you are not cutting squares, when you have stitched the third fabric on both sides and are ready to cut the blocks, you will be actually cutting TRIANGLES ... if you put the 45 degree angle of your ruler on to the seam line and make your cuts, you will be cutting triangles, then you open them up and they are squares.

Thank you so much. That first cut had me so mixed up, It was so small and I knew it wasn't right. In the tutorial they don't show the small cut unless I missed something. I wasted the whole strip trying to figure this out. I do think it all makes sense not thanks to you.

Once you sew your two strips together, press them open then measure the width. Cut a strip of fabric that width, then sew this strip (right sides together) along both edges to make a tube. Then lay your 45 degree mark of your quilting ruler along one seam and make a cut. Turn the ruler to the other side's seam and lay the 45 degree mark on that seam and make another cut. When you open that "triangle" it gives you a very interesting block. Hope this makes sense.

this was posted early on in the discussion and it is one of the best up close super slow how to make the tube quilt videos I have found. It is addicting. When I am done with my quilts for kids that will be my next ten projects! (ok maybe 3)

Sometimes I don't get a chance to get on here for a couple of days or so, but thanks to all of you for answering questions about the blocks.

My strips are 2.5 inches. I sewed two 2.5" strips together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Then, I sewed a 4.5" strip to those first two, to make the tube.
Somewhere on one of my strips, I messed up, and the two strips I sewed together didn't come out 4.5" inches. Always measure your two smaller strips to see what the width is, then cut the wider strip to that size.

You don't have to stick with 2.5" strips. I am excited to try smaller strips and larger strips and more than 3 strips, but that's just my crazy brain working overtime. I like to test out new stuff to see if it will work.

My squares are about 6 1/4", so if 4 blocks are sewn together, it would give you about a 12" block.

LOL! If/when my new sewing room is finished, I have a wall in mind to use for a design wall. There are no outlets on that wall, and it is near a door and will be a heavy traffic area, so no tables or anything would work there.
If I had time, I would be dangerous.
