I'm tracking mine in Excel although it has not been necessary yet. So far I have been working on mine every day but I don't expect that will continue for the entire year. I will admit it does feel good to get into the sewing room for 10-15 minutes every day for just a tiny bit of "me" time. My DH has been interested in the process. It is supposed to hit 50 tomorrow and this morning he was asking me if that meant a new color in my quilt. It does ! :)

I'm using something called "Past weather in Richmond, Va" it's on a web page labelled "timeanddate.com". I found it using Google search. It's a little bit of a pain to use so I may switch over to NOAA as suggested by Rogue quilter.
For keeping track--I set up a notebook. Since I went ahead and pulled all the fabrics I will be using from my stash, I set up the first page as a key, with a description of the colors and all the fabrics that I am using for each temperature range. Then I noted a general description of the quilt (HSTs) and a chart of the general layout. The 2nd page is for January- I've noted the high and low for each day and what color I'm using. Will try to get time to post pics tomorrow. Rob |

All caught up. :)

At first I was looking up the previous day's weather each morning and noting it on a calendar. Then I discovered that on weather.com there is a "Monthly" bar that when clicked on shows all previous readings for that month so far. So you could wait till the end of the week or month to jot them down. ;-)

Here's how I'm keeping up with the temps and weather ... just a simple chart in a notebook. :) I look on Weather Underground, and write down the forecast 2 or 3 days in advance, then adjust it to the actual temps for each day if the forecast turns out to be off a smidge. The check marks indicate that I've made both blocks for that day (I'm making 2 quilts).

I'm just looking at my own thermometer on the back of the house. If I will not be home during the warmest part, I delegate to my husband who I think is making it up. We are in the mountains where every area experiences slightly different weather. Will try to post tomorrow.

That's going to be a beautiful scrappy quilt, Moonrise!

Here are pics of my notebook:
On the last pic, if there is a note in parenthesis beside the temp then that means that I have made the square for that temp. As you can see, I'm a couple days behind. Rob |

Here are the fabrics I chose (all from stash!). The first pic shows temp ranges 0-9 degrees the dark purple that's laying on top of the blue with green and yellow dots (10-19 degrees) across to the greens which are the 50's. 2nd row shows 60's across to over 100 (the blotchy maroon/red on the far right). I've got several versions of the colors in each temp range to add variety.
The 2nd pic shows some of the HST's I've made so far. Still haven't decided what kind of patterns I want the blacks and colors to make by rotating the individual blocks. They will be laid out in columns as shows, with H's on left and L's on right for each month. Rob |

May have been in the 50s yesterday and the day before...but today is definitely in the 30s. Thinking a calendar in the round is a challenge.

Oh Wow, Mnt Grandma! Looking great!
|
Nice job, everyone! I love seeing everyone's progress photos. Keep them coming
Mnt Grandma: Really cannot wait to see how your design progresses. I love it. |
A word of caution or advice, try to only use one website to as a reference to father your information. I've now run into two different highs and lows in my city. I'm sticking with weather.com from now on exclusively.

That is pretty cool idea.

Here is mine. It is simplistic but I am going to have strips of gray between each month. The dark purple is > 81 and the orange is 76-81 and the others in between. Each has 5 degrees in the range up to 80. Above that my colors are in 3 deg increments (since that is where we are most of the year and range from 82 (dk orange), through pink, red and maroon) up to the maroon which is >101
Here is mine |
I'm collecting my temps -- need to figure out the colors. Hope I can stick with it.

Momocarly, Pretty fabrics.

How're we doing team?
|
Needed some snow dyed true red, blue and more yellow. The weekend storm really cooperated.
I have a stiff neck and iffy back, but still made three sled runs with the Grandkids. We haven't had snow for them to visit in 3 or 4 years. I feel much younger today |
I'll get caught up on mine ASAP. Sick with the crud. :(
|
I hope you feel better soon, Moonrise.
I've still not decided what kind of overall pattern I want my HSTs to make. I need to do that before I can start sewing them to each other. |
How's everyone's weather? We are going to be at 80 degrees by Friday...smh
|
We're having a cold snap at the moment. Not sure how long it's supposed to last. I have promised myself that today I will decide how I want to lay out the HSTs and begin sewing them together so I can keep up with this challenge!
|
Today is suppose to be 59, still have 6 inches of snow. Do you find yourselves cheering on the thermometer to get to the next color? If we get to 60 it will be my first blue patch.
|
Weather today: cloudy, snow flurries, and 26 degrees at 8:30PM. I am finished teaching for the evening and ready to slide on home to my kitty and a cup of cocoa!

Finally got caught up. I went ahead and did tomorrow's, too, based on the forecast, so that takes care of January. Here are pics of most of the blocks for both the queen-size and the throw-sized quilts. They're sewn together vertically, but I had to take pics in increments, otherwise the picture would've been 14 miles long. ha ha :)

Those are beautiful, Moonrise. I really like the effect that your precipitation strip has.

The more we add the more interesting the look.
|
Rob, did you decide what your layout will be?
I love those weather fabrics! |
Hey Neuras. I'm still on the fence, though I'm leaning toward a large diamond shape.
Rob |
Those progress photos are looking AWESOME! So excited to be starting on a new month! My husband made me laugh last night: "Oh, it's finally beginning to look like something" He's lucky I love him :-)

One third the way around the third circular row. The yellow oranges are the four days it got up to 50. Is there such a thing as a circular row?
|
Moonrise, I love what you have done!! Neat effects.
|
Wow, MntGrandma! That is so impressive!!!!!
|
Thank you, Grinch. It looks like I'm going to be in the blue green 40s for the next week. Luckily they have lots of different looks in the snow dye.
|
I finally decided on my layout. I don't know what it's called, but it's a common HST layout where the overall effect is sort of like a bullseye.
Rob |
And I changed my mind once again. Luckily only have to redo January and a few days of February.
I'm making 3 small-ish wall size quilts: 1) Daily Highs, 2) Daily Lows, 3) Daily Precipitation. For my precipitation quilt I am using solids and the same solid color for each day within each defined precipitation range. My Plan C for the daily temperature quilts was to use all scrappy fabrics - in fact I was even going for no duplicates. I love the precipitation quilt because it tells the story of the precipitation change very well. Something was bugging me about the temperature quilts and I finally decided it is the scrappiness. I'm too busy looking at all of the different fabrics to "see" the colors therefore the story of the temperature change is being lost. So...Plan D: hunt through stash for solids that I can use for the temperature quilts and re-do them. |
I wonder what it will look like? Do I pinterest bullseye hst layout? I'd love to see it!
