Moonrise: Very creative idea!
Grinch: I thought about doing EPP as well but I already have 2 EPP projects going so decided that was enough. Enjoy the process! Here's my Jan 1st HST. Stayed in the 30s all day so two teal fabrics. It was fun perusing my 2" and 2.5" square stash for the right fabrics. Since I am trying to use up scraps - I am not allowing myself to cut any new fabric for this quilt. Unless of course I run out of a color, which I seriously doubt will happen. |
Dilemma, My thermometer is sitting between 29 and 30. Snow dyeing does not allow for purple(my 20s) and Yellow(my 30s) to be nearby. So this patch is going to be Purple with a yellowish green...wish I had an easy way to post pictures. That only works on my husbands computer, and he isn't ready for another 365 anything. Just finished the Australian one. So glad this is one patch, not one square!!

Love this idea. Perfect for me as I get back into quilting. I went out and got some fabric today. I will probably need more in the red family. I think it is going to be a red quilt. I'm going to do 2X5 pieces split with the top the high and the bottom the low. I'm not getting fancy since I'm just getting back into quilting.
|
I've been thinking about something like this (my original idea was to do my work schedule, which is pretty crazy so would make an interesting-ish quilt).
I like the idea of a temperature quilt though. I might do a log-cabin quilt, but it would be one huge log cabin block. I think it would end at about 91x91" if I did 1" wide strips (or would that require 1/2"... too tired to do math right now)? The center square would be January 1, but for high/low temps would either be two rectangles or a hst. I don't know, I might have to map it out to see if I would like it. We get from the single digits (I don't think I've seen negative numbers for a few years) to well over 100. I think I'd switch to flames at > 115, rather than just a color... |
Can no longer edit my upper post, but I think I figured out it would be 1" finished strips (so strips cut 1 1/2" wide).
|
This is a neat idea. I am saving it for later.
However, what really grabbed me was your temperature range. Sounds good to me. Wonder if I could get my crew to move west. ?!?!? |
Imanna, I love your first square!
I am still planning in my head, but I am starting with half hexagons (high and low temps) and sewing them together to represent each day. I haven't decided how I will put them together yet. I am excited about this project. I will hopefully learn a new technique and also use up some scraps. I don't plan to purchase any fabric for this quilt - we will see how that goes. |
I decided I will do two half square triangle blocks per day. Each one will have a black triangle and the other triangle will represent the temps for the day. I'm planning on a high column and a low column for each month, so my quilt will be 24 columns across and 31 rows with 2.25" finished squares, so it should finish up at around 54" x 69" or so. Months with less than 31 days will be extended with HSTs that use white in place of a color.
Will be shopping my stash of very pale batiks for the colored portions of the squares. Rob |
Jan 2nd HST done and sewed to my Jan 1st HST. This one is Teal and Purple. Looking at the forecast for the next week or so I might need to add another temp range (< 20 degrees). YIKES. We didn't get below 20 degrees at all last year. If it does happen I think I'll use black. But then I cannot use black for the sashing in between my months. Decisions, decisions.
|
Earlier today i read this thread and then went about other things but in the back of my mind I kept thinking about this idea. Finally came back here and decided to give it a go. I don't know just how to make my blocks and layout but I'm in. Now off to do more thinking.

Learning a little humility here. Would like the thermometer to go into the 40s today..for the design. Nope. Have to follow my own rules.
|
Still waiting on my orders of the rain/snow/clouds/sunshine fabrics to arrive, then I can start. I've been writing down the temps and weather from Weather Underground so I'll have it. Fabric should be here by the weekend. Hurry up, mail lady! :)
|
OH, that sounds like fun! Weather fabric! I am still dithering about what colors to use. I have a terrific layer cake but I doubt it would have enough mid'lin colors. I am keeping track of my temps too. Today, Low of 16, High of 18! Big variation scheduled for tomorrow, 10 and 13. Oh well, it will get more interesting as the seasons pass.

I did some of my growing up in Wisconsin. I remember not being able to breath except with a scarf over my mouth. Had major bronchitis problems..so family moved to California. We got 20 inches of snow yesterday here at 4,000 ft. But still the temperature stayed in the 30s. And rained all today. I like snow..maybe because it doesn't last long with our version of global warming.
|
I'm still pondering doing this quilt. I think I will, and the 2.5" candies I have in every color of the rainbow should do the trick. Not sure of the layout, though. Postage stamp with a "dividing strip" of a certain length between months? or no division, as the days do all seem to run together in real life.
|
This sounds like fun. Can I see pictures of anyone who has finished the first few days in January? I'm still trying to figure out how this will look. Will you use all the same fabric for say temperatures between 31-35 deg., (light purples),
same fabric for temps between 36-40 deg. (dark blue). In other words, will all temps in the degree ranges be of the same fabric (example: If Jan. 2 temps were 36-40 deg. & then Jan 28 temps were 36-40 deg., would you use the same fabric for each of those days?) It's just hard for me to visualize how it would look without looking chaotic scrappy. Sorry. |
Imanna I do the same thing with crochet. Love the temperature idea in quilting.

