daylily question
I know it's been hot and dry this summer, but... for those of you who are growing daylilies, is it normal for them to have more dead leaves than live ones at this point in the season?
|
My daylillies are in a larger planter - not in the ground. Seems to me the flowers were alot less this year but I still have lots of green leaves - haven't noticed alot of dead leaves yet. But you are a bit farther north than I am.
|
My daylillies are dead and gone until next year. Time here to cut them off.

A lot of my plants are stressed this year from the heat. What the heat didn't effect the bugs did. I have been plagued with Japanese beetles. My Day lillies bloomed early and lost there blooms quickly. At least I got enjoy them before the beetles showed up. The leaves are a little worse for wear now but not too bad.

Yes, Day Lillies can put up with a lot, especially the dryness we've had - but the heat really did a number on them. I normally still have some that are blooming (I have about 50 different var), but not this year. And I have a ton of dead leaves - almost looks like October clean-up-time in the Day Lilly bed!!
Not to worry though, they should come back next year and be just fine. |
I agree with DogHouseMom. Daylillies adapt very well to their growing conditions. I got very little blooms this year ..... same with iris and other perenial flowers. I'm looking forward to a better summer next year. Weeds did very well considering.

This time of year, especially when stressed, they are using their energy on the bulb, not the leaves.

We are on the west coast and mine had very little blooms this year. My plants are not as green as they usually are even with fertilizer! I think it just wasn't a good year. I agree with MaryMo my weeds did great this year and the weed killer didn't want to work so I have been pulling, pulling and pulling and we do not have a small yard! Ugh!
|
My "weeds" have been flourishing! Never been quite as bad as this summer. They have almost taken over my landscaping and they've been so bad that my yard man can weed eat them easier than pulling them up....not exactly the look I wanted though!! My lilies suffered badly.

Maybe it is time to split them up. about every 4 years i split up my daylilies and
peonies. they get to big and smother them selves out. i do the same with iris too. |
