Whats wrong with this quilt/wallhanging?

1 Attachment(s)
My goal was to make a wall hanging for a room in my house, but now I'm not so sure I like what I did.
I found a quilt pattern that uses a layer cake, cut into pieces, then resewn them back into these blocks with different colored triangles in the center. Since the color theme of the room is the antique gold with black furniture, I used the gold fabric for the triangles. Then I layed out the rows in the way the layer case was presented (light to dark). I started adding triangles from to give some more contrast, but I fill the gold is overpowering. I walked away from it for a couple of hours, and now I am asking for ideas. Do I need to rearrange the blocks? Get rid of some of the gold triangles? Just finish it as is? I was going to do the polkadot for binding, not border. I've done almost 1/2 of the blocks.

I think the gold stands out too much.

Sewfine 01-03-2013 01:51 PM

I would rearrange the blocks. Let's see what everyone else say.

Sandy64 01-03-2013 01:54 PM

When I look at it, all I see is gold! Too much overpowers the other blocks. Sandy64

Maybe the line between the light and medium on the left is a bit blurred, compared to the medium to dark, although I do think it is a sweet piece!

ruthrings 01-03-2013 02:13 PM

I find that the gold ties it all together. However, you could intersperse some more blocks with black, white, or grey triangles to diminish the effect of the gold. The light to dark is interesting.

paulettepoe 01-03-2013 02:16 PM

I like the gold. but believe they should all be going in the same direction.

ube quilting 01-03-2013 02:25 PM

I like the colors and IMHO thinks just having a more uniform block pattern would develope this combination into a really cool quilt.
peace

quiltsRfun 01-03-2013 02:28 PM

I'd re-arrange the blocks. That way the gold wouldn't all be together.

mighty 01-03-2013 02:31 PM

I would try rearranging the blocks.

nygal 01-03-2013 02:34 PM

I also would rearrange the blocks. I know you were going for a light to dark but I think if you mix the dark in with the light it would look better. Just don't use gold as a border..there is plenty of it there already. I like it!!

bluteddi 01-03-2013 02:47 PM

the thing that stands out most to me...... is the one gold background on the upper left. I think the gold helps brighten it, I'd try rearranging them a bit or adding or sutraction that one gold background block.. I love the dark to light gradiation

debcavan 01-03-2013 03:07 PM

I like it the way it is. Go away from it for a week. Then you will look at it with fresh eyes. I like the way the quilt changes color. Also once it is sewn together it will look like it belongs that way. Then quilting will unify too.

fred singer 01-03-2013 03:47 PM

I think that it will be great

QuiltnNan 01-03-2013 03:55 PM

i rather like the light to dark of the other fabrics. the gold doesn't bother me at all

playswithcolor 01-03-2013 04:06 PM

If this was mine, I would ask several children or non- quilters to play with the blocks and put them into an arrangement. My DD and DGD often help improve my layouts.

Maybe take a photo of the arrangement as it is now as your starting point. . Then stack up the blocks and let other people play with them. Take a photo of each persons arrangement..... I would also offer the choice of placing the blocks on a dark or something other than gold fabric when they play with them.

Sapphire_Rae 01-03-2013 04:12 PM

I would replace the square gold background upper left with light. Then i would like to see how it looks with all the triangles in gold. Then I would like to see it with the triangles all going the same direction.

At first I didn't see the pattern that the triangles were laid out in, but now I see it. It looks a bit chaotic, but I get it. I like what you're doing with this and look forward to seeing your end product!

Kathy T. 01-03-2013 04:13 PM

I like it the way it is - very nice modern design. I would take it into the room where it will be used and evaluate it there. Might just look perfect with your other gold accents.

orangeroom 01-03-2013 04:15 PM

Definitely re-arrange the blocks. It does 'scream' at me when I look at it. Whether you arrange them so four gold point all point inward and have the rest like ripples in the water (or like slight diamond shape getting bigger similar to a log cabin variation).

fayza 01-03-2013 04:20 PM

I would re-arrange the blocks having the gold all going the same direction. Maybe?

