I like those Mfay!

imanna - mine will probably be a bit wonky, but too many pieces for me to be willing to take out, so will work with borders and then some “creative” stretching, ironing (not pressing, seriously agressive ironing LOL), and borders that can be squared up.

If I do another one, I may do it using muslin that I can color with my inktense pencils instead of piecing!

imanna I only did mine 1 month at a time and mine needed some adjusting too. That will be my challenge this year to keep it in shape row by row

m-fay 01-23-2018 04:33 AM

Rob hope you do another, sounds interesting using the inks

costumegirl 02-18-2018 10:09 AM

Wow!!! These are all so creative!! I love how they have all turned out! The colors are so interesting and everyon has used their own techniques!!

rryder - Rob!! that is a stunning piece! Was it difficult sewing your rows together? Was there alot of stretching with the HST along the bias? How large are your individual squares and how large is your final piece?

MNT Grandma - Your colors are so vibrant!! I love how you have integrated these beautiful dyed colors with a few solids in a lovely EEP design! Please post more pictures! How large is your final quilt?

Immana - Your pieces are so colourful!! Great job!

m-fay - Looking good!! Waiting to see your results!!

Moonrise - Your colors and design are so interesting - please update on your progress!

Thanks, it was a pain sewing the column together. I am not the most precise of piecers so I designed this one with HSTs to make myself try to improve my piecing. I heavily starched the HSTs so there wasn't much stretching along the bias. The individual squares finished at 2 1/8 ". Right now it measures 69" x 51", but it still needs borders so I can add dating info etc.

Ok, here is my re-made precipitation quilt (Finally). My temperature quilts are done as well...just need to quilt and bind them.

This quilt represents precipitation levels for each day in 2017.
  • Each row represents a month.
  • White = no precipitation. Colors get darker based on higher levels of precipitation.

That looks great and I love the quilted raindrops!

The finished quilts and tops look very unique and creative. I really like the weather quilt. How large is your top?

I am in frog mode for this project. No forward progress. BHMQ is slowing me down. On last year’s, the purple BHMQ I decided to redo all of the yellow 3.5” blocks and redo them in 1/2 square blocks background and dark purple. So i’m 1/2 way done doing that. This year’s BHMQ I’m done with all the 3.5” and 2 by 10’ Sewn shashing. I just need to iron and start putting the 50 blocks together. I really like the design and colors of her blocks this year. I’m curious how it will look completely finished. I figure 2 for months for everything being done on these 2 projects?

Your precipitation quilt is beautiful Imanna. (and the raindrops) We dont get enough rainy days to make a precipitation one but I'm doing a temp quilt for this year too so I may look up the records and make a table runner precipitation one.

Love the finished results of your quilts! Love the quilted raindrops too!! Great work y'all!

Those are fabulous! I bet they look great when hung as a group with your precipitation quilt!

yes, I know this thread is from 2017 ;) but as best I can find it is the only one on the board about this type of quilt.
I'm at the planning stage for a temperature quilt. I know it will finish 40"X40"-ish, because I'm making new quilts for the loft rail above our living room. (image below, ..they are double sided and all made of leftovers and I'm tired of looking at both sides!

I've gathered temperatures from my birth year, and now gathering from our marriage year for bookend quilts. I think with 20 fat quarters of gradient/ombre fabric I can get two small quilts if I change my key around for the second one. Hope so because the line is discontinued but the fabric is beautiful! I think I've come up with how to get 365 blocks in the given space. 30 wide, 12 long.

Oh Sharyn I like the idea of the birth/marriage bookend quilts! What pattern are you going to use?

I went to the Mt Hood Quilt Guild show "Quilts of the East Wind" back in October. They had a whole display of temperature quilts. The variety and creativity of patterns was amazing.

KalamaQuilts 05-06-2023 04:51 AM

oh, I would have loved to have seen that. Thank you for sharing the image.
There was just one at the Longview show, but fun to look at.
My plan right now is improv like Elm Street Quilts https://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2022...lt-flimsy.html
Her blocks are 1"x2" I think, mine, to fit the size I want will be 1.3"X3.5" finished on this first one. I've been practicing adding the insert and putting the block back together straight using scrap fabric. Not easy. I'd rather not make big and cut down because my fabric is limited. I think the key is a tiny nip off the pointy end of the piece I'm adding back on, but like tumblers, it seems just right is infinitestable.

