Vintage Tin - The Route 66 Quilt

7 Attachment(s)
One of my clients brought this through the door recently, and I jumped for joy at the prospect of being able to quilt it! There is lots of hand embroidery on it, and lots of white space to play with a little free motion quilting. The embroidery was done by her mother, and this quilt is now hanging in the entry way at her Mom's home!

One of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen......

QuiltnNan 03-27-2016 03:25 AM

what wonderful hand embroidery

just_the_scraps_m'am 03-27-2016 04:01 AM

wow, lots of intricate hand work in that -- & your quilting fits in perfectly --
Route 66 must have a special meaning for the maker -- such a scenic place [in northern PA anyway]

Delightful quilt.

luvstoquilt 03-27-2016 04:53 AM

That is great..delightful quilt, beautiful handwork and quilting!!

Wow! You both did an amazing job. I don't believe I've ever seen depth achieved by machine quilting but the way you chose to quilt the car in front of the garage really does make it more dimensional. And you can quote me on that!
PS Can you please find out what kind of embroidery floss - the brand - that she used?

Tartan 03-27-2016 05:22 AM

Great quilt and quilting!

Monale 03-27-2016 05:54 AM

Wow, that's all embroidery, not a panel, right? It's amazing! And your quilting enhances it so much! What a master piece!

I believe she just used a standard DMC in black.

Yes, it's embroidery --- every bit of it! I was stunned when I saw it!

How beautiful! I so enjoy seeing both hand quilting and machine quilting in the same piece. Old techniques with the new works so well together. What a lovely art piece.

YukonViv 03-27-2016 09:43 AM

Stunning! You can tell you had so much fun quilting this, it shows! As someone who loves to embroider blocks for quilts I am so pleased to see how you quilted it, I have a top done and had taken it to a local long armer who felt she couldn't do it justice, but now I have some ideas and could possible work on mine in a similar way. You have inspired me!!

Both of you really should take pride in this piece, it's beautiful.

ManiacQuilter2 03-27-2016 09:47 AM

You did an excellent job with quilting this difficult quilt!

My sister bought the entire kit to make this, but I fear that she will never be able to finish as she has come down with Parkinson's. Pity too, because her husband is a mechanic. I thank you for showing some nice closeups of this one.

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister! Perhaps you could find someone to help with the project. There are lots of different blocks, and if a group broke them up and everyone just embroidered one block you could piece it relatively quickly. I know she would love it --- and her hubby would too!

Gorgeous quilt and quilting! Your incorporation of the Route 66 sign is fantastic and a real compliment to the quilt.

What a beautiful quilt. Lots of hard work.

suern3 03-27-2016 02:30 PM

I made this quilt, also. Took my time with the hand embroidery, probably over a period of two years. Still working on the quilting, free motion on my domestic machine. I just work on it in between other projects. I love how this one turned out! The stitching and your quilting is just perfect! Sure wish I had seen yours before I started mine. I did do the micro stippling in the background of some of my blocks, though, and really like. Had a little trouble with ideas for some of the more open areas and love how you did this. Btw. I used Cosmos embroidery floss, as recommended by Crabapple Hill, the designers of the pattern. Thanks for sharing this.

QUILTNMO 03-27-2016 03:07 PM

beautiful job!!

Quiltaddict 03-27-2016 03:47 PM

I have a friend who did that pattern for her husband, yours is very nice.

quiltingcandy 03-27-2016 04:05 PM

OMG that is fantastic! I had to go look at the kit and was about ready to buy it when reality kicked in. I will never get it done. Driving Route 66 is a kick!

SewCraftyGirl 03-27-2016 04:35 PM

Love the quilt and your quilting!

Merrylin 03-27-2016 05:47 PM

woodyandjake 03-27-2016 06:44 PM

So beautiful

quiltingshorttimer 03-27-2016 06:59 PM

Great job by all! I have the same quilt--done with multi colored thead (the pattern book shows both color pathways) and just need to put it together and then quilt. What weight thread did you use with all that embroidery? what thread did you use? You did a great job cause I know that there is a lot of embroidery and it's close together!