Dal Lady 01-03-2013 04:22 PM

I agree with one of the other board members, to me the triangles going in different directions is distracting. I think the gold would be fine if they all were in the same direction. Just my opinion...

Yes I agree but all in all a very nice idea Good Luck and let us know how it turns out

hairquilt 01-03-2013 05:32 PM

I love the gold with the black blocks but not so much with the lighter blocks. Mix um up & let us see again!

#1piecemaker 01-03-2013 05:39 PM

I think the gold is over powering it. I don't even know if a different arrangement will help or not. You could try. Maybe if you arranged the blocks so that the gold forms blocks might give it new dimention.

Barb_MO 01-03-2013 05:40 PM

I like it...very much. I like the way it runs from light to dark on the diagonal. The only thing I'm not liking the the gold block in the upper left hand corner. I wouldn't have any gold blocks, only the gold triangle. I like how you have the triangle place in different places on your block and turned different. in I would love a bed size quilt like this.

QUILTNMO 01-03-2013 06:39 PM

maybe rearrange the blocks black is too much in corner and then gold really stands out

Jackie Spencer 01-03-2013 06:51 PM

Well....... I like the gold, makes it shine. I can't wait to see this piece done!

QuiltingByCourtney 01-03-2013 07:02 PM

I would rearrange the gold triangles to all go one way...then maybe make the dark color blocks into rows and do a dark row, then light row, then dark row...and see how that looks..

I rearranged the gold to go all the same way. There are a couple of triangles where you have the fabric pattern going opposite than the rest of that block (indicated by the red 'x'). - Hope you don't mind I did this. Seeing it this way maybe you can visualize where you might want to make changes.

fayza 01-03-2013 07:25 PM

I think it looks great after you re-arranged :) I wouldn't worry about the fabric going in different directions the gold takes the spot light and the direction of the fabric is un-noticed.

Sapphire_Rae 01-03-2013 07:38 PM

I like it better with the triangles all going the same way. Makes my mind understand the black/white triangles better too.

Jvan228 01-03-2013 09:33 PM

I think if you organized the direction of the triangles, you would be happier with it. I love the colors. It just seems unorganized.

TacoMama 01-03-2013 10:14 PM

I would rearrange the blocks. There is too much light in the upper left and too dark in the lower right. I love the colors!

Needs a black sashing

I would add a black 2" sashing and re-arrange the blocks

DOTTYMO 01-04-2013 12:16 AM

Turn the diamonds pointing downward to the right one 90degree turning.. Then you will end up with 2 diagonal rows running top right to bottom left. Will that work.?
Initially to me it looked like a jumble of triangles. Colours didn't bother me.

SueDor 01-04-2013 03:21 AM

Yes I would rearrange the blocks and add more yellow blocks with a black or other print fabric like the top left block you have. I like the yellow triangles, but you need to add more black ones also.

Sandygirl 01-04-2013 03:35 AM

Well I LIKE IT! I see diagonal rows of blocks...light, medium and the bottom right corner is the dark. Yes, i see "dancing" gold triangles in the wall hanging but I like it. It is fun and i just wish that I could see this in person. I have a feeling that I would like it even more!

It is not like you are going to try to re-do this are you? I say leave it alone and enjoy it. Oh, i went back to look at it and it is not sewn together...duh on my part!

Take a picture of this arrangement ( ok, it is early here!). and then play with other arrangements and take pictures to compare. But, i also like it as it is. The gold is still going to be a standout but, i do like the fun of it.

Now if I had read the entire thread, i would have seen this version.

I still like the first arrangement. The gold triangles are no longer "fun". I like the movement in the first one.

I wanna see what the border will look like.

grammey1956 01-04-2013 04:30 AM

I thing the gold is to much... so just rearrange it to your liking...

RuthFru 01-04-2013 07:48 AM

I like the light to dark background is nice but I think I arrange all the triangles in the same direction then stand back and look at it. Sometimes if you walk away for an hour or so you will get a different opinion. Good luck with however you make it and please post a pic of the finished quilt.
