This is the finished top for my son's quilt. He went with me to the LQS and he picked out a moss green for the back of it. But here is the question----since this is so busy would it be better to just stitch in the ditch as opposed to having it quilted?

nativetexan 09-10-2011 11:35 AM

you could do some simple diagonal stitches through the squares.that would give it enough movement and be simple enough for a male's taste. great quilt.

Cherylsea 09-10-2011 11:36 AM

It is a beautiful quilt and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't stitch in the ditch. I really like stitch in the ditch myself.

Murphy 09-10-2011 11:36 AM

It is definitely personal preference, but an all over quilt pattern would make those lovely patterns pop. IMHO.

QM 09-10-2011 11:37 AM

What I would do with this quilt is SitD, then a bit of ornimental quilting in the gold blocks and border. I used to quilt everything heavily, but I am more laid back these days.

Anael 09-10-2011 11:38 AM

I agree with QM, I would do the same. Lovely quilt!

I think it does need a little more than a stitch in a ditch.

mzsooz 09-10-2011 11:39 AM

I think stitch in the ditch. That is how I do all of my quilts. Heavier quilting would detract from the beautiful florals in this quilt. IMO

This was my first thought as well. I love diagonal quilting.

clem55 09-10-2011 11:56 AM

beautiful!!!! Love the fabrics he chose.

I agree :)

Bonbonary 09-10-2011 01:32 PM

I think a simple stipple would be good...not too fancy for a guy.

Jennifer22206 09-10-2011 01:40 PM

I think it calls for a bit more than stitch in the ditch - maybe a larger all over stipple or meander?

blueangel 09-10-2011 01:50 PM

I think an allover quilting would look better.

MadQuilter 09-10-2011 02:26 PM

I don't think it's really all that busy. I am a fan of SID but I think an overall pattern would look great too.

A1penny 09-10-2011 02:30 PM

Beautiful quilt. I would SID. QM had a good recommendation. i hope your son loves it. I certainly do!

dunster 09-10-2011 02:54 PM

Either SID or FMQ will look great. Your quilt is beautiful.

Challys 09-10-2011 03:00 PM

So pretty!

sammygirlqt 09-10-2011 03:58 PM

My preference would be an all over meandering. Beautiful quilt.

Nettie Phillips 09-10-2011 04:52 PM

I am not sure about the quilting but it is very pretty.

Sewfine 09-10-2011 06:00 PM

That is simple gorgeous. Need some design to bring out the colors and design.

Mitch's mom 09-10-2011 06:22 PM

He has good taste. Ask him what he would prefer; you may get a surprising answer.

Rose Cactus 09-10-2011 06:28 PM

Beautiful quilt and Im a big fan of quilting in the ditch.

Lady-T 09-11-2011 03:53 AM

I agree. Love the colors in this quilt!!

rather B stitchin 09-11-2011 06:43 AM

I think something like a sunflower all over design would work well with the fabrics

mim 09-11-2011 06:52 AM

shadow quilting would make the blocks stand out. Perhaps shadow in the white blocks and STID on the darks

Mim

It is a beautiful quilt.

mucky 09-11-2011 07:31 AM

I would like the diagonal stitching.

glorcour 09-11-2011 07:34 AM

I would do an all over pattern even a simple stippling would look great

lauriequilts 09-11-2011 08:10 AM

An allover pattern would look great on the quilt. It wouldn't take away from the quilt, and there are several masculine patterns to choose from.

JCL in FL 09-11-2011 08:43 AM

You'll have as many opinions as you have tastes. Some of us aren't into all the fancy quilting and for some you just can't do too much quilting. Go with what you like and you can't go wrong. It's s really nice quilt, your son must have inherited his taste.

Halo 09-11-2011 08:59 AM

I think I would do the cross hatch quilting on it. It is beautiful & the cross hatch wouldn't take away from its beauty.

PWinston 09-11-2011 09:31 AM

I vote for a simple all over quilting rather than stitch in ditch. The fabrics are gorgeous and a more curvy stitching would enhance the quilt - IMHO.

mim 09-11-2011 10:23 AM

Be sure to show us what you decide on -- I'm sure we will like what ever method you choose

Mim

MargeD 09-11-2011 11:26 AM

It's beautiful. Personally I like to do cross hatching through the squares - corner to corner, just sew through the squares corner to corner in both directions.

quilts4charity 09-11-2011 11:34 AM

Gorgeous quilt, no opinion on the quilting tho!!!

SWEETPEACHES 09-11-2011 11:39 AM

ooooooh that's so pretty

Challys 09-11-2011 11:43 AM

What is the name of this pattern?

IdahoSandy 09-11-2011 11:57 AM

I vote to have it quilted. Love the quilt.

Depends on how big those squares are and what the suggested distance to quilt is for the batting you use. You may need to do more than stitch in the ditch to keep the batting stable when it is washed
