That is beautiful. I can’t believe it ‘only’ took 8 hours - it would take me so much longer and the quality would be half as good

"thunk"--that was my jaw hitting the floor. At least we know ripping out stitches was involved too, ha ha!

It is beautiful and the heron looks like it is ready to step off the quilt.

Beautiful work of art. Thank you for your description of doing it. I have done a couple of Tony Whitney designs but the finished product lacked the wonderful dimensional look that yours portrays. I admire your work.

Exquisite quilting on a stunning feature. I, too, am curious about the beak and tail. Will the original maker sew on a border and bring it back to you to finish the quilting?

LOL, I didn't think anyone else would be curious about that so I PM'd Quiltingshortimer. But now that you have asked too.... Here is what I wrote to quiltingshortimer. The pattern calls for fusible interfacing to help stiffen those bits up, then you fuse it to another piece of fabric to back it and cut it out and leave the edges raw, stay stitching around the edge about 1/8". The piece is left loose (not fused) from the background about 1" or so from the edge of the top and is fairly stiff. So when she goes to bind the quilt she will have to fold those two pieces back towards the top and the binding will go behind them and they will be left raw edge.
