Many times over the past year I've mentioned the group I'm in, making "ugly quilts" for the homeless. I finally got a few pic's. We have made over the last 15 years, 15,000 ugly quilts, and donate to the Salvation Army, who distributes them. We've also given to the police, fire department, various churches and city employees to pass out when they see a need. It's a very rewarding experience, and we even have a few DH, including mine. He will pick up the donations we get from various groups, helps assemble the quilts and then delivers them to the Sal. Army. Outside of quilts are any type dark material, bed spreads. Inside batting are donated blankets or bed pads, and inside of quilt have a sheet. Here are a few pic's:

Our funny tie board, we use 4 for each quilt

Our "stash", sheets on bottom shelves, & "batting" blankets on top

Quilters tieing the quilts, to stay together

Closet to store ditty bag toiletries for each ugly quilt

Finished bags, ready for delivery, we even do kids - note stuff animals

Your group should be very proud of it's accomplishments and I bet that the quilt recipients do not think they are at all ugly.

Great! I'm sure that the people are very grateful and I doubt that they are all that ugly. The pictures I saw weren't.

Do you request certain items from various organizations? Do you get a lot of clothes, or do you request just things like blankets, sheets, etc.?

What a great ministry! Two years ago we started making dresses for our mission team to take to Brazil. Now we're doing much more, including making quilts for the Christian Appalachian Project, which gives quilts, made from our scraps, to children in Appalachia. It is soooo rewarding. This gives me a new idea!

roadrunr 03-10-2011 05:33 AM
