I like the arrangement with all the triangles in the same direction. If it was mine, I would resew the blocks where the fabric is in a different direction and sew it together with a black sashing and border. The colors are very nice and the quilt has a modern feel to it.

gertz 01-04-2013 08:22 AM

I like the dark to light also, why not try re-arranging them so the triangles form a square then that square might take away the predominate gold. Love the colors

barny 01-04-2013 08:26 AM

I LIKE IT. IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE GOLD IS FLOATING. Don't change it.

flowerjoy 01-04-2013 09:05 AM

I always heard that a little yellow/gold goes a long way... I am a relatively new quilter and I like yellow but I try to listen to the experienced ones... maybe take away a few gold and see what happens to your eye view... I like your choice of fabrics and the gradation to the darker hues. Keep on with it and watch as it evolves... that is a fun process we all experience.

Milli 01-04-2013 09:05 AM

I like the floating to.

grammysharon 01-04-2013 01:45 PM

I agree, I like the gold but I think if you put dark sashing it would tie it all together.

ragamuffin 01-04-2013 04:07 PM

I, too, would rearrange. Since you have already taken a pic of it, you can follow that if you want to come back to that design. I would bring the black over to the left bottom corner and then keep the blocks in the same order except change
every block so the main triangles are all going in the same direction. I would consider using the plain black as border #1 on the 3 sides but not where the plain black blocks are. Then alter the borders again, gray-white, and then black, but do
the opposite on the 4th side. Play with it, go out of the room, maybe leave it for a week, and then you will see a difference, and maybe one you are very pleased with.

mom-6 01-04-2013 07:49 PM

I like it! Once you stitch it together the design will be easier to identify. At first glance it is very busy, but as I looked at it more carefully (and at a little more distance) the effect you were trying to create jumped out at me and now I'm in luv!

GrandmaJ 01-04-2013 07:50 PM

Have you tried putting a gold sash around each block?

javin22 01-04-2013 08:24 PM

I think the triangles being in all directions, gives an unrest for the eye.

BizzieLizzie 01-05-2013 01:42 AM

There is so much support for the 2nd arrangement but I beg to differ in that I think that the first arrangement is more interesting. The 2nd is more quiet/uninteresting. I think that if you can replace a few, not too many, of the gold triangles, you will probably be able to see a little more balance in the colour of the triangles. No matter what is said, you need to see what you prefer and go with your preference. I will be looking out for your finished quilt. Good Luck! :)

bbean11537 01-05-2013 04:34 AM

I think if you rearrange so the gold is not so close together it will be great. Just move the blocks around until you find what you like. I think it will be beautiful.

judibel 01-05-2013 05:15 AM

I think the blocks need to be rearranged and then the gold won't be so disturbing. I am looking at it from a diagonally pieced quilt, so to my eye, the center works ( the row with all the triangles facing down from upper right to lower left) and the row just to the right of it works too except for the bottom block - it should be gold. Try making a row above that center panel with all the triangles mirroring the row to the right of the center panel. Reverse or mirror ever row above and below the center panel. The movement will then be pleasant to follow. As it is now, the movement in the quilt is erratic and jarring so that all you see is gold with no rhyme or reason to it. Hope that helps and let me know if it does.

jtquilts 01-05-2013 05:15 AM

Being one who is more of a 'traditional' quilter who has recently begun enjoying 'modern' quilts I will say that I tended to go for the second placement . . . . . . then I went back to look at the first after reading one of the comments. I, too, see the plannedness of the triangles and think they dance more this way! I love the light to dark in both settings. Hope to hear and see what you decide.

sweetlummi 01-05-2013 05:32 AM

I think I would just move some of this light and dark around mix it up some you have all the light on the top in one corner.

lillybeck 01-05-2013 05:37 AM

I think if the layout was different you would like it better.

lynnsv 01-05-2013 05:42 AM

All I see is the gold; maybe if the triangles were all going the same way.

sewlittletime 01-05-2013 05:44 AM

I like the colors design your blocks in a different pattern. Now it looks like confetti. If this the look you want then keep this look, but if you don't change it up a bit. I do like the dark into the light.
God luck

hcarpanini 01-05-2013 05:54 AM

I love the modern look of it. Try to mix the light blocks in with the dark..

Barb_MO 01-05-2013 05:59 AM

I still like the first arrangement. I like the movement in the first one, like triangles drifting in the wind . Think I will make one like this.

Elva Jordon 01-05-2013 06:38 AM

I agree with Paulette Poe...Gold triangles aimed in the same direction would give a lot of interest to the quilt and give it a more uniform pattern. I do like the light to dark. Interesting.

At first I didn't see the pattern that the triangles were laid out in, but now I see it. It looks a bit chaotic, but I get it. I like what you're doing with this and look forward to seeing your end product!

I agree with this, too many different fabrics....but thats me LOL

quiltmom04 01-05-2013 06:46 AM

I might break up the gold with a larger square of some of the darker fabrics. All the blocks don't have to be the same size. But I agree with the others - too much gold.

I agree. Try moving the gold triangles so they are all going in the same direction...or try having half pointing northwest and the other half southeast.

