What do you do when you don't like it?

For the last month or so I’ve been in a slump. My DD’s birthday is coming up and I had already made her a quilt for Christmas, so I thought I’d make a bag for her. Now the question…What do you do when you spend time making a gift for someone and you REALLY don’t like it when you are finished? It’s not that it’s hideous looking, but I just don’t see DD using it. I will probably make something else but then what do I do with this one? She could use it for a knitting bag? Use it as a lunch bag when you want to feed the entire office (she could even carry eating utensils in the sunglasses case)? Use it to carry the cat to the vet in?

I'll bet if you took it to Church and set it on a table with a note, [take me] it would be gone in a heartbeat. I like it. It is very pretty.

wolph33 04-27-2012 06:20 AM

it looks great.she will love it.sometimes we are our own worst critics

mighty 04-27-2012 06:33 AM

I like it!!!!

landers1 04-27-2012 06:39 AM

I think it is beautiful

Rock Lady 04-27-2012 06:58 AM

I think it is quite unique and very pretty.

AZ Jane 04-27-2012 07:01 AM

I know what you mean. It's hard to give a gift you don't love.

ScrapQuilter 04-27-2012 07:04 AM

I think it looks great......... I know where you can give it a good home......

RedGarnet222 04-27-2012 07:04 AM

Sometimes I have felt this way after hours of work on a project. But, set it aside for a while. I guarentee the next time you see it you will think WOW this is great, what was I thinking? Because it is great. That purse is one of the most beautiful purses I have ever seen shown on the board.

But, if you don't want to keep it I know the charity auction would bring big money for the diabetic kids. PM me if you are interested.

Sally J 04-27-2012 07:08 AM

I love it, really different. You might be surprised, she may love it like I do.

delma_paulk 04-27-2012 07:19 AM

Send it to me??? Will gladly give you add.

delma

Tartan 04-27-2012 07:28 AM

If you really think she won't use it then keep it for yourself. I think it's a great bag but what I think my kids would like and what they really like, sometimes misses the mark. If it's something I've bought I say, oh well and just regift it or donate it to charity. For your beautiful bag, I'd say Happy Birthday to meeee!

jcrow 04-27-2012 07:30 AM

Maybe if you add a speck of color to it to jazz it up you will like it.

SUZAG 04-27-2012 07:32 AM

I really like that bag! What pattern is that? I'd like to make one for myself! Love big bags!

This is what I call a DM (Diana's Mind) pattern. I made it up as I went along.

cheezythequiltmaker 04-27-2012 07:50 AM

If you think your DD is not the right home just let it sit out on the counter when you have friends round and let someone else fall in love with it. I have lots of quilts that i have made that haven't had homes to go to. Sometimes it takes years for them to find the right place to be.

Give it to her as part of your gift -- your taste is almost 100% guaranteed to be different from your daughters. I think its gorgeous, but its not my style. When your daughter opens it, tell her that if it isn't her taste to give it to someone else who might like it, so she doesn't feel obligated to keep it. But I'd bet money she'll love it as its elegant, and totally different from anyone else's bag...you did an absolutely fantastic job on it!

pls1946 04-27-2012 08:24 AM

It is a very unique and I think it's beautiful....I like the idea of giving it to her and saying she can give to someone else or you will replace it with a bag with her picking the pattern and fabric.

pioneerlady 04-27-2012 08:27 AM

I really like it.

Crqltr 04-27-2012 08:29 AM

I love it..if it is oversized it would make a great over nite bag..

feline fanatic 04-27-2012 08:33 AM

Wow! You are AMAZING!! You just made that up as you went along?!?!? Impressive. I really like this bag, it is different. Why do you think you DD wouldn't use it?

PS just hopped over to your blog you have some really neat stuff there too.

BeverlyH 04-27-2012 08:36 AM

Don't do this to yourself or your work! Give it a chance. Sure looks good from here!

sewmorethings 04-27-2012 08:38 AM

Don't be so hard on yourself, it is very pretty

This is how I gift most of my stuff. It's hard to make something for a specific person. I just make what I like and when it's admired, I know that it has found a good home.
I would show it to your daughter first and let her have first dibs...

XYZ123 04-27-2012 10:42 AM

What's not to like??? It is adorable.

northern lass 04-27-2012 10:47 AM

I think it's a beautiful bag. The style is so unusual and it is roomy. The great British weather dictates a bag big enough for a brolly and I like to pack my kindle in too!

I agree. Sometimes our kids can really surprise us... LOL! I really like this. But I also understand what you're saying. I have a 75% finished (needs borders) queen-sized quilt top that I made for my DH & have decided is too hideous to give to him. Actually, he'd probably like it but I hate it so much I don't even want to finish it. Bummer!

Sandee 04-27-2012 11:07 AM

What a unique pattern!! It's beautiful!

You are right about my daughter having different taste than I. She loves quirky and I love classic...guess I was trying to get somewhere in-between. I love your idea about giving her permission to give it to someone else! That is an outstanding idea! Thanks!

JJean 04-27-2012 04:24 PM

I loved everything my mother made for me--I bet she loves it!

JJean 04-27-2012 04:26 PM

I forgot to add that I like it--and that you did a fabulous job on it.

jillaine 04-27-2012 04:27 PM

Sell it on ebay. It's wonderful! Very smart; very contemporary.

Blinkokr 04-27-2012 04:29 PM

Have a Blessed day

real nice bag. nice job

LynnVT 04-27-2012 04:46 PM

It's beautiful!! I agree with Tartan and others. Each of my four daughters has totally different taste. When three of them were pregnant seven years ago, one said "make whatever kind of quilt you want, Mom, I'll love it." The other two were very particular about the colors and type of design I should make for the babies. I used some of the same fabrics in each, but had a lot of fun anyway. I've offered purses, but guess which one was delighted with what I made her. Recently made a small bag for one of the fussier ones, though she pointed out changes she'd like. The younger generation is VERY opinionated, from what I can see. At least give her the chance to make the decision, because you just don't know how she'll like it.

Material Witness 04-27-2012 05:06 PM

Yes, I would definately get her opinion before ditching it. She may surprise you. You could always let her use it as a gift for a friend of hers as their Christmas present.

ruck9085 04-27-2012 08:27 PM

If I don't like something I made when its done, I usually give it away.

JENNR8R 04-28-2012 05:47 AM

I think you should sell the pattern! It's a fantastic bag!

piepatch 04-29-2012 03:42 AM

I think your bag is very nice and the color/fabric will go with anything. I would be very proud to own it, and I'll bet your daughter will be too. It is a very unique design, and very well made. I would give it to her, and be proud I did! If for whatever reason you don't feel it is enough, put a gift card inside one of those inside pockets............that should do the trick!:o

twinkie 04-29-2012 03:54 AM

I love it. If you think it would help, you could get her initials (embroidered) and applique it on the front. Just an idea.