I 'think' for the wedding year I'll do a folded corner technique. Less thinking :)

Would love to see progress on anyone else's temperature quilt!

this is my color layout for my birth year temperatures. I had to change the size configuration of the units to have enough, but I'm just not a go buy more person.
I'm excited, or I will be when I get over my brain's flat tire. It only took me two days of figuring to get to this point...

Peckish 05-07-2023 10:20 AM

Oooo such pretty colors! Can't wait to see what the ombre effect is!

KalamaQuilts 05-09-2023 06:55 AM

I started cutting yesterday, this is so fun!

Everything is cut, and I've made my first week ;) These asymmetrical strips are a booger, but it will be interesting to look at :)
We had zero lows higher than 60 that year. It is a wonder our gardens grew on the harbor.

first two weeks, I'm getting better at the insert, knock on wood. each day will finish at 1.5" X 3"

osewme 05-13-2023 08:57 AM

Oh, I absolutely love the beginnings of this quilt. The little "stars" in the fabric give it a lot of pizazz and the insert strip for the low temperatures is really nice. I'll be watching this as it goes along because some day I'd like to make one. Will you be putting in a thin sashing to separate the months?

KalamaQuilts 05-13-2023 11:30 AM

no, I'm restricted by the size of the space I wish to hang it. I'm still thinking as I'm going along too... I was born on Oct 28, and looking at that first row, I'm thinking of starting the quilt on the 28th day rather than the 1st as it is now, and moving the early part of october to the bottom of the quilt.
I was going to do one for our marriage year too, but it will be a bookend quilt to this one on the loft rail, so size again plays a part. I want to use hearts for the high temperatures, and the background for the lows, but to make a heart visible I need bigger blocks, so I'm just going to make one for the month rather than 12 months. Maybe set the blocks on point just to complicate my life :)

Peckish 05-13-2023 02:12 PM

Oh wow, it's beautiful Sharyn!!

starting on my 7th month, October - March finished.
Dirt was new when I started quilting, and I've Never made a quilt with a line of fabric before. I now understand why people do, each and every block I add I say ooOoooo, pretty! Because the colors all look good together. I know I'll never become a (eeu...quilt police words, but) matchy-matchy quilter, I'm way too fond of pulling 8 oranges or 15 reds out of my stash. But...oooOooo pretty!

osewme 05-17-2023 06:34 PM

Absolutely amazing. I love the "sparkle" to it with the little starlets.

KalamaQuilts 05-18-2023 06:48 AM

appropriate to my birth year quilt, I'm a believer that I came from stardust and will return to stardust.

I love the fabric you chose for your project! I've been playing with a design in Excel. I went back to my birth year, 1960, and started recording highs and lows for my birthdate each year! I wanted to make it personal to me. work in progress. Input welcome. Ignore info typed in cells, and look at colors for each row/year. Day's High is main color , and Low is the 2 squares. Possible dividing strip every decade? It would have to be 1" strips.

fun idea, that day each year. Might be a bit of a monotone unless you've lived lots of different places. I've seen a number with divider strips. Also many that include something like cloud cover/rain/snow/etc.
I want to make another but not the whole year, I've decided on the full month we got married, such a pretty month in the PNW. and much larger blocks ;) I'm kicking around the idea of recycled men's shirts for the highs and something girly for the lows, since it won't take nearly as much fabric and not a wide range of shades.

I've finished assembling my birth year except for the title row. More complicated than just one year in progress :) I'm going to do it in pen work since I don't have an embroidery machine, and spent some time the last two days playing around with fonts to fit the space. Fun! A friend said I needed to scratch out the info because someone could steal my identity. Who'd want to be as old as me but I suppose it is common sense.

Peckish 06-01-2023 05:00 PM

It's so pretty, Sharyn!!
At first I thought the circles were maybe to document the full moon. Then I realized they were probably row markers. 😆

KalamaQuilts 06-02-2023 04:41 AM

Rather than start each row on the 1st, I took it apart and restarted with my birthdate, so the dots are the months, but I haven't decided how to mark them. Buttons maybe but I sold all my gallons last year, so I'm just thinking. But I thought maybe start the quilting with curving parallel rows to empathize that row of blocks.

Not worrying about month rows also gave me the opportunity to make the rows even :)

I started our anniversary month one yesterday. Wildly different from this one. I thought it would be easier, but I also want on point and 40"-ish square. My brain is fried.
