Irish: Since I am among friends,yess..ss..s...s! I really couldn't resist. Does it help that when I start something new I always shop from my stash?
|
Emma, you are very good! I can't wait to see pictures of this swirly quilt. My mind is conjuring all sorts of images, so need the reality. Maybe you could post pics of the fabric? I am staying off buying sites and deleting their e-mails unopened. Otherwise..........
|
Nancia: I sure will post pictures, it should be here in about a week. Just a question though, isn't showing favorite fabrics a little like having a fabrics anonymous meeting in a quilt shop?
|
Oh my gosh, I like it here. So understanding, so creative in quilting, so creative in purchasing. I'm waiting for my kit to arrive that was ordered before I joined fabrics anonymous....I'm so glad I'm among those whom have been there, done that and are still believers that I too, can quilt only (mostly) from my stash.

Oh, the wanting never ends! But I am learning a new philosophy-- there is another line of beautiful fabric coming out next week ( tomorrow,, later today, next month, doesn't matter when), and unless I have to use this today, right now, I can pass it by. I have bought fabric i had to have and it is still waiting to be used. But i do understand that there are fabrics i have collected that i probably will never ever cut into! Just like the teapots i had to have that I have never used.

Today, DH attempted to give me a 60% coupon for JoAnns - and I stayed strong and turned it down. Oh the regrets! But Nan, you are right. There is ALWAYS more fabric. And more coupons. Something will always be on sale, no need to buy something I don't need just because I have a coupon!

I was so weak. Almost got some fabric from #1 piecemaker today. man so close!
I wanted to share with you something I am working on in my medallion style quilt along (block of the month category). I have tons of scraps think I shared that picture of the stacks of less than f/4 this is a scrap to me btw.. nothing under 10".. so any how... I am using these up bit by bit. This week I tackled my reds. PUt a wonderful dent in them! I was so proud of myself. this is the good news. Now when I sit down take a break my dear mother in law calls.. she has put a huge box of her scraps together for me and has sent them out priority mail. OH .. thank you. OMG I will never kill my stash if everyone keeps adding to it. Not complaing, cost me nothing probably love a bunch of it but well there went knocking down my rainbow of scraps! she also found a box with a couple dozen zippers, a whole box of assorted rick rack and well some buttons but she has to mail them i another box to me. she has four boxes to send. OMG twice over. I um don't sew clothing. that is a lot of zippers. guess I can make those roses with them they make into broaches? sigh.. well here is my quilteroo loving how its comingout. next round kills the purples I think.. then blues then greens but have to check my rainbow to make sure :) |
ps there are 6 different red fabrics and one orange/red in the last round .. hard to see in this picture. I am glad to see things .. working. scrappy for me is almost impossible. I hate it every time. this is a last ditch effort to try it controlled. hoping I make it all the way without hitting my larger pieces of fabric. wish me luck!

Brat: Love your rainbow. That floral in the center just seems to glow.
|
Elisabrat: I have seen some very small quilts for Alzheimer's patients that have zippers on them. Otherwise, you could put zippers in tote bags or small makeup bags.
I love reading this thread because of the information and humor. Time to get moving this morning. I heard about a quilt show in a greenhouse that I plan to go to today in a nearby town. It will be my first time going to one. I do take the time usually to look at all of the quilts at our state fair which is a quilt show in it's own right. Connie |

but, no. I don't need any more zippers right now. I have plenty. |
So my official January Progress:
Expenses: Fabric: $0 (YAY!) Sewing Patterns: $24.61 Notions: $33.79 Embroidery Files: $13.50 Postage: $ 5.80 + (I lost a receipt somewhere...) Etsy Fees: $9.38 Total 87.08 Income: Etsy Sales: $5 Finished T-Shirt Quilt: $80 Total: $85 NOT TOO SHABBY! Honestly though, I'm excited with the progress. =) And I've finished 27 (TWENTY SEVEN!) projects in the month of January. A good month. On to February! |
Elisabrat, what a beautiful quilt.
|
Wow, 27 projects Jetnica, that is really good. I haven't finished one.
|
For me it as only been 13 days since I bought fabric. I purchased 6 fat quarters while I was at my monthly sew in. However, that was on January 17th and I didn't join this group until the 25th of January. So since I have joined I have not purchased any fabric.

