I like your colors, but a more subdued gold tone-on-tone might work better so doesn't stand out as much. Just my preference, but I'd like to see what happens when you move your lights into center and frame with your darks, or inter-place them more. Also could try to turn inner triangles so points face in on 4 blocks, or as suggested all in same direction to see how that flows. I'm sure it will be nice when all done.

marla 01-05-2013 01:08 PM

The triangles all should go in one directions.

Momo 01-05-2013 02:38 PM

I am not fond of the light to dark. It looks out of balance to me, but I am a beginner. I hope you can get it so you will love it. Lots to work with. Blessins.

Dawnmarieodya 01-05-2013 03:01 PM

I would rearange the pieces and not have all the dark on the bottom and mix it up,Think the gold is fine but just mix it up more.Just play with it and it will be ok. I worked in a florest and its like flower arranging, you can do round, triangles, onlong. Put it on a wall and keep arrangeing it.If you have to cut some off to fit in. Make your border fabric to make the center to pop, then add binding in same gold to finish it off. I can see it already done.Good luck. Wish I was there to help you.You can leave the gold in center but take some of the darker and put it with the lighter top pieces. You could take the sm light pieces of triangle that is next to the gold and replace it with the sm dark triangle that will match the different fabric patterns. Please show us how it came out. God Bless Dawn

cricket_iscute 01-05-2013 03:18 PM

I would abandon the light to dark idea and try for an arrangement that had the triangles making a pattern. You might have to add sashing between four blocks each with triangles making patterns. If that didn't work, I'd use the triangles in the border and make a different center, maybe a more cohesive one, with a different pattern in the middle. Do you have enough of the fabric that is three rows up from the bottom and three rows from the left to use in the middle? If not, how about the fabric in the upper right corner? I think you need to add more fabrics, possibly some solids in black, white, and grey - but not gold! You have more than enough gold already.

noveltyjunkie 01-05-2013 03:24 PM

I find myself very distracted by the triangles- they don't look coherent to me. Tbh I think a random arrangement of the charms with no triangles would appeal to me more.

ktbb 01-05-2013 03:35 PM

I agree with rearranging them first. With the triangles pointing all different directions it makes the look too busy. my specific suggestion is to keep the center triangles either going all the same way, or only two ways...I rather like the diagonal rows where one row is pointing to the lower right and the adjacent row is pointing to the upper left. The blocks where the triangles are pointing upper right and lower left make it too confusing for my taste. Once this rearranging is done, see if you still think you have too much gold.....

ktbb 01-05-2013 03:36 PM

actually - NOTHING is wrong with it....it just isn't like you want it to look.

1screech 01-05-2013 04:36 PM

I like your quilt. I am not a gold person and I don't think it is too much. I like the way it fades from light to dark...except the first square in the left hand corner. It seems it should be white with a yellow triangle. Just my opinion.

I totally agree with paulettepoe. Looks like an 'art nouveau' quilt! I think it will look fantastic on your furniture!

inspectorcmm 01-05-2013 06:00 PM

i'd put the small rectangles together in the middle as sets of 4

sewdamncute 01-05-2013 07:25 PM

Keep playing with your arrangement. Leave it for a day or to and see it with fresh eyes!

Terricat 01-05-2013 07:41 PM

I like the 2nd lay-out, and I really like the light to dark gradation. I also like some of the triangles in black or grey or light. Could a few of the gold triangles be switched out to a different color? Just a thought . . . . I love the whole color grouping. Is there a particular line of fabric that you used?

My time 01-05-2013 10:17 PM

I agree....try rearranging your blocks.

