I fell heir to a couple "bins full" of (discontinued) Upholstery Samples from a furniture store and thought I would share one of the projects I have been using them for. These purses have "four pockets" inside, in the bag lining ..... and "two pockets" on the outside (at each side/end) of the bag. Just like any of us who sew ..... "Where there is will, there is a way" in putting together and making use of all kinds of scraps, leftovers, etc.

I was on a "roll" and set-up an assembly line and made seven of these bags.

Very nice to get so many of them finished for christmas! I like the way that you left the gromets to use as a hole for the handles on the tan and rust one. Very clever!

leatheflea 12-11-2010 09:32 AM

Upholstery fabric is great for bags you need little or no stabilizer and batting. Nice work!

quiltstodo 12-11-2010 09:33 AM

Very nice. Love the color and texture combo's

NancyG 12-11-2010 09:33 AM

Your purses are just adorable. Great job and good use of those fabric samples. Way to go!

dglvr 12-11-2010 09:45 AM

Those are not gromets ...... they are "buttons". I use "four" large buttons where the handles are attached ...... and a total of "six" smaller matching buttons ("three" sewn on the center seam line - outside of bag) on "each side".

cherylynne 12-11-2010 10:19 AM

Great way to repurpose the samples. Good work.

mama's place 12-11-2010 10:22 AM

Hey, you could sell those. I'd like one, if you have any extra. Not into the girly bags that so many make, but I could see using one of those.

grendelskin 12-11-2010 10:28 AM

They're fabulous, love the buttons.

frugalfabrics 12-11-2010 10:32 AM

Oh they are beautiful - much more sturdy than an average cotton purse.

amma 12-11-2010 11:54 AM

Very attractive bags :D:D:D

lalaland 12-11-2010 12:06 PM

Those are really nice. I bought a bag made out of that material years ago, still use it, they last forever!

rootyr 12-11-2010 12:06 PM

Born2Sew 12-11-2010 12:31 PM

Fantastic bags! They will make some lucky someone very happy. What a neat way to use up those fabrics pieces too.

GrammaBabs 12-11-2010 01:10 PM

very nice... i too use upholstry sample for bags.. it's much more fun than "yardage"..great job..

laureneberhard 12-11-2010 01:31 PM

Did you use a commercial pattern or make one up by yourself? Good job on all, but my favorite is the tan and turquoise. Need my address?

Harmony 12-11-2010 01:34 PM

These are brilliant! Great use of "found" materials"!

katied772 12-11-2010 01:47 PM

I have lots of these samples from my day job in a furniture store. Been collecting them for a couple years, much to my husband's dismay. He works in the same store and it was really difficult to get them out without his noticing but I managed. I have some leather samples too. Bet they would work well for this. Did you use any lining or batting?

Stitchnripper 12-11-2010 01:52 PM

What great purses!

CarrieAnne 12-11-2010 02:33 PM

Lockeb 12-11-2010 02:42 PM

If the Upholstery sample was "heavy enough" = Not necessary for batting or stiffning ..... if lighter weight, yes I did use it. All the bags are lined and I use a light-weight batting to give the "inside pockets" more structure (there are "four inside pockets"). I also use "Plastic Canvas" (I think that's what they call it) cut to the size of the bottom of the bag, which add more stability, and it will stand-up better.

great job. I like the combination of colors and textures. I get a lot of upholstery remnants and made purses and tote bags as Christmas gifts this year.

Kitsapquilter 12-11-2010 04:12 PM

Love those bags. Now I will want to be on the look out for some of those samples!!

earthwalker 12-11-2010 04:15 PM

These are really beautiful. You have put the colours and textures together really well. Like someone else mentioned, I don't like bright or patterned bags, but yours, I would go for. Love the subtle colours...you really should consider selling these, either privately or to a shop. Style and planet friendly...what more could you want!

Moon Holiday 12-11-2010 04:18 PM

You did a very nice job and aren't you the lucky one!
Upholstery samples are great for use making bags. I am always on the lookout for them!

tutt 12-11-2010 04:20 PM

Lady-T 12-11-2010 04:38 PM

You did fantastic! Will you be posting in the Classifieds? :)

QuiltQtrs 12-11-2010 04:46 PM

Why not offer them on the Classifieds .... they are all unique and so well- made.

Thank you for the closeups. Very inspiring. Think I'll dig my samples out and prove to my husband that there was a good reason to collect them.

Your bags are very good looking also ..... I am the kind of person who "LOVES' to create, mixing colors and textures .... and love how the finished project comes out. It is boring for me to sit down and make 25-50 of the same thing .... like it better to make each one different.

Hammockhanger 12-11-2010 05:05 PM

Nice

Yes .... have a couple left. If I don't run out of time .... thought I might put a few together to sell at the Quilt Show in April.

beachlady 12-11-2010 05:08 PM
