It's a good lesson. I've gotten ink out of fabric before with hair spray so was very confident. You just never know. It was the type of ink I used apparently. Will keep you posted on what works; what didn't.

It was a good lesson for me and a good reminder to you guys! It's ok. I am confident it'll be removed. We are lucky in this country to have so many dependable products that work!

:D ;-)

Buy a can of "Spray and Wash," now renamed "Resolve," and a box of Biz powder. (Get the aerosol, not the pump refill.) Spray the fabric, let it set for 10 minutes or so, then soak it in Biz dissolved in enough warm water to cover it. The soaking might take a day or two. Slosh (move) the quilt around in the Biz water a few times a day. When I taught school, I got ballpoint ink on my clothes daily, and it always came out using those products.

since you are quilting with a dark thread it kind of blends in ok...but so sorry this happened.

You give excellent advice!! Better safe than sorry!! Test a corner first! Why didn't I think of that? lol. Sometimes we are so sure of things and then this happens.

Thank you, Bobby's Girl, for this nice tip!! Spray and Wash is nice but I found Oxyclean to beat that a mile. Oxyclean will remove old set-in stains! We can't get Biz powder in our location. Perhaps Naphtha Soap will work. It's always been advertised to get out the toughest stains! Will let you know if this works when I try. Thank you so much for this help!!

so sorry this happened to your quilt...

I can't stand what they have on the market! None of it is for fine lines like I love. Do they make water soluble pens? If so, they probably are not fine line enough for me. I've always gotten the ink out before with hair spray.

There are fine line water soluable and air soluable pens. They are purple (air soluable) and blue (water soluable)--just like the regular ones just fine point. They are no wider than a regular pen.

I have a blue one but never use it, white and silver markers. I will now. Thank you so much, virtualbernie!!

They are right about the different kinds of inks and resins! I bookmarked this site! Thank you so much. They suggested also "acetone" and that will work for sure!!! I should have thought of the nail polish remover but didn't. thank you, sewnbyme4u!!!

Oh, that was a great move putting the dots on!! Lots of people will try that out!! Thank you so much, Lady Shivesa!! I'm sure some of these ideas presented will work great!!

It's the first time hair spray has ever failed me for ink marks, but all we need is a FIRST time and we learn then!! Maybe I'll pounce with powder or develop my own marker! Yes, I was sick about that but ever hopeful still!!

Yes, this is the first time the hair spray failed me. Your welcome and I hope others will avoid doing this. We just don't know that some inks are so persistent. Thank you so much, GrammaNan, for the beautiful compliment!! We work so hard on our projects to get them right! Am sure something will work good!!

Try hydrogen perxiode. I moved into our home a few years ago our carpet was off white. My youngest child Peter broke an ink pen on the carpet and left it there to bleed all over. I had a huge spot on the carpet of black ink. I searched the internet and found that I could use hydrogen perxiode on the carpet. It didn't fade it at all but I have a hunch its because its a syncthetic fiber. It might work on your fabric too. Worth a try.

bjnicholson 09-07-2010 06:14 PM

Just as colors can run, so can fabrics "grab" colors to them. It's almost as if you used a dye. Maybe that's what is happening here. Hopefully, the alcohol or the new Tide will help. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

sandpat 09-07-2010 06:17 PM

Oh no...I can't offer any suggestions other that what has already been mentioned, but I do wish you good luck. That quilt is way to pretty to have something bad happen to it. You'll have a great story to to with the quilt when you get the ink out though. :D:

Wow! So glad it worked for you on that beautiful white carpet! Peroxide is always a good standby! It should work well on this ink! There are lots of great products to try!! Thank you so much, kristen0122, for sharing that tip for us!!

Go over it with a metallic thread. It'll look like it's supposed to be there.

Thank you sooo much, bjnicholson! You are right! I couldn't wait to try the Hydrogen Peroxide kristen used to get the ink out of her white carpet. So dabbed it with Qtips and waiting for results @the moment. Bleach it, baby, bleach it.

Me too! Am waiting to see the Peroxide remove it. If that doesn't work, I know the rubbing alcohol will. We love those chubby little minis! They look better without the ink on!! Thank you, mollymct!!! ;) ;) :D :D

try oxy clean. dissolve it in hot water and soak quilt and rub a bit too. good luck. i got pencil out that way.

spinnergs 09-07-2010 07:04 PM

If nothing else works, you could use a dark quilting thread over the top of the marks so it would look like you meant it to be dark quilting :|

That's a fantastic idea! I'll employ that if I can't get the stains removed. So far, the peroxide has lifted some of the purple color ink out. I'm afraid to use more though for discoloring the fabric. I'll wait til it dries well. Thanks, spinnergs, for that good idea!!

When I worked as a nurse's aide we used to soak our uniforms in milk if we got an ink stain. It will take out blood too. We also used Peri-care if you know a nurse you could ask if you can get some. It works wonders on ink but it is an institution product not on the open market that I know of.

dvseals 09-07-2010 07:51 PM

I had this pen with black ink and every time I used it I'd end up with ink on everything.
I'd wash my hands and scrub with all sorts of soaps etc didn't help one bit.
Then one day dummy me grabbed that pen again and yup you guessed it ink everywhere.
I had gotten a bottle of Awesome
and said "self.. it's the only thing you've not tried."

So I spritz my hands with Awesome ran warm water over them and ink was gone. Didn't even have to rub hands together.

champagnebubbles 09-07-2010 08:24 PM

Your Quilt is Beautiful, good luck with the ink, could call it a design choice, freedom of expressions, a new trend in quilting... :)

Jan in VA 09-07-2010 09:20 PM

1quilt_gma,
Thanks for the tip to bookmark the topic, I didn't know yet to do that!

I'm soooo sorry this happened to your quilt and all your effort, what a downer

But, as an encouragement, let me tell you about an antique quilt from the Civil War era that I saw in a MUSEUM once. It had the pencil marks still showing on the face of it 130 years after it was made, but that beautiful quilt was proudly hung where all could see and admire it.
Love yours anyway!