NIICHMOM 01-05-2013 06:53 AM

Good Morning, I would rearrange the blocks and the gold triangles, try working them into a said block... change the pattern you are trying to form- light to dark. Put the triangles the same direction. It will wow you in the end.

Blinkokr 01-05-2013 06:53 AM

Rearrange the blocks and add a couple of blocks with red and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

WMUTeach 01-05-2013 06:54 AM

I would consider putting black sashing between the blocks or set the blocks in sets of four and then add the sashing to calm down the "business" of the squares you have made. I like the colors but I agree with others that the triangles pop out too much as presented. A different order that focus on the direction of triangles might help also.

bjr 01-05-2013 07:07 AM

I like it just like it is!

GeePatti 01-05-2013 07:21 AM

I'm certainly not very experienced, but it "feels" a little unbalanced to me. I think I'd rearrange the squares so when squinting, the darks either flow out from the center or frame a lighter center, or have alternating rows of light to dark, then dark to light. The yellows might work better then, but they do seem a bit distracting in this layout.

Neat fabrics, though. I think I'd like the polka dot as a binding.

cherylrom 01-05-2013 07:42 AM

This is a 36 block square. 24 have gold centers and 10 have various other colored center. Balancing color in any quilt is important - no matter how you rearrange these squares, the color balance is going to pop and right now all that is "popping" is gold, gold, gold. If that is what you want, great, but what if you changed out some of the gold for more subdued - look at just the bottom row - looks better color wise.

Secondly - your layout might look more appealing if more controlled. Study quilts that look scrappy and why they are appealing - usually they will have alternating layout designs. Like upper left hand corner, bottome right hand corner all the way across that row - then the next row will be reversed and on opposite corners - then third row back to the same as first fow. Hope this makes sense.

This much you do know - you know you don't like what you have now - and can learn why. Don't give up, this has potential and will be beautiful when finished and you will know a whole lot more for the next creative project.

Cheryl

I like the gold but feel the blocks need to be rearranged. For me, the light to dark just doesn't work in that particular piece

caspharm 01-05-2013 08:06 AM

I agree with rearranging the blocks and getting a more even mix of the light and dark blocks. In addition, try facing the gold triangles in the same direction and the other triangles go in the opposite direction from the gold - maybe alternating rows of the triangles.

carolynjo 01-05-2013 08:30 AM

Ditto. Rearrange the blocks and turn all the gold triangles going in the same direction. Also, make a few more plain blocks to give the eye a place to rest. Pretty colors, though, and I am sure it will be lovely once it is finished. Be sure to post again.

lin 01-05-2013 08:33 AM

I actually really like your first arrangement. I even like the block in the upper left hand corner. It anchors that upper corner and stops the eye so it doesn't roam right off the quilt. I'd love to see the room it's going in. That could make a difference in how I feel about it, but as it stands, I find it much more modern and interesting the way you had it originally. Ultimately the choice is yours though. You will know what pleases your eye and fits best in the room better than anyone else. :)

I agree with paulettepoe. On the diagonal and in the middle then the ones that aren't gold <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]-->parallel<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults v:ext="edit" spidmax="1026"/> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout v:ext="edit"> <o:idmap v:ext="edit" data="1"/> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]-->... maybe.

phusker5 01-05-2013 09:09 AM

I like the gold to black idea. If anything maybe just a few more gray tone triangles I like the arangement of the triangles - gives it some variety. Maybe some more contrast when it goes from white-gray-black but i like it overall.

I agree with Sandy.

Your choice of fabric is wonderful.

klgreene 01-05-2013 09:43 AM

The only thing I would change is the top left corner. Use a lighter background with grey triangle. So that it actually shows as light to dark on the diagonal. There isn't to much gold, and I can see the secondary design with the triangles. I think it will be a beautiful modern quilt. Stand way back from it and possibly take a picture and graystyle it. I love it.
Or if te triangles are not sewn on, I'd do all te triangles in the gold. Then the triangle pattern would stand out more. JMO

Barb_MO 01-05-2013 10:07 AM

I like this so well, I would like to get the pattern. Where can I get it?

I found a quilt pattern that uses a layer cake, cut into pieces, then resewn them back into these blocks with different colored triangles in the center. Since the color theme of the room is the antique gold with black furniture, I used the gold fabric for the triangles. Then I layed out the rows in the way the layer case was presented (light to dark). I started adding triangles from to give some more contrast, but I fill the gold is overpowering. I walked away from it for a couple of hours, and now I am asking for ideas. Do I need to rearrange the blocks? Get rid of some of the gold triangles? Just finish it as is? I was going to do the polkadot for binding, not border. I've done almost 1/2 of the blocks.

Foxflower 01-05-2013 10:32 AM

I like the gradiation and the colors. I too think it looks better with the triangles going in the same direction, or some sort of more organized way. Here is my suggestion....keep the light to dark but take the gold out of the many of the light squares and use grey and black in those squares. Also, maybe more gold backgrounds instead of just one?

I also agree with what Cheryl said on page 7. Good luck. You'll find a way that pleases you if you keep up with it. Also, if this is only half the blocks you have a lot of possibilities for change.
