I was brave. I told myself these ink marks will come out with hair spray. Yes, I really badly wanted to mark my quilt with an ink pen for precise quilting! It soaked for 2 days in ammonia, scrubbed with tooth brushes endlessly and sprayed with the cheapest grade of hair spray (that works the best) and still there are INK PEN MARKS ON MY QUILT!!! yikes. I've scrubbed with everything and think I have actually set the ink in for good. :? I'll wash it 100 times and it'll be gone! ;)

here's the whole quilt

did stippling here (no marking this one first)

did pebble quilting by hand -- needs lots more work -- much harder by hand

oh man! why an ink pen? back in the day, didn't they use pencils? i use chalk or a disappearing pen.
washable crayloa markers have been used with great success.
so sorry this happened to your quilt...

stitchesnstaples 09-07-2010 02:22 PM

How sad, your quilt is to cute. I have no ideas of how to get it out.:-(

hobo2000 09-07-2010 02:23 PM

If it wasn't marked "permanent" there is a product in the drug store that takes ink out of mens fine linen shirts. It works really well. Its in the area where you find "Goop" and those products.

watterstide 09-07-2010 02:23 PM

see if any of these will help.

Pat M. 09-07-2010 02:25 PM

Have you tried GooGone? Can't hurt, try just a little on the ink.

sewgull 09-07-2010 02:25 PM

Rub rubbing alcohol. So sorry about the boo-boo.

finch 09-07-2010 02:30 PM

I used the chalk on a purse pattern and it would not come out,no matter what I did. That was a lesson learned for me,so I know how you must feel. So sorry about your quilt. It is still very pretty.

Ditter43 09-07-2010 02:40 PM

If it won't come out, quilt over it with black or dark blue thread.....Bummer!! :|

GrammaNan 09-07-2010 02:41 PM

Hairspray should have worked. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. You may have helped others from doing the same thing. I think the quilt is beautiful and will be wonderful conversation piece.

I can't stand what they have on the market! None of it is for fine lines like I love. Do they make water soluble pens? If so, they probably are not fine line enough for me. I've always gotten the ink out before with hair spray.

Sadiemae 09-07-2010 02:42 PM

I am soooo sorry!

ok, I'll try that. Thanks!

renda 09-07-2010 02:44 PM

Try something called De-Sol-it. I purchase it at Wal-Mart and it took red ink out of my black & white quilt. It has also taken motor oil out of my husbands shirt that had been washed and dried several times.

oh, thank you, sewgulll! I'll try that. I'll try mayo, lemonade, murphy's oil soap, etc.

:D

SueDor 09-07-2010 02:47 PM

Hope you can get it out with all the suggestions. Let us know which one works.

Jingle 09-07-2010 02:48 PM

Ink pens work best for me on wrong side of dark pieces. I used some on the quilt I am quilting and finishing up now. Some of the ink got on some of the white, I intend on using hair spray and shout.
Dittter has a good idea, use dark thread to quilt over it.

No, but GooGone is good stuff! It's oil based and removes labels great but don't know about on fabs. will try anyway. Thanks!

Oh, I like that idea w/the dark thread over it. that'll work too!! Thanks so much, Jingleberry. I was heartsick.

Good reminder - thank you for showing us - I am sorry that you are having trouble removing the ink -

ckcowl 09-07-2010 03:19 PM

no matter what you use always test a small corner to make sure, sometimes what came out just fine on this project would not come out of that one...always test before using anything; i had one of those blue disappear with water pens that disappeared just fine from the quilt top but stained the back...
since you are quilting with a dark thread it kind of blends in ok...but so sorry this happened.

There are fine line water soluable and air soluable pens. They are purple (air soluable) and blue (water soluable)--just like the regular ones just fine point. They are no wider than a regular pen.

cindle 09-07-2010 03:26 PM

just a thought but won't mayo and oil soap leave grease marks on your fabric?

bearisgray 09-07-2010 03:46 PM

Maybe practice on scraps?

skyle1968 09-07-2010 03:56 PM

I used ink pen on one of my quilts one time and I used dawn dish soap and a lil scrub brush and let it soak for a lil while and then washed it in the washer and it all came out :o)

2 Doods 09-07-2010 04:02 PM

Oh dear! So sorry!
My DH had an ink pen leak in his pocket one time and my grandma told me to soak it in milk. It took it out and saved the shirt. Might be worth a try.

Hope you find something that works for you!!!

dsb38327 09-07-2010 04:11 PM

Soooorry. I'm with Ditter, quilt over it if it won't come out. That quilt is too nice to give up. Good luck.

Theresa 09-07-2010 04:17 PM

Bummers. Gosh, what a lesson for all of us. Keep us posted on what finally worked.

bittersweet 09-07-2010 04:23 PM

Tide has a product that took sharpie marks out of my sisters table runner it is not the mark out pen but a new product for stains It might work

Blue Bell 09-07-2010 04:39 PM

What a shame. Hope you find something to get it all out.

sewnbyme4u 09-07-2010 04:51 PM

Don't throw in the towel just yet...try some of the suggestions on the following site.....keep us posted. You are not the first quilter to do this and unfortunately you won't be the last....

DoxieMom 09-07-2010 04:52 PM

So sorry about the ink. If you can't get it out, I think Ditter has a great idea to quilt over it in dark thread and make it look intentional!!

Lady Shivesa 09-07-2010 04:54 PM

Yikes! I use pens to trace on the back of fabric (like if I'm using a template), and today I used one to make tiny little dots to mark so my quilted triangles would be even - but I made just a dot where each point should be and kept them on the other quilted threads so it wouldn't show up.

So sorry about the ink not coming out - it's such a lovely quilt. Hopefully some of the suggestions offered here will work!

sewnbyme4u 09-07-2010 04:55 PM

You can make templates for quilting out of freezer paper.....draw the shape, cut and iron (shiny side down) sew just off the paper, peel and iron again.....NO PENCIL MARKS REQIURED.....look this technique up online for further info.....we learn from all our boo boo's....

Harmony 09-07-2010 04:59 PM

I can just imagine how sick you were when you discovered what had happened! Sure hope one of the suggestions here works for you! What a bummer!

sumcoop 09-07-2010 05:02 PM

Maybe if you try the sheet that take out fading of colors.
Alcohol has always helped me.
I am sorry too!...

Ok, it's safe for fabs! Thank you for letting me know that! I'll have lots of things to try for sure!
