We had neighbors many years ago who did the same thing for their 3 yr son's room. He didn't require much sleep and this way he could play safely while Mom napped. He started climbing over the baby gate at age 2 and she was going crazy from lack of sleep.

I had that years ago for a night wandering toddler! I had to lock her in. She would wander the house and sometimes the yard...Lord knows where she'd go next! No matter what I locked she could get out. Houdini! But I could hook and eye the screen door on the outside where she couln't get to it! The screen kept her in and gave me absolute sight and sound access to the little monster. I could lock it but have no trouble getting in in an emergency. Heck you could go through the screen if you had to. Thank God, she and I survived that period. She is now in lher forties and I don't care where she goes! It's her hubby's problem now.