Since my main 'project' for this year is to finish some of my UFO's (finish the quilting of my 'Bits and Pieces' sampler, quilt my 'Autumn Star', and complete my stil nameless medaillon quilt - for which I already have purchased the fabric), I should be complete to do this challenge too...
(I'm a hand-piecer, hand-quilter, so that will already take some time...) (center of my future medaillon-quilt) |

Grand job! 4) I need some ice tea anyone have any? THIRSTY central.. gosh dialysis you go they pull off about 4.5 kilos of fluid only to come home so parched you suck down a gulp cup in 20 seconds. I hold off as long as I can but I rarely win. |
You gals are rockin' it. Keep up the good work - you are definitely inspiring me. I should finish a small DP9 today. Only have a few more lines to serpentine quilt and then put the binding on.

jetnica do you sleep? ever? or are you sewing madly away at all hours of the day and night? wow! thanks for sharing!
|
Elisabrat, I also got a lot of zippers from my Mom's stash. I use them to make small bags, cutting the zippers to the size I need. Just yesterday I used a 22 inch zipper, cutting it to size. The price on the package was $.60. Guess I have had that around for awhile! Love having supplies on hand that I can use on scrap projects. Makes me feel like the project was "free".
|
I have fallen off the wagon but only because I needed something better for 'cat fur' than what I had bought that looked too much like chicken feathers. So I ordered some landscape fabric that looks like yellow grass and hoping it will do the trick. Otherwise, trying to use from stash...so far so good. Annta...that center star is gorgeous!
|
Well it looks like we are doing well.
It's now February and I have been fabric purchase free for December and January....except for the $2 for 2 fat quarters I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, those were for an upcoming project and were only $1 each! Coming up in February I have s class, I think have all the fabric, but thats 2 evenings in a quilt shop! I am also goingto a 3 day retreat in February, at the quilt shop! Eek, that's a lot of willpower. |
Oh my, my heart goes out to everyone. Such beautiful work. Such control over our passion to create from lovely fabric that beckons us.
|
Had a meeting with a client today with a view to working with them.....got myself a bit wound up over it and decided on the way home to do some de-stressing at the local CWA (Country Women's Association) Op shop. Resisted clothes, resisted shoes, resisted a really lovely crystal bowl....but almost 2 metres of shot cotton with an interesting striped panel at $1....nope...FAIL...it is forest green, it will go with the family room decor (we do need some more couch quilts and a table runner)...is that any justification AT ALL.
I am astounded by this groups output....all I have done this year is plodded on with piecing my GFG in the evenings and almost finished basting a string quilt I started last year. |
Earthwalker: Of course its a good reason! Just ask Nancia. You may be a confirmed quilter if you pass up shoes for another piece of cotton fabric.

1/12 of the way
I'm able to say I made it through January without buying any fabrics or notions! I'm just completing the binding on the BOM quilt from last year. The custom LAQ is done and it's gorgeous. I also finished the top for a baby quilt for a great nephew to come (more like a little boy quilt as it's quite large for a baby). He'll grow into it.
However, the cost of LAQ certainly exceeds my regular fabric buying costs. The baby quilt LAQ will be getting done in the coming week. I went to the BOM meeting this past Saturday and only paid for the fabrics for the project (FQ's for 3 mos). So, I'm staying on track and avoiding all other fabric shopping. I did make a resolution to not do any clothes shopping in 2014, but that didn't last more than 3 weeks. Oh well, I'm not perfect..... |
OOH, I might be in trouble. My girlfriend, who is a new-ish quilter w/o a stash, wants to go fabric shopping with me on President's day. One of the places she wants to go is a really nice LQS about 40 miles away that I only get to once a year or so. Huge selection. I'm trying to convince her to also shop at the equally lovely Paper Princess Stash (aka, Nancy's dining room). I guess I have a couple of weeks to get my will power up to full speed...

