Best Chair for Back
 

I am using a tall sewing machine cabinet and need a good chair with seat hight of around 28-30". The market has every price from $59 to $1000 plus. During the stay at home order I find myself sewing for hours daily using a wooden bar stool or standing. In the morning I am a bit stiff. What do you use?

I use an office chair....the kind with five rolling feet.....I don't get the cheap ones like the big box stores carry cuz I find they are not adjustable enough nor do they last very long....my best office chair is one I got at a local office supply/furniture store....it was a Herman Miller chair and it was used as a company had changed their color scheme….It is very adjustable....I can change the tilt of seat, the height, the depth of the seat....the back support.....and it has held up well....I did pay $100 for this used chair and it was worth every penny and if I had to do it over again, I would have bought a few more....this chair lives in my long arm room and I used it to move along my long arm when I had a very bad bout of plantar fasciitis...I do have 2 cheaper variety up at my sewing cabinet and my computer desk....but the one in the long arm room is my favorite...I need to have someone help me carry it upstairs once all this isolation stuff is over.....

I'm a big believer in ergonomics and just about any cheap office chair will give you a better seat than what you are using. Keep in mind that a chair is not a set once and forget type of thing, if for no reason other than the gas cylinders will actually wear out faster from lack of use than from use. Adjust your chairs as needed, each day we are just a bit taller or shorter or whatever than the day/hour before. You didn't mention but I love a moveable chair with roller ball wheels more than a standard type chair.

I prefer a well stuffed steno chair (armless). I was a trained musician and still never sit all the way back. For my hubby, he wants a chair with a back. You need a height adjustment at a minimum, and you need the right width/length of seat. Preferably you will be able to adjust the tilt of the seat, and the back if you have one. For those of us who are larger, it makes a big difference -- get the bigger, heavier duty chair. Chairs have weight ratings, most are for less than 300 pounds, some cheaper chairs less than that.

I have a long torso and relatively short arms and lengths. My seat is lower than people expect (because of the torso) but my correct keyboard height is table top and not the keyboard drop -- those are always too low for my short little alligator arms. You can really tell my short legs by my car seat, to get to where I can pump in the brake at full, I have to be right under the steering wheel.

Sewingpup you got quite a deal! I looked up the chairs, both new and previously owned...big bucks.

Great information! I am leaning towards ergonomic chair, but need to find previously owned as the cost is really a lot for the high chair, sometimes listed as a stool.

I have exactly what Tartan has and I bought it at a Thrift Store for $5.00. However, with the isolation situation it isn't possible to browse thru any store. Could you get a high back chair like a kitchen chair and put a pillow behind you? Good luck to you and take care of yourself.

I use an adjustable chair with no arms and sit to the side of the chair with the point of the chair between my knees. We recently had a Physical Therapist come to our guild meeting and showed different ways to sit on different types of chairs. It was great!

I use a hundred dollar office chair without arms. Used it about ten years. Still looks new. I sew four to six hours a day.