Here's mine so far (Jan 1-4). I think I'm actually going to make two quilts ... a throw and a queen size quilt. These will be for the throw (high/low temperatures only), and they're made with 2-1/2" squares. :)
The first two days of January didn't have much variation in the temperature, but it's supposed to be colder over the next few days, then warm back up, so hopefully I can play with more colors. :D The center is the high temp for the day, and the corners are the low. :) |
I think I am going to do mine with flying geese blocks. Still thinking.
|
this is a great New idea. one i never heard of before, and very novel.I hope
to see next year about this time, finished quilts. I have no where to put a quilt like this, but am really looking forward to everyone's progress.here would be a great place to show your monthly progress. |
moonrise, i love your creative way of expressing your temperatures in your area.

Have to leave home today...can I trust husband to get the high temperature for me?

I re-did my first squares. After doing more calculating, I saw that the first ones were way too big for a throw. I decided to go with a vertical layout. No more mind-changing! LOL! Here's a new pic. Most of my weather fabric arrived today, so I'll be starting on the blocks for my queen-size quilt shortly. Woo hoo!

Both the throw set (high/low temps) and the queen set (high/low temps and weather). :)

Here are my first 4 days. Nothing too exciting yet. Top triangle = high temp and bottom triangle = low temp. Teal = 30 degree range and purple = 40 degree range. |
Looks great! :)

Thanks for those sharing pictures! I am still working on getting my stuff together. I hope to do it next week. I keep planning how I am going to do it and not actually doing anything. This week and next are two of my busy weeks at work; I am hoping it will settle down after that.
They are predicting snow here this weekend (not common here). Schools have already announced early release for tomorrow. It will be fun to track the temperatures. |
I made a choice last night. I have a jelly roll of batiks from soft pink, nearly white, with just the slightest touch of lavender to a purple on such dark blue that it is nearly black. Guess that should give me plenty of choices for my Michigan weather. My plan is a simple side by side grid for each month, high/low. I seldom make anything that is simply modern geometric. I am going to play with my calculator a bit to figure out how big this will end up. I want to keep it moderately small, so I can hang it in my bathroom or maybe in my hall or then perhaps in my bedroom. Oh, well, I will let my creative fairy lead me through my forest of possibilities.
Love the examples I have seen so far. Keep them coming. They are ..... inspirational. |
I really like the precipitation band added. I need to do some more snow dyeing as I started with a 4 inch hexy that is wanting to fussy cut. My bolt of ready to dye white is too dense for hand quilting (my favorite) and I'm glad it is only one patch a day to hand sew in. Maybe I can use it all up on this project. Will try to post a picture when the second round begins.

To add a picture... Opps...that is the 365 from 2016.
This is the first 7 days of the Temperature 2017. It starts with the pinned patch and goes counter clockwise. The next row starts with the smaller turquoise solid block and will also go counter clockwise. So far have used the yellow for 30, blue-green for 40. The strange purple yellow was for the day the dial was stuck between 20 and thirty. The rows will alternate between snow dyed and solids. |
I love the idea of weather fabric ........is a nice touch.

I have five days done. My struggle is that I keep changing my mind on what to do. I need to come up with a plan and stick with it. The one plan I have stuck with is to use only material I already have.

You ladies have tempted me into figuring out a small block, a block layout, and a final quilt layout for IF I were going to do this ................................. no, I must resist, still have hundreds of small mystery quilt units to make and assemble!!!!! But such a waste of time if I don't make it ............................ no, you have the upcoming Boom swap blocks to make. But it would be such a unique way to use up some scraps ............................. no you have a whole bin of blocks that need to be made into quilts. (I hope you guys read that in the voices of Smegal and Gollum)
|
I spent most of yesterday rethinking the colors for temps after I discovered that I didn't have any light violets or light purples in my stash. Then I cut out colored triangles for the high and low for Jan.1-7 and stitched each to a black triangle, so I now have 14 squares done.

Well, I sure like this idea for a quilt but I'm still on the fence and haven't decided if I want to make one. How will you who are making this quilt tell the year of the temperatures? (on a back label....somewhere on the front...?)