GeeGee 01-05-2013 10:23 PM

I would rearrange the blocks mixing up the darks and lights and have the triangles all going the same way, but that's just me, I like order in my quilts.:)

Pepita 01-05-2013 11:08 PM

I think for me, the color combination needs a fabric that combines the colors. Like a border that has the gold, white and black. I too would play with the blocks and take some pictures. Put them on the computer-- you will see it from a distance that way and often the needs of the quilt become clearer. I also vote for you to wait a bit to see how the quilt grows on you.

suzanprincess 01-06-2013 02:33 AM

My two cents worth is to keep the light to dark gradation, keep the triangles going different directions. I notice there are a couple smaller gold trianges, and I like that difference, too; a couple more might look nice. How the finished quilt looks with your furniture could be the deal-breaker--is it very traditional, Asian, modern, eclectic? Every different style would accept the quilt differently! And in the end it is what YOU like when you look at it, so live with it a little while on your design wall, interviewing different looks for borders (if any--not every quilt needs a border) until you are happy with how it makes you feel to view it.

maldonmum 01-06-2013 03:39 AM

I think gold on dark fabric is maybe a little too much . Agree they would look better laying same direction , but other than that it is an extremely striking and dramatic hanging

sampson001 01-07-2013 10:22 AM

This one looks a lot better than the first layout

ArtsyOne 01-07-2013 10:32 AM

I like the second arrangement, but what struck me at the very first posting is that you have such beautiful fabrics - all of them patterned except for the gold. Maybe that's why the gold jumps out at everyone. I do like the overall color combination and can't wait to see your final product.

Sunnye 01-12-2013 11:27 AM

I'm not sure that the gold is overpowering but I would mix up the blocks; too much dark on the bottom right and too much light in the upper left.

My two cents as well. Rearrange, take pics then look at it to see which design you like.

Greenheron 01-12-2013 03:11 PM

I love the colors but it feels chaotic (to me). Mom3's rearrangement is more disciplined. Consider using her arrangement but flip every other block upside down or flip all the blocks in every other row.

Michellesews 01-12-2013 03:50 PM

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how the triangles in the blocks are turned, it seems confusing. I would rearrange until I get a pleasing look. Try having the triangles all the same place, then try every other one, and so on, until you reach a point were it says, yeah! Let us see it when you are done!

mcfay 01-12-2013 03:57 PM

Maybe if you change out the gold on the lighter blocks with black? Too much gold for my taste.

vickiehornback 01-12-2013 04:19 PM

I think it needs to have some sort of pattern, it doesn't flow together

woodyandjake 01-12-2013 04:25 PM

Pop it with small pieces of red and orange, maybe add orange streaks or red streaks to pop it out.

littlebitoheaven 01-14-2013 07:05 AM

I like the gradient idea and the fabrics are lovely. However, I do think that the "confetti" like scattering of the gold triangles takes away from both the gradient and lovely fabric. The gold block in the upper left-hand corner isn't consistent with the dark to light effect. IMHO if you organized your triangles so that there is a common square in the middle, I believe it would look more cohesive. What I do love about quilting is being able to move blocks around and seeing what glorious patterns can evolve.

winia 01-14-2013 08:49 AM

I would rearrange the blocks. I don't think the gradation with these particular colors works very well.

yonnikka 01-14-2013 09:14 AM

I see a weak Horizontal Line running from Top Right down to bottom left. I like this. But it is not Strong. Try adding some blocks that are black-on-black, with almost no contrast. Or some solid black squares. This will make a cleaner design. Since it is a small wall hanging, it might benefit by making it taller and more narrow. I'm glad you haven't sewn it yet. Keep re-arranging and show us again.

delideb64 01-14-2013 09:44 AM

I think if you arrange the triangles all the same direction would help - I think the gold works, it is on the modern side look and feel wise to me........... :-)

giquilt 01-14-2013 09:53 AM

I would rearrange the blocks kind of like a monkey wrench pattern. Then the black/light triangles will look like they belong.

bonitagaye 01-14-2013 09:55 AM

I love it!!!!

LindaMRB 01-14-2013 03:25 PM

I have not read all the comments but I think rearranging the blocks could help diminish the impact of the gold.
Also, NOT varying the direction of the gold triangle might help.
AND not putting all the dark ones together.

Take pictures as you rearrange so if you like previous iteration, you can recreate it!
(Where would we be without digital cameras!)

I really do not think what you have done is bad...once you actually sew it together you might like it better!
