I saw the challenge about finishing UFO's. For me this is
a UFO finished. My mom started the blocks years ago. She now has dementia and has trouble putting things together but can still hand quilt. So I am trying to get her UFO's done so she can hand quilt them. We had to finish up a few blocks. She had lost the pattern so I just had to do the best I could to finish them and when it came time to strip them together I found that none of the blocks seemed to be the same size. They needed some border adjustments. It took several days to adjust all the borders and strip them together but finally finished yesterday. Hooray! Will sandwich it all together this week and she will be on her way to hand quilting. I just had to share. house block quilt house block quilt |

What an unique quilt. I love the blocks being used as the side of the house. Wonderful. Thanks for giving us the story behind the quilt. This will be a treasured family quilt.

Oh MY ... I love that!!! what a lovely keepsake.... good job.

Oh, it's lovely. I, too, like the blocks 'built' into the houses. She did a lovely job with those blocks. It's great that she can still handquilt and enjoy that. And it's so kind that you are putting things together for her to quilt. My MinL has dementia too and can't do the handwork she used to enjoy. Makes me so sad.

My Dad has dementia too and I'm racking my brain to figure out some tasks he can do. It would be so satisfying for him to actually accomplish something. Thumbs up to you! |

Luvfabric (and don't we all!)
Reading about how you have worked out a way to keep your mother involved puts me in mind of Ami Simms. Do you know her? Her mother had Alzh. and Ami blogged extensively about her until her death recently. If you go to amisimms.com or AAQI.com you can read about her work raising awareness for Alzh and raising money to donate to studies of the awful disease. |
What a wonderful quilt! And what a great daughter for doing such a special thing for your mom so she can continue to quilt. Brought tears to my eyes thinking of how sweet you are!

Love the quilt and love the fact that you are doing something for your Mom that she is still able to do. Dementia is not fun for anyone!
I LOVE it!!! And aren't you a wonderful daughter to help her out like that? Now she can be a quilter again.
The quilt is beautiful. So good that you were able to put it all together and that you mom will be able to quilt it.
THat will be gorgeous all hand quilted by your mother! I know she appreciates you putting it together for her. It is beautiful now...please show it again after she finishes it!
The house quilt is beautiful. I like the block design in the corner of the house; it makes it unique.
Beautiful quilt!! what a special thing you are doing for your mom!!
Absolutely gorgeous !!! Yow will have a beautiful keepsake when it is finished. Lucky You...
I will let mom do the hand quilting on the top. It will give her
something to do for awhile. I really like the piecing part better. The time we spend putting tops together will always be special. I will remember them everytime I look at the quilt. I have another top that we worked on that needs a little more applique on the borders that I should finish soon. So I will be keepiing her busy for awhile. |
I love the house blocks too! I mean I really love the Sampler effect of the different centers. I hope you don't mind if I take some inspiration from your beautiful work.
I sure hope that she continues to be able to hand quilt. What a jewel you are to help her in her diminished state it must be very hard on you. Bless your heart.
You did a wonderful job on setting the blocks together. Especially since the pattern couldn't be found. You must be a natural talent at quilting. |
