White might be a little too stark, but the unbleached muslin would still be lighter than your blocks are now. I do NOT believe that your quilt is "ugly." Your blocks are so precisely pieced and your colors go together so well that they are all truly wonderful. Nothing that is so well done as these are could ever be considered "ugly."

twinkie 03-05-2014 05:07 AM

I agree that you should add a colored sashing between the blocks. Either a white or bright yellow.

lizzy 03-05-2014 05:11 AM

I read somewhere that using a large print fabric is good for small borders or binding etc. Maybe that would add interest for the eye to travel. I don't think this is ugly at all but unless my colors are wrong I think a hint of gold would help in the sashing, maybe in the way sashing comes together at the corners and makes a star. Just my opinion.

That's what I was thinking - and the turquoise suggestion got my attention too! Slap some rouge on that piggy!

WMUTeach 03-05-2014 05:18 AM

Someone will love it just because it was made by you and it will keep them warm and cozy.
