I need to dye the blue for 90 degrees....crushed ice would be fun to work with when it gets that hot. Good idea.
|
I know how to dye with rocks etc but how on earth do you use snow?
|
There are detailed instructions on the internet. Basically prepare the fabric to accept the dye. Suspend some sort of screen over a container. Squish up the fabric, put on top of screen. Cover with as much snow as you can (tuck in any fabric peeking out) Using a powered dye(I use Procion Mx) sprinkle over the snow. I started with just navy blue, red, and yellow. The navy was always on the purple side. Which is why I need to try another blue dye. The most interesting results happened when I sprinkled one color and then came back randomly with another. Then you have to wait till the snow melts to see what happened. Then rinse and set the color.
|
That sounds like fun.we don't get snow but the crushed ice sounds ok
|
I knew we had a wet winter, but they just announced the snow pack in the Sierra's is bigger than the last four winters combined. Flood warnings are out for when it starts melting. California weather is a mess; drought to floods with nothing in between. We are trying to salvage our 18 foot travel trailer. Even though Paul resealed the roof last summer, we got lots of water damage...not to mention the mice. I am washing everything I can move out of the trailer, but where to put it if we declare the trailer totaled. A replacement really isn't in the budget. Thank you for listening.
|
Mntn grandma-- sorry to hear about your travel trailer-- I hope it works out. Be safe, flooding sounds scary with that much snow pack.
Rob |
so sorry about your trailer. MNT, I hope it's not as bad as you think and you can still use it
|
Thanks for the encouragement. Paul is looking into putting on new roofing. Found mouse sign all over the kitchen in the house today, guess they moved there after I chased them out of the trailer. I am thinking of restricting the two cats catfood, and see if they go to work.

April all done

Very pretty, m-Fay. I'll be working on mine later.
|
Nice, m-fay...
I have to bring my sewing machine down for its annual check up so unfortunately will not be able to finish up my April row or add it to the Jan-March section for another 7-10 days <Sigh>. Really excited though because April brought more "yellow" days (60 degree days). Weather man is saying maybe 70 degrees tomorrow and/or Thursday - that would introduce Orange into my quilt and make me happy!!!! |
M-Fay, I'm still thinking sherbert when I see your fabrics.
We just got two days in the 80's so can use my yellow greens. It has to stop going up as my fabric is not done for the 90's yet. |
I'm liking that a lot, M-Fay!
Imanna- sorry to hear about your sewing machine, hope it has a speedy check-up! rob |
How's everyone coming on their temp. quilts? I just realized that I have managed to go for nearly 2 weeks without writing down the high and low temps (blame it on spring gardening time). Since it's so hot here today (mid 90s) I'm going to remedy that oversight right now.
Rob |
I've been good about getting temps. The 1st thing I do in the a.m. is go to weather.com to check for previous day's temps and precipitation. I pull the precut fabrics and put them on the design wall. If I have white thread on machine and in bobbin, I sew a couple of days together. I've been using black lately, so have a few days to put together. I know myself and if I don't keep reasonably caught up, it'll never get done.
|
I write my temp in the evening, and seem to be waiting a week before cutting. It sounds silly, but since I'm English paper piecing with freezer paper, I have to use an iron. I hate turning it on for a short time.
|
Mnt Grandma- I know what you mean. Since I'm doing half square triangles I'm trying to be super careful about the seams and that means using the same thread (aurifil) and needle (75/11) for consistency. Which means I need to change needle and thread in my machine, so I find myself waiting until I've got a bunch of them to do before I stitch them together.

Oh Boy? Our first temperature over 90.

When I first started reading this thread I didn't think I would like this type of quilt but the more I read and the more pictures I saw I became intrigued! I think this is an idea I'm going to work on. You are all so creative and inspire me so much. Like the band for the weather also!

Love your design Mnt Grandma - so creative!!!
Attached are my temperature quilts (Highs on the top,m Lows on the bottom). I think this is the 5th time I've remade them. I am finally happy with them. Happy enough that I can stop questioning whether I can make them better. I think/hope. Waiting for the last color to show up for temps above 90 degrees. Putting my precipitation quilt on hold for now although I am still recording the daily precipitation levels. I have remade that one 3 times and am still not at all happy yet with my fabric choices. It should not be this hard to find 5 blue batiks that I love that progress from light blue to dark blue. SIGH. Please post photos of your progress. |
Imanna, I really like how yours is flowing. I would be tempted to applique a small symbol in the larger areas, a garden hoe, or snow shovel, or???

MNT Grandma it is looking so beautiful. I manna I like how you have kept your highs & lows separate. I reckon I'll try a different style next year. This is mine so far...very bright!

M-Fay, You are getting into cooler weather I hope?
|
M-Fay- Looking good, I like the way you've done the empty spots in the calendar.
I finally got May put together and attached to April and am caught up on June. Will post a pic later today after getting home from barn. Rob |

Another row of snow dyed on. Now back to smaller solid pieces. Approximately 36" across.

We hit our first day in the 90s yesterday - this will introduce my final color to the quilt. Now that I have the last color on the quilt - I'd be happy to not have any more days in the 90s :)

Finally got May and June done and on the quilt. As you can see from the deep red/orange we've had several days in the 90's so far this year the lighter oranges are 80's.
Rob |
The black makes it all so crisp.
|
The year is now half over....everyone's quilts are looking great!

Mine through June....LOVE my one and only pink square (> 90 degrees)
|
Imanna, I reckon next year, Ill do mine like yours. Mntgrandma, love yours, how do you plan it? and rryder, love the black in it so you can see the defined colours.
|
After each round is done, I trace around 1/6 of it with chalk on the back of my green cutting mat. Then I play with my rulers that do hexagon angles till I get something I like. The next part it hard because back in row 4 or 5, I made an 1/8 of an inch mistake and I am paying for that more each round. So some of the templates now have right and left issues. Hopefully it won't be too visible once it is quilted.
|
mnt you really are talented. It looks so beautiful but you must have a lot of patience!
|
MNT, I really like your top. I'm still confused on your pattern, but it is lovely. Please don't try to unconfused me. I like being that way. LOL
Rob, your top is so pretty, I just love the way it is turning out. And all the other tops are so pretty. I'll post mine when I get caught up. Happy weekend everyone. |
July is almost over. Cannot wait to see some progress photos. Hint, Hint.
