A few months ago, I purchased Superman and Batman fabric to make matching quilts for my 2 friends who are dating. I made the Superman quilt (http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-106192-1.htm) and love it. I finished the individual blocks for Batman, laid it out to start pinning, and OMG it's busy. And I don't think it's tolerable busy, but more of a shield your eyes and run away busy

So I would appreciate suggestions on what to do. I don't want to start seam ripping perfectly good seams. I'd rather find a way to adjust the block layout or ...? to calm this baby down.

Pictures: 1st one is the whole quilt. The borders will go all the way around, I just wanted to get a rough idea if they would be enough to calm the quilt.
Pic 2: Close up of one section, showing the blocks in greater detail.
Pic 3: The individual block. So whatever adjustments happen, I want the blocks to be left in tact.

Thank you!

OMG, shield your eyes and run away!! I think the bat signals look like ants :D

How about putting a black strip between the blocks perhaps that might work?

Thanks for that idea. Makes logical sense. Rough mock up in Excel/Paint. What do you think??

Here's with a black border too

I agree, it needs some solid dark somewhere within the body so I guess sashings , unless you want to use a solid dark as alternate blocks, maybe quilt the batman logo in it.

And maybe a small black border before adding the batman border fabric?

I would say - some kind of solid material in the blocks to set off the batman blocks - then you would see the batman with out all the interference of the other blocks.

So these are 12" blocks (didn't mention that, duh). So would you suggest solid 12" blocks in between? I really like that idea, including quilting the logo (since I do have a long arm coming in a few months), but my concern is 12" might be too big of a mostly empty space, ya know?

What a great ideal, really toned it down a lot!

Agree! Maybe make the border wider than the sashing ???, then a black binding too.

I know you want to keep those blocks intact, but that black border really needs to be around the Batman squares in order to be effective.

Leaving it where you now have it, around the blocks. just makes breaks up your one busy quilt top into 20 busy blocks.

All three fabrics are the pretty close in value, which is why you can't distinguish any one of them.

If it were my quilt, I'd surround the squares with black and them maybe blue to give it some more interest.
Then put the the other fabrics around them to make a bigger block.

You might have to do some recutting, but those squares would really show well.