laynak,
I want to make 4 quilts for great grand kids. They are small yet but like single size I decided be the best. Get more use. I said I would not buy clothes in 2013 and I did not. But I buy material most of it right before Thanksgiving while out of town. I had said I would buy a couple pair of walking shoes which I did not find and I have little chance to shop. So this year I found two pair of walking shoes and bought them. $2 a pair and very good ones , I do not plan to buy clothes this year either. Pair of good snow boots if I find some. I do keep a list on clothes buying. You know I should do that on material. I do have all my tickets/receipts from last year. |
Went trough my stash today, convinced that I wouldn't find a fabric that could be used as binding for the sampler I'm quilting now (i.e. I went trough my stash, looking for a reason to go fabric-shopping).
But I did found something. I even think I found the perfect fabric for the binding of that quilt. I'm happy, and very eager to finish that sampler, but nevertheless a little bit annoyed I didn't found an excuse to buy some fabric... ;) |
I am noting a little wavering in our resolve, ah make that a lot of wavering. I have no room to talk since I already succumbed to temptation last month. If we aren't careful this is going to become a forum to brag about our latest purchase and don't forget garage sales are just around the corner. Now that I've issued the warning that I felt was needed I am going to settle down with the latest Joann's ad.
|
I am in. This is my first year and really need to use up some of my stash. I have been exploring as many scrappy patterns as possible so I can make several of them. Good luck everyone.
|
This is the first time I have seen this posting. I will try real hard too not purchase any fabric. I have not so far this year. Went to Joann's Saturday and did have some cut. The clerk charged me wrong for all the fabric, also charged me for one book twice and over charged me for some other things. I am glad I checked it in the parking lot because it didn't sound right. I took everything back and left.
|
SewSewGal: Good job on checking your receipt and deciding to not buy this time. Look at the money you still have! I've added up what I spent in January and it is $205. This is before I joined but after I made a commitment to curb my spending. Part of that was for batting. That is ok. Another purchase was for a Slidelock ruler. That too is kind of ok. A couple of books--not really ok and a quilt kit that should not really be ok at all. I have many books and patterns and magazines and gizmos and gadgets and a huge stash of wonderful fabric. I am very fortunate that I have what I do and I appreciate my stash and stuff. However, I honestly do not need more. The problem is the want...having said all that, I have not purchased anything in February!
|
I bought two yards of fabric. Yup. hanging head down.. BUT (always a but in there) it is for a medallion quilt in progress in memory of my mom. It is all her favorite flowers. So for this I do not feel bad at all. I need about 2 yrds of white on white fabric. anyone have a huge amount they would like to sell a bit? otherwise looking for the best lqs quality fabric at the lowest price.. its white on white shouldn't be THAT hard to find it. Here the white on whites are all 10.95 to 12.95 a yard. too steep for me. its for my quilt for quilters work that is Christmas and she wants a white feel to it.. so that means not using my greens or reds sitting lovely on my shelf. argh!
Emma you crack me up :) Sandy its ok for a special kitty quilt to buy fabric for it. feathered cats are not. unless you use it to have a bit coming out of his mouth :) Colorado quilter: love your resolutions. I go to our bargain box here for clothing. Its in my range under 3.00 and buy about 3 pieces a year period. They put all the winter coats in a free box outside. Got a great one, granted its purple but it keeps me warm. Shoes are every two years a pair from payless shoes. They cost me 25.00 but they are the only pair I wear. I salute you to keeping to your resolution. Now to try it with fabric.. a MUCH bigger challenge isn't it? |
Linda, I've had good luck with JoAnn's WOWs. Do you have a coupon?
|
Oh I bought fabric today. But...there's that word... I had my tax appt in a town about an hour away, home to one of my favorite LQS's. She sell paper bags--pretty big ones--with odds and ends of fabric for$9 each. I bought 2 bags of JMorton, JRothermel fabrics with over 4 yds in each. Largest piece 3/8 yd. Many F8th's and F16ths of like fabrics, plus odd and ends of coordinated fabrics. I would say $18 for over 8 yds of fabric is a deal! These fabrics are perfect to help finish off my mini quilts or put in a big quilt.
|
OK: What a deal, not even mentioning how much fun it would be to go through the sack. What a great idea for the LQ to clear leftovers.
|
I did not even look at the Jo-Ann sales flyer, even when DH pointed out that he could get me the 20% senior citizen discount. Of course I am going to the Ricky Tims seminar tomorrow and there will be vendors at the event. It's not that I plan to fall off the wagon but the odds are I will. Well someone has to boost the economy, right?
