It's looking good, MNT GRANDMA. What size is it now?

MNT GRANDMA 03-15-2017 03:41 PM

30 inches in diameter. Next round will add 7 inches, cause I like to cut bigger pieces out of the snow dyed fabrics.

rryder 03-16-2017 03:13 AM

That's really pretty Mnt. Grandma!

Where did you find the sunny fabric? Actually, where did everyone find their fabrics? Please advise

I found the sunny fabric at my LQS. It's actually a daisies print, but works well for sun. I found the rain and snow on eBay.

rryder 03-25-2017 03:54 AM

Mine are all batiks I pulled from stash.

gramajo 03-25-2017 05:59 AM

Now that I'm almost finished with March, I'm having second thoughts. If I were to do it over, I'd still have 5 degree increments, but only use a light and a dark for each 10 degrees. That way, just glancing at it, I'd know blues were 20s, greens 30s, etc. I'd be more scrappy for each color. I'm also thinking of changing the white part of each month to black so the colors will pop more. I'll keep the white sashing for each month.

gramajo 03-25-2017 06:02 AM

rrryder: Batiks will make it bright and colorful. Please show us a picture.

I haven't had a chance to work on mine in a few weeks, but I'm writing down each day's temps & weather so I can work on it when I get time. We're getting the house ready to put on the market, and we've been doing a lot of "pre-packing" and putting our extra stuff into a storage unit. We've lived here for 25 years, so there's a Lot of Stuff. We've even donated 1-1/2 truckloads (literally!) of unwanted stuff already. It's unbelievable how things accumulate over the years.

MNT GRANDMA 03-25-2017 08:49 AM

We are on the older side, giggle, living on five country acres off-grid. And when I look at our big two story house I think about my poor son and his wife having to clean it and the property out for our next big move. Or if they mutiny, doing it ourselves! We actually moved our indoor lives (computing, and sewing) downstairs into the living room to accommodate dog friends who could not do the stairs. So upstairs is mostly storage, except for furry cats (without them...I wouldn't need to vacuum much up there). My husband, who still does all our firewood, said something about 5 more years. These are hard decisions to make, and need to be done sooner that later. Thank you for listening.
Another week of freezing to 70 degree temperatures. So glad I'm not a weatherperson.

m-fay 03-25-2017 04:56 PM

I have caught up! just this last week of march to do. and I am "quilting as I go" so I will post a pic in April. It looks so bright & hot! I am doing it 3 months across and 4 down. and each mouth has 5 rows. the empty space in the 5th row, i have the average temp (max & Min) for that month, and on the back I have my colour chart and the temps for that colour.

Deecee 03-25-2017 09:44 PM

I'm very intrigued with this idea but am still finishing my 365 so don't want to start a big project, but will definitely follow along to watch.

M-fay I'm in Victoria so will be very interested to see your temperature range and colour scheme for WA.

WMUTeach 03-26-2017 05:38 AM

I have been keeping records of Highs and Lows. Choose a batik jelly roll and divided the colors and temps in 5 degree increments. I put each color in its own baggie with a sticky note indicating the temp. Then the process just sat on my sewing table. Well, yesterday I started on January and I like the results. I chose a super simple 2.5 cut for low and high, sew together. Then stack with day one on the bottom and move to the top. I think I will divide with narrow black strips. No photo yet. I will post when I get a couple of months ready for viewing.

pinkflowers 03-26-2017 09:13 AM

Hi everyone! I just noticed this post and am thinking about putting the project on my "To Do" list". I said to my DH this morning, "Your wife is crazy'" He just smiles, like he already knows this. Well, I tell him about the Temperature Quilt project and that I'd like to do it. (that is, add it to the many other on-going projects I am "in the middle of, but not quite done yet"). Anyway, DH thinks it would be a fun project, and he had a few ideas about how to do it.
So, I may be joining you. I already went to the weather underground and have my temps to date. For the moment, I may just follow your postings and dream a little.

m-fay 03-26-2017 05:09 PM

Deecee , My days are certainly warmer than yours, at the moment at least. but the cold is creeping in at night time.days are still beautiful and great to be out gardening.

