Now, the pattern calls for mitered borders. I'm scared. I've never done mitered borders before. Actually, all my borders have been kind of haphazard, make-them-fit kind of borders. How can one be scared of fabric? :| But I am.

That's looking great.
I've thought about ordering some of Jinny Byer's kits. Did she send you plenty of everything you needed? Just curious.

johnette 04-25-2010 11:45 AM

Haven't cut into the border fabric yet, but so far I have a strip of every fabric left and some extra blocks I didn't cut into.

ann clare 04-25-2010 11:47 AM

Stunning

marsye 04-25-2010 12:13 PM

Awesome!

Pam 04-25-2010 12:51 PM

So pretty! Mitered corners are no big deal. Just remember that you must square up after you sew thim on, and you will be OK. I am sure there are wonderful tutorials on here.

sharon b 04-25-2010 12:54 PM

WOW  Great Job  I love the way black backgrounds make the other colors pop

redquilter 04-25-2010 12:55 PM

That's stunning!

quiltsRfun 04-25-2010 01:22 PM

I've seen that pattern but wouldn't dare tackle it. You're doing a great job. Congratulations!

TeresaT 04-25-2010 01:36 PM

So pretty. It looks 3D

barnbum 04-25-2010 01:46 PM

Oh that is gorgeous!! I love seeing the progress!!

I was scared the first time I tried mitered corners--and was shocked at how easy it was--well--more complicated for sure--but it went fine. I found a website that showed me step by step.

Harmony 04-25-2010 01:49 PM

Now, THAT is a complex quilt! I'd have torn all my hair out by the time I got as far as you have! Beautiful!

Pamela Artman 04-25-2010 02:30 PM

Very cool! I love Jinny Beyer's quilts!

isnthatodd 04-25-2010 02:36 PM

I absolutely love this! It's going on my to-do list, and I am going to look for the pattern immediately. I appreciate your showing us sort of step-by-step, because it looks very intimidating, but you made it look at least possible.

sewnsewer2 04-25-2010 02:37 PM

You're doing a GREAT job!

amma 04-25-2010 02:41 PM

WOW!!! Your quilt is stunning!!! I love the fabrics, the light play, you have done a beautiful job on this!!! :D:D:D

PittsburghPam made a tutorial for us on mitered corners

dsb38327 04-25-2010 03:10 PM

thimblebug6000 04-25-2010 04:05 PM

What a fantastic job you are doing! I also really appreciate any of Jinny's designs/fabrics www.jinnybeyer.com I was fortunate to be able to attend one of her seminars in Carolina.....IF WE EVER WIN BIG ON THE LOTTO.....she's my dream "win" as far as quilters go!!!!!!!!!!! Well I can't seem to get her website to post as a link, so will let this be and you can search it out yourselves......

sylvia77 04-25-2010 04:35 PM

I was wanting to make this one and after seeing yours, I know I'm going to have to make it for sure! It's beautiful Johnette!

JanetM 04-25-2010 05:37 PM

Oh, you have done such a beautiful job. I've seen this pattern and debated whether I should try it. Jinny Beyer sure is the master when it comes to using color.

Your quilt is stunning...I am really impressed. :-P :-P :-P

quiltingnonie 04-25-2010 07:02 PM

I ordered this fabric pack (but not the whole kit) and made all the blocks and sewed them into rows. THEN I realized my rows are not exactly even so didn't sew them into the four large blocks. Now they sit. :( I either have to take them apart or try to trim them all to a uniform size. I am REALLY disappointed in myself...

theresse 04-25-2010 08:17 PM

WoW That is really a nice Qt. Thanks for all the pic. Theresse

wvdek 04-25-2010 08:55 PM

I am in awe. Stunning colors.

k3n 04-25-2010 11:24 PM

Beautiful!

GailG 04-27-2010 04:00 AM

This is probably coming to you too late for the mitered borders. I saw Alex Anderson demonstrate an easy way to miter borders. I don't know how to describe it except that the borders are sewed all the way along each side stopping and starting 1/4 in from the edge on each side. Then she showed how to fold one side back on itself and press the miter. I tried it and it works well. I wish I could give a better description, but maybe someone hear knows of it and can guide you. I mitered stripes this way and the corners are perfect enough for me.

iltoaz 04-27-2010 06:46 AM

Cool Quilt. Looks like you're on the mark with organizing to have it all come together.

I have gone online and found tutes to help with the mitered borders. I had to do this one time when I was at my dd and didn't have my books. Worked well.

reneebobby 04-27-2010 09:44 AM

cool

sylvia77 04-27-2010 12:15 PM

Ditto for me too GailG!

hilda Vest 04-27-2010 01:31 PM

Looks like a lotta work, but they're beautiful. I like the way you've included black to tone down the brilliant colors. Very creative!!
How wide are the strips? They look pretty narrow, but that shouldn't be a deterrent.

When I saw this quilt in a magazine a couple of months ago, I soo wanted to make one. Even went so far as to go online to order the fabric pack. But it was backordered at the time so I didn't get it and convinced myself it was way too complicated anyway. After seeing yours, I just may go back and order that fabric if I can find the magazine again. Great job. Let us see the finished product.

isnthatodd 04-27-2010 02:13 PM

Got my kit ordered, altho I will have to wait, as they are backordered. That's ok, tho, because I still have 3 to do by the end of May, for which I already have all the fabric I need.

roselady 04-27-2010 02:31 PM

I have a kit that I bought years ago on sale, all cut, that must be that quilt!! It doesn't have the black included, just the gradated colors. I didn't know what I was buying at the time, how funny. Its beautiful. Mitering is easy, don't fret. Easy to say, I know, each time I've done it, I still worry, and each time it goes together great. This past Christmas, I even did a striped, mitered border, so it had to be perfect for the stripes to line up. It went together perfect. You will do fine, and be so proud after!!

johnette 04-27-2010 05:03 PM

Thanks for the mitering suggestions and encouragement. I am going to tackle it this weekend. The kit came with 6 inch squares. I rotary cut an inch and a half off one side then put the resulting 4.5 x 6inch blocks on my Go cutter and cut (4) inch and a half strips from it. So the strips are 1.5 by 4.5. That looks confusing to me, but it made sense when I was doing it. It worked up really fast with the GO. The actual piecing was simple as well. You can find the pattern in the April 2010 issue of McCall's Quilting magazine.

MaryAnna 04-27-2010 05:43 PM

wow it's just gorgeous! can't wait to see it when it's all done!
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna
