When the panel doesn't match the pattern...
2 Attachment(s)
You'd think I would have thought of this, but .. no.....
Panel: Recess by American Jane Patterns - Sandy Klop for Moda. Panel was about 27" long and pattern called for 38.5" - so the fun began. You can see all the strips I added to get it to the correct size. Pattern: Sidelights (Pattern #302 Mountainpeek Creations) I've looked at this pattern over and over and finally found a panel I wanted to try with it. NEVER thought about there not being a "panel" size! This would be easier if you had a focus fabric and just cut it to fit. Fabric: most from stash with not enough selvedge to read, but outer border is #21301 - Sandy Klop, American Jane Patterns' "A Breath of Avignon" by Moda Fabrics THAT IS HILARIOUS! I just looked up that fabric by pattern number and had no idea it was the same line! Got the panel for next to nothing in Houston, TX at the Texas Shop Hop back in September. It was in a basket of sale items on the porch of the shop. Bought the fabric Friday in Richmond, TX. THey had a 25% sale on all fabrics. Too funny! My husband looked at it and said - where are the other blocks? The asymetric look of it that I loved threw him. HMMMM. I'm making this for my grandson's preschool teacher for the end of year in May. Now I'm a bit concerned my daughter won't be thrilled - I want her to be thrilled! (For the record: she loves everything I do and was thrilled when I offered to make something for this precious teacher. I really want it to be something she thinks is wonderful.) Finished size: 46.5 X 62.5 (according to the pattern) |
I really like the asymmetrical look of this quilt. I think its far more attractive and eye catching. Looks great and perfect for a teaher.
I too like the way this looks. not at all like you were fixing something. It looks on purpose.
That quilt is adorable! I have that "Sidelights" pattern that I plan to make in Asian fabric (someday...). I love yours!
The "dick and jane" old school look is perfect for a teacher. I like it.
Cindy - what's even better is the teacher's DAUGHTER is the school principal! So you can imagine the age of this teacher. I know she'll know right away what she's looking at. (Private Christian school - 3-year-olds to 6th grade. I teach in a public school and you'd never have that relationship on campus -but for them - it works!)

My dh is the same way about anything asymetrical. His world is all squared up and centered I love the look of your quilt!
I love it. It looks great and not the same old thing. Great job.
Honestly, it doesn't matter what your dh or dd think of it. The teacher will absolutely love it as someone thought enough of her to make it.
I wasn't the biggest fan of a lap quilt I made for one of my ds's elementary teachers, but she was so touched that she cried. Too sweet. No one had ever made her anything quilty before. You go girl! The teacher will LOVE it!!!! |
it's a terrific quilt and i'm sure that it will mean a lot to the teacher
I was wondering what the problem was as because the panel in your photo looked like the original panel. Finish the quilt off as it's a done deal and looks great.
You did a really great job on this and lucky teacher will be very pleased as will your DD!
I like it. It looks great!
I love assemetry.....great quilt

Lovely. I really want to make the Sidelights pattern someday. I am asymmetrical which confuses a lot of people.
Sometimes you just have to be more creative and not make everything blocked and even. This is great, and I'm sure the teacher will love it.
Not sure I see your dilemma with the fabric and panel but I do like what you did.
I LOVE asymmetry. So much more interesting to me, especially in this whimsy pattern! I think it will be liked and appreciated. |
Terrific quilt! Love the asymmetrical design! The teacher will appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity! :)
Being a retired teacher, I can assure you that she will love it.
Very cute, I like it, great job and thank you for sharing.
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
That is stunning!!!
I would try to add the name of the school in the bottom gold strip, that way it would add to the size of it. I,too, like it very much. I have the Dick and Jane original book and the fabric. I think I will frame mine. I am really debating about it.
Well, rest assured my daughter loves it. Whew! Now she'd really like a quilt for the classroom aide. I have no problem with that. I'm going to make them anyway - good to have a purpose.
The panel ended at the tiny green stripe on the bottom and the tiny red stripe on the top. I added the rest of the stripes to get it to the size the pattern called for. |
No it is good. The asymetrical look adds.
Love it....the way you have designed this adds a lot of interest. Beautifully done and will be treasured for sure.

I love the asymmetrical look. Your DD and her teacher will be so pleased!

She will love it!

I think it is wonderful and I love the vintage characters!!
What teacher wouldn't just love that. It is perfect.
Perfect for a teacher. Nice job
The asymmetry is rather appealing, I think. The prints are fantastic. What a fun quilt it will be!
What a great job! It looks like it was meant to be like that.
if someone gave this to me as a gift I'd be ecstatic!
MEN :( - Why do we even listen to them when they nothing about art or quilting? Go for it and be proud.

I like it asymetrically, and as a former teacher, I am sure the teacher will treasure it with fond memories of the child.
Fear not..your quilt is just right.