MNT GRANDMA 03-27-2017 09:32 AM

Sometimes I think I am the only quilter who doesn't garden. I do spend two days a week at our all donation/volunteer library cultivating that collection. In three years we have grown to 10,000 items, and 670 borrowers. Patrons are good at bringing flowers for the desk, and offering homegrown remedies when I'm ill (let's not talk about the remedies...this is Northern California. I skipped being a hippie the first time..now I'm not brave enough to try new things.)

playswithcolor 03-27-2017 04:26 PM

I just discovered this thread. The idea sounds crazy fun. I may start midyear and keep going to finish a year. Are those who are making HSTs using the color for the daily low and high temp in each HST? If you are using squares are you using just the high temp?
I need to get 4 quilts quilted and bound for our show in June, so I may not get to thi right away.

happylab 03-27-2017 05:53 PM

Plays, I plan to do two rolls, the top roll high temps, bottom row low temps for each month. 1will start with the 1st to the 31st. I will have 2 1/2" squares. In months without a date, I will place a gray square. In between each month will be a 2 1/2'" strip of black. (Not 100% sure of the black strips, still debating). I figure it will be about 62" by 72" without borders. So far I have my temperature color guide and have picked out 23 pieces fabric (from stash). This next week I will cut out all my squares and start sewing. I have the data of temps for Jan and Feb. at the end of this week I will copy the March date and start sewing, to catch up. In my mind it looks neat, I'll wait and see at the end of the year.

MNT GRANDMA 03-27-2017 05:55 PM

Hi Plays with color, Just scroll backwards to see what folk have been doing...I wish I had stayed with solids, and maybe an understandable relationship of color to temperature...well and maybe a more reasonable arrangement. But I am having fun!

rryder 03-28-2017 02:32 PM

Hi Plays with Color, I'm doing half square triangles with a colored triangle to denote temp and a black triangle to make it square. Two columns for each month, 1 for high temp and 1 for low temp. If I do it again, I'll be more careful picking colors for the temps, the ones I chose don't seem to be making as clear a statement on the temp. variations as I'd like. but it's giving me lots of practice with HSTs :D

Nice progress, everyone. Here's mine. They are plain and simple but I think they serve my intended purpose - tell the story of the precipitation levels and temperature changes.

1) Precipitation Quilt (Whites and Blues. White = no precipitation. Light to dark blue based on increased precipitation levels). I plan on embroidering snowflakes on the days that it snowed.
2) High Temps (Love that Yellow Square = 60 degrees!!)
3) Low Temps

WOW !!! Amazing job. Congrats on a great finish.

m-fay 04-02-2017 08:42 PM

I agree with imanna Wow! What a huge great quilt. You must be so proud of it... Great job.mnt grandma like your precipitation panel as well as the temps . I don't have enough rainy days to include them on mine.

MNT GRANDMA 04-07-2017 08:19 AM

Tomorrow they are predicting 4 inches of snow. Hope I can get enough to dye some blue fabric..then I'm set for the year.

here's Jan. - March done

Hey all, here's my progress so far Jan. through March from left to right. There are 2 columns for each month, the first column is the high temps and the second column is the lows. I think next time (if I do another one) I won't do half square triangles, or perhaps will be more careful in picking out colors for the temp. ranges. I like what I've got and am getting a lot of practice on accurately piecing HSTs, but I don't think it really tells the story of the temps.

Rob

m-fay 04-08-2017 04:15 PM

I like the way you have it laid out, keeping the lows separate from the highs. Its looking good

Grinch 04-08-2017 05:31 PM

Wow, MntGrandma!!

Grinch 04-08-2017 05:32 PM

All those little pieces and triangles to boot!! Great work, GramaJo!!

Rob, that is great! I am so impressed!

I will say all these pictures are making me a little jealous. I dropped the temperature quilt because it was stressing me out, and quilting should not be stressful. But I love looking at the pictures and progress!

It took me years to learn to use black...it makes things pop so beautifully. My snow didn't stick yesterday..so no dyeing.

can you use crushed ice instead? I'm thinking a bag of ice and a hammer kind of thing....
