Victorian/Heirloom Stockings

2 Attachment(s)
I am thrilled to share these - before purchasing my long arm I was dabbling in this style of heirloom quilting on my domestic machine and was having a great time. It has taken me almost a year to get to this point on my long arm...where I can do detail work! I have an older machine so it's a little more finicky to move...and I also have no stitch regulation so the learning curve was a bit longer...but I'm thrilled to be able to create this kind of quilting...finally!!

These are Victorian/heirloom inspired stockings. I'm a huge fan of Cindy Needham and her linen quilts and I am making three stockings for each of my daughters in that style. I want to add beads and vintage lace to these when done, but I'm still playing and making it up as I go! Fun!! :)

The first photo is a close up of the front of the first stocking, and the second is the reverse side. I think I'm going to do these trapunto effect feathered backings for all three, but the front will have different patterns.

These are just stunning!!! If you could share some info I'd be grateful... Did you actually add additional batting to the tapunto areas, or is that just the effect of dense quilting around the feathers? What batting did you use???

Grandma Bonnie 11-20-2013 05:53 AM

Wow! Will be beautiful stockings! Good for you for hanging in there and getting so you could do them!! Love them!

Thank you!! I used Glide thread in the top and bobbin. Not that it's necessary. I'm really not too particular as far as thread goes, I just happen to like Glide because it's inexpensive, comes off the cone and runs in my long arm well, and it's somewhere between a fine and thick thread.

Thank you!!! I certainly will! My goal for today is to finish the remaining two stockings. :)

Certainly! I love to share!! ;) I did not actually go through and add the trapunto. I adore trapunto...but I'm a lazy quilter. I could have done machine trapunto to save time...but I'm even too lazy for that. What I did was layer two lower loft inexpensive polyester battings. To create the trapunto look I quilted very densely and close to the feathers. This is my preferred method because I do like detail work...and I adore the old fashioned look.

You COULD do this by quilting the feathers first with a water soluble thread and then trimming away the batt...but that's a lot of work and honestly if I'm going to go to all the trouble I'd rather do it at the machine than quilting, trimming, quilting again. Bleh. Like I said I'm lazy. LOL :)

The batting is Quilter's Dream Poly Request...their least expensive lowest loft batting. But I used two layers.
