I am making this pink and black quilt for my DGD graduation present. I was going to use the floral for the backing ; but she wants flannel. Do you think the floral would work as a border or not? the pink in the floral almost looks lavendar next to the pink in the quilt. Thanks for looking.

BrendaY 03-23-2011 11:04 AM

This is a beautiful quilt!

I think the floral fabric is gorgeous. I just don't think it works as a border with this quilt.

Your quilt has a clean crisp graphic quality without the border. The floral fabric looks almost embroidered, beautiful, but it seems like it belongs on a fancier quilt.

QuiltnNan 03-23-2011 11:07 AM

I don't think I'd use the floral. do you have more of the pink or black?

fabric_fancy 03-23-2011 11:09 AM

i'm sorry but i think that fabric for the border would take away from the beauty of the quilt

Ramona Byrd 03-23-2011 11:09 AM

I think this lovely quilt stands on its own. Perhaps a solid color would still show up the strong pattern.

Nice quilt, she'll treasure it for years, since she had a hand in picking colors.

Lightening57 03-23-2011 11:09 AM

I agree with the others. Maybe a different color like pink and black stripe.

rusty quilter 03-23-2011 11:10 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, but I have to agree that your other fabric will stand out more with a solid color border.

I don't have anymore of the brite pink sashing. but have more of the dots.

lileth1374 03-23-2011 11:15 AM

In my opinion, I wouldn't use the floral fabric. I would use the pink or black. The quilt is beautiful.

lovingmama 03-23-2011 11:15 AM

Your quilt is very beautiful, as in my opinion, I wouldn't use the floral as a border.

Should you do have more of the dots, I think that would work great.

Let us see more of your gorgeous quilt, when it's done.

milp04 03-23-2011 11:16 AM

The quilt looks very nice. From the picture the floral appears to match. However, since you said that it looks or reads as a lavendar then I would probably keep searching for a fabric to use as the outside border fabric. Since your DGD want flannel for the backing then have flannel as the quilt is for her.

Is it possible to have her help you pick out the fabrics for both the outside border(s) and the backing? This would be best if at all possible. If she's in another city, then mail her fabric swatches and have her look in her area and find what she likes. She can then get the information and a fabric swatch and sent it back to you.

It seems that children really do have strong opinions about what they like. They like bright colors. I would do my best to make it to her liking. She will love that she got to be a part of the quilt making process. Maybe a future quilter's lurking inside?

I think the dots or a solid color would add to the quilt since it is for a younger person. The colors are beautiful, also I would use one of the dots for a backing and she will have a reverisible quilt.

SuzyQ 03-23-2011 11:37 AM

I love the quilt! I think I'd pass on the floral though ... the quilt is very crisp and neat looking and I think the floral would take away from it. JMHO

I'd use a narrow solid black eye stopper strip, then a nice border of the dots. Binding could be black or the dots again. I hope you mean the pink dots on black. I like those. In fact, I bought some from a board member last year.

I agree

wolph33 03-23-2011 11:41 AM

that is beautiful-the floral is pretty but not as a border on this quilt-distracts eyes away from your beautiful work

I was just going to suggest the dots if you need a border for size.

I think a polka dot fabric border would look great! Do you have any of the black/pink left to use for the border?

My suggestion, as well. Audition the dots.

suezquilts 03-23-2011 11:52 AM

Hi!
I love the quilt, and the border you picked.

JoyVoltenburg 03-23-2011 11:58 AM

I would get something different for a border. You could use it along with some of the other colors for throw pillows though. Love the quilt.

Kitsapquilter 03-23-2011 12:20 PM

I like the floral fabric but it looks a bit too busy for that quilt. Do you have any of the grey in the quilt left? Maybe add a thin border of the grey and then a wider border of the black with the pink polka dots! It is a very nice quilt and I am sure the lucky girl will love it.

auntmag 03-23-2011 12:52 PM

I think the floral would work as the back, but not for a border.

maine ladybug 03-23-2011 02:15 PM

Personally, I wouldn't use the floral. I would look for something with a geometric look I think. JMHO

Vivian Ketron 03-23-2011 03:06 PM

I think it would make a nice border. Beautiful quilt.

IrishNY 03-23-2011 05:29 PM

The quilt is beautiful! I wouldn't use the floral - the quilt is modern and minimalist - and floral doesn't go with that style.

I don't think it needs a border at all.

Krystyna 03-24-2011 03:01 AM

What a lucky girl. The quilt is gorgeous. I agree that the floral isn't the best choice, but who knows? It might look great, too.

justlooking 03-24-2011 03:51 AM

Beautiful quilt!

I agree with irishrose. A solid black border, then a border of the dots.......then I would bind with the black.

BettyGee 03-24-2011 05:18 AM

The quilt is gorgeous, but I'd opt for another choice on the border. The two don't go together for me, but that's just my opinion.

dinlauren 03-24-2011 05:25 AM

I agree with the others...the floral is taking away from the beatiful quilt. Keep looking........there is something that is just right out there.

That is beautiful! Do you have enough of the black with pink dots, that would be gorgeous!

Sallyflymi 03-24-2011 05:44 AM

I would go with the dots for a border. Beautiful quilt. lucky DGD.

debcavan 03-24-2011 05:48 AM

Flannels are so comfortable, but they also wear out sooner. There will be wonderful colors of flannel that will look great with it. The quilt top is wonderful and happy.

As an old seamstress, I have to take the time to warn you to prewash the flannel is you use it. Some people even wash it twice. It shrinks a lot

grandma anna 03-24-2011 05:59 AM

Beautiful.

My thoughts also:-)

thenonnielady 03-24-2011 06:30 AM

maybe the lighter pink dotty fabric for an inside border and plain black for the outside. the floral would probably make a nice binding?? Nice quilt tho.....DGD will love it!!
