I ventured into a fabric store yesterday. I needed 2/3 of a yard of a blender. I got it, but I also bought a yard of a blue batik. Both will be used before the week is up. I left a pretty purple batik there as it would not have been used. All in all, I feel I stayed within the parameters of the moratorium. Too bad I had to buy fabric, but good I only bought what will be used immediately. I resisted three shelves of fabrics for $6 a yard. The bright modern prints called my name, but I quickly gave my attention to the pretty 30s prints which weren't calling me and exited.
When I arrived the owner greeted me with, "I wondered where you have been." Does that indicate I used to spend too much there? |
Bad news: the owner of one of my local quilt shops is retiring.
Good news: one of her employees will be taking over. Bad news: they are going to have a huge inventory reduction sale before she does... We will see how good my resolve is! |
The row by row is also doing me in. I am having a bad shopping month and have definitely fell off the wagon. I am keeping track though and figured I would report the damage at the end of the month as DH and I are going on vacation at the end of the month and will be stopping at some of the LQS along the way that are participating in the Row by Row.

I ordered a bolt of Warm Blend batting last night - 50% off at Joann online and free shipping. If this won't motivate me to whittle down my UFO pile I don't know what will.
Had a quilt class on Thursday and took 3 yards from my stash. When I got to the LQS I realized that my contrast and color didn't work so I HAD TO buy 2 yards to use in the class. Here is what I made. This is my new go-to pattern for sure. |
Very pretty quilt Mad Quilter. Looks like it was a fun class.

Martina: Love that purply red, and with the pink, that is going to be a great quilt. Paper Princess: Great tut. I am off and on the Board most days but missed your thread. Thanks for the second chance.
I bought 1 1/2 yards of blue fleece to finish a fleece blanket today along with a spool of thread and a packet of sewing machine needles. The blanket will be donated in November to a 'once a year' blanket tying party where the blankets are given to organizations that help people in need due to health, home situations, etc. It was on sale so I could also use my teacher discount.
I also have been good about not going to garage sales this summer. That doesn't mean I haven't accumulated more material because I have had donations given to me to use for quilts for a couple of places that I volunteer. So my stash has grown but basically through donations. :) Connie |
I can't remember the last time I bought a lot of fabric. I'm guessing before Christmas. I met The Man in Seattle for a long weekend since he was there for a conference. I got there just in time for the conference dinner Thursday night at Suncadia Resort and on Friday morning we went into Seattle for the weekend. All the walking about did me in, I won't lie, but I made a find at Undercover Quilts in the Pike's Place Market. I bought the "Glacier" quilt kit, a coordinating FQ bundle to make help stretch it to king size (I hope), 2 other beautiful batik FQ bundles in yellow/orange/red, and 2 patterns for 12" beach themed blocks. If I hadn't had to have flown it home, I probably would have bought matching yardage for the rest of the expansion and backing, but I'm hoping I can find a coordinating fabric online. I wanted a couple other instructions, but found them either too vague or they were paper piecing, which scares the bejesus out of me. I spent nearly $200, but he said buy whatever I liked and waited in the "husband parking" area outside, then carried it the rest of the day for me. I'll definitely go back if I'm ever in Seattle again!

Quiltmouse, Please don't hang your head. Hold it up high and smile. Sometimes a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do and I think you definitely needed that white for the projects you have planned. Nothing wrong in buying for something we are making soon.
Martina, The baby quilt is very cute. I can see why you have a 'reputation' ...and a good one at that. Laynak, I think you did awesome to make it 9 months without a fall. Paperprincess, who can resist a sale. I think we have a clause that gives us a free pass when there is a sale we can't ignore. What's wrong with saving money! LOL! Dusty'smomma- I am glad you have such a nice 'guy' and to even carry your purchases for the rest of the day. Wow! Sadly, I have not had much of a chance to sew/quilt in the last month . Too much company and a summer yard! I think I am hoping for a long, cold winter. At least I have not bought anything for 2 weeks since my little purchase from CT of the flannel quilt with the colored squares. ...oh and two thimbles. |
My husband made me fall off the wagon he took me on my birthday and bought me 9 yards of fabric to make a bargello it turned out great. But i also sold some of my stash to a lady that just lives down the street. She needed fabric and i needed some cash till payday so i think it evened out for the month

Been behaving myself. I think I even decided that I am not getting the new machine. After a thorough review and some serious self-talk I realized that the added features were really not worth the difference in price. I've been working with Quilla and she and I get along famously. Her little quirks are easy to deal with.
So, MadQuilter, you are one strong woman to resist the temptation of a new machine. Good for you! Sometimes bells and whistles are just that. You are awesome!
One way to stay on the wagon....don't enter a Quilt shop:D:D:D I too have been a good girl for a couple of months!
Well shoulders thrown back, head held high, no purchases of fabric in July. Actually used approx. 20 yards from my stash. When should we start worrying about the health of the textile industry? Stay strong everyone the fall fabric sales are on the horizon.
Another month down and no fabric purchases. I did buy thread last month. I have a real challenge coming up though. My wall hanging (Cherry Blossoms) won first in the county fair special wall hanging contest so now I have a gift cert for a quilt store. I'll look at books, patterns and tools though!!

