I just finished my first block for Logan's Twin Starflower quilt! Here is the pattern http://www.quilterscache.com/S/StarflowerBlock.html

I'm so excited this is so much fun and it's easier then I thought it would be.

My ? is... it's supposed to be a 12" block and it came out 13" Did I make the seams way too small? It called for a "scant 1/4" seam so I did that and I wonder if I shouldn't?

Anyway, should I do them all like this and just have a bigger quilt or should I figure out why it's too big?

Oh and do they have square rulers that are 13" or bigger? I want t make sure this is square and trim it but I don't have a ruler big enough. Thanks!!!!

Check your 1/4 inch seam. If you are making all of your blocks yourself it doesn't matter if the block size isn't what it's suppose to be. They will all go together and look just fine. The only time you want to make sure you have the 'correct' size is when 'it matters' ie: swaps, samplers (where each block may turn out a different size) and when you just WANT it the 'right' size.

As far as rulers large enough to square up a quilt block there are several out there. Omni, Creative Grid, June Taylor, Eleanor Burns all have large square rulers.

are just a few sites that have different types.

Nice star.

It seems like you might have your points cut off when you will put
your blocks together or you will have very narrow seams which may
cause more problems later. If I were you I would redo it.
I don't like to use the term scant 1/4". I think it confuses a lot of people
and it will vary depending on fabric and thread used. So it's easier to just
sew three strips of fabric 1 1/2" wide, press and check if you get the perfect
1/4". If not adjust your needle a tad and test again. Hope this helps.

Is 12" the finished size? If so then it should be 13" now and you will lose the inch once the block is sewn to other blocks.

If you sew 1/4 inch seams, I think it will be 12 1/2 inches when finished! You would be sewing 1/2 inch seams if it were to be 12 inches finished. That would cut of your points for sure.

Ok I need to make a new one tonight to see if I can make it smaller. I think my seams may be too small

Ok, I didn't have any coffee yet but I think it should be 12.5" unfinished
and 12" finished. (12" + 1/4" + 1/4"= 12.5" )
