remember the good ol' days? what was your favorite saying that you catch yourself using today?

sewgull 04-25-2010 08:31 AM

My Granmother used to say cover your legs when you are lying down. If you don't you surely catch a cold. I think of this everytime I lay down.
Always cover a baby with a light blanket when you put it to bed, and when holding baby.
I think there is a lot of truth in these old saying, our ancesters were smarter than we give them credit.

"Can't" is a coward and too lazy to try. :^)

"Lady born, Lady bred, dresses her feet, and then her head"

"Pretty is as pretty does"

The one I find myself using most is, "You might as well say it as to think it!"

Oh, do I remember that one. I NEVER went out the door on a date without my dad saying "act like a lady" but he would be looking at the guy!! One boyfriend said, your dad sure knows how to deflate things doesn't he. But the two that I remember most from my mom and have used my self are "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and "if your friend jumped off a cliff would you? Be a leader not a follower." Oh, here's one more "if you lay down with dogs, you catch fleas". There are so many and they are all good advice and just as true today.

some of the things I remember my dad saying frequently I can't repeat--can anyone relate?

My kids and grands will remember me for "You'll live!" and "It could be worse!" Which I heard from my mom all the time.

my granny (great-grandmother) said two things that my mother repeated to us, and then I've repeated...

"No matter how crooked the branch, there's always one to match it" (on finding a mate)

and

"Don't go to bed with anybody you wouldn't want to marry"

of course that was back in the days when if you got pregnant, you were scandalized and got married etc... people haven't changed - other people's attitudes have - what was once a disgrace people don't even bat an eye over any more...