Congratulations, Scissor Queen.
I am struggling with assorted round robins and last night (2 glasses of Brandy later) I plowed through my stash and found fabric for one of them. YEAH! No fabric shopping required. I am pretty sure I have fabric for the others too, I just need to get more Brandy, |
Scissor Queen: I think however you choose to spend your award you should be quilt free. Congratulations on the recognition you earned. Martina: First time I've heard of brandy being a method to get the creative juices flowing. Next time someone asks what your favorite quilting tool is I bet you have one no one else does.
I made the mistake of taking my recently finished quilt to the quilt shop to show my favorite owner. Needles to say , I bought 3.5 yards of fabric I just had to have!! lol
I'll drink to that!!
Still hanging in there--at least mostly. Did buy fabric to finish the setting triangles on my diamond log cabin star, but have fabric for the other borders and binding already. Next the search begins for fabrics to make the backing. Gotta love those pieced backings.
So great to see everyone doing so well. I sorted through my Fibber McGee closet to find a half begun quilt. Goodness..I need to sew many quilts before I even think of buying any more fabric. Just have been so busy this month with company that I have sewed about 15 minutes total in July. Hoping for a long winter. Everyone is doing so well with staying on the wagon...and birthday gifts don't count or having someone request a quilt as long as they buy the fabric. :-)Emma..I loved your poem!
Superior Threads posted a "Quilters Anonymous" parody video by 4 guys. I laughed out loud. It's worth checking out.
I will have to go to the LQS and pick up more FQs for the birthday swap but then they will go straight in the envelope to be mailed out. |
Oh my gosh I've been away from here for a while. Summer trips and all do take me away. I did good in July with no fabric bought which has been strange for me but I have found it to be somewhat liberating. Now comes a goodie .. my wonderful neighbor loves yard sales and she knows me and my love of fabric. I found a large garbage bag of fabric on my doorstep she had purchased for $10.00. She told me they wanted $20 but she talked them down to $10. I believe there's over 50 yards of quiltable stuff inside that bag. I did fall of the wagon early this month of August on a very cushy bag of fabric. $10 is a real deal on this one! And am I ever having a good time!
Failed just like my diet
Martina: Thanks for the link, specially loved the scrap of fabric in the guys beard. Rhonda: What a great neighbor! Love going through bags of fabric, better than Christmas morning. Calla: You can't get off with just a mea culpa, you have to share all the gory details.
Emma, I was lead astray by chocolate twinkies, followed by being wooed with Halloween oranges, in polka-dots, stripes, green cat eyes on black......not all on the same bolt mind you but several. I tumbled into the textile abyss..........
Calla: We have very long arms, just take a hand and climb right back on. I understand completely those beautiful fall colors are my gateway drugs.
Oh the love of fabric beckons us with colors of gold and rainbow too. We are among friends here. Each has a hand to help. Thank you all.
OK, Calla, you shared the gory details, and now I'm going to be derailed! Will you tell me about the green cat eye fabric? Like maybe the company that printed it? There's this friend....we have a joke going about eyes...so far I have two fabrics with eyes and one more would finish it off. She's retiring in four years, so I figure I can get it done by then. Sorry, Emma, this one was too good to pass up. And don't even ask about the 'Row by Row Experience.' My name is Carol and I'm a fabriholic...even peer pressure on here isn't enough to keep me from buying! (Glad fabric is my only addiction. Oh, and tea. Oh, yes, and chocolate.) Stopping here...getting tea. See all ya all later!

The fabric was purchased at JoAnn's.................let me know if I can help.......calla/Sue
Ops I guess in my frenzy I confused the cat eye fabric with the bat fabric So sorry Bats are green Cat eyes are cream .................I was delirious .........sorry |
another oops my fabric holder is holding the fabric upside down.............sheesh...........
We're like the Fabrics Anonymous club that brings fat quarters to trade during the break. Poor calla is so excited to show us her find that I think she gave up and went to take a nap.
Those "bats" work for me! Are they glow in the dark? Oh me, oh my! I will be quiet now. I will be quiet now. I will be....(probably).

I wasn't able to get back on line yesterday, was running errands with DIL. And in the evening a sewing pal was over, enjoyed strawberry shortcake and her visiting. So, I don't think the bats or the eyes glow in the dark didn't pay that much .............but some stippling with glow in the dark thread would add an interesting twist. Need a picture of your project ......
No pattern, yet, Calla. So far it's just collecting fabrics. The backing will be eye fabric and the front will be squares with sayings about chocolate. How to put those sayings into a cute pattern is a puzzle to me so far. The reitrement is four years, so I have time. Planning ahead is a good thing for me. :-)
I went to Joann yesterday and bought some iron-on interfacing and a new seam ripper (mine is dull) and THAT was it. I didn't even look in the direction of the fabric. You gals are having a good influence on me.
I am slowly doing repairs to a winter parka for a friend, who paid a seamstress shop way $20 to replace a broken zipper, and 3 weeks later, got it back with an uneven zipper. "While you have it, can you replace the drawstring at the waist?" I needed a 6" width of slick lining fabric yesterday, so I went to the only place in town, Hobby Lobby. While I'm standing at the cutting table waiting for my $.42 purchase to be cut, we're talking about the fabric moratorium, and the sales lady says "Well I won't tell you we just added a remnant section then."
Well you can guess where I ended up. I controlled myself though. There was a bolt of fabric that caught my eye as I'd walked toward the fabric section, black with all sorts of whimsy teapots on it. I found a 3/4 yard piece of it, 40% off. That's the only piece I bought, but I could have bought 10 other things. I had a coupon for 40% off any regularly priced item, which saved me $0.17 on the lining fabric, and walked out of there for $2.54. Definitely my cheapest trip to Hobby Lobby's fabric section ever. I stayed away from the holiday fabrics! |
DustysMomma, what strength in walking out of Hobby Lobby's fabric dept. Cheers!
