Things to avoid when doing a twister....
#1
I'm posting a few pieces from experimenting that I'm not too happy with.
The second group are okay but have things I was trying.

Brown in corner too similar to border and beiges that blend side by side. This piece is made from the squares left from a layer cake size twister block made into a throw. The pieces are placed exactly as they were in the throw.

1st one-border too busy, 2nd-colors just blend in places

Leftover brights-some blend-just trying them

I'm happy with this. Mitered a stripe for the border to cut using my fast method for doing mitered corners.

Fall wreath-okay but might have placed red/rust apart.

Basically, then, similar rules (or color/value advice) used in a quilt made up of traditional 4Patch blocks. ;-)
Once you see it all laid out like that, it's a great exercise in value placement.
And that striped mitered border on the Halloween one - DIVINE!!!

They all look great, but I especially like the Halloween one. I have the same issues with color/value placement. A design board really helps. Also, after you have layed out your squares, but before you sew, take a photo and study that. For some reason, having it condensed to a small size really makes the placement problems jump out.

Twister quilts are so fun! I made my first one this summer. Here's my blog post about it. http://lrdesignsquilting.com/blog/archives/664 All the fabrics were from my stash of bright "scraps".

I have started taking pictures of all layouts for quilts and am mostly happy with that. Occasionally one seems okay and then I am surprised.
I always like the ones that are checkboard in the layout. I have one with 2" squares of 30's prints and white background that I have completed the first step of sewing blocks and have started cutting the little pinwheels-tedious.
