Imanna, I find your insights into the effects of the scrappy vs. solids in this application very interesting. Being a scrappy loving quilter, I too, would have been lost in the fabrics and ended up losing the true message. Thanks for sharing this thought!!

Here's a link to the layout I'm going to do:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2r8PIFIxvZ...lt+Layout1.jpg The only difference is that mine will have 24 columns and 32 rows. Rob |
If you want to drive yourself crazy -- compare the temps from Accuweather and the weather channel (weather.com). I used exactly the same zip code/city and some of the temps are off by 2-3 degrees. Interesting.
|
I've been using weather.com and I Think the temps given are for the time you are logged on, not the actual temps for the day. I'd noticed that the prior day's temp was not what I'd recorded. I started comparing at different times of day and they did vary. Does Accuweather have a monthly or month to date listing?

1) Search for your city 2) Click on the "Month" link above the forecast for the next few days |
Enough rain here to cause mud slides, and sinkholes, so far I can still get to work...darn.

Happy belated Valentines Day to everyone. Thought I'd give a mid month weather report. We have already had more rain in our part of Oregon than we've had in over 100 years. Yes it is raining again and am expecting an inch or more this time. The end of January it was 10F and last week it was 55 to 60 a couple days and now it is 47 and about 33-34 at night. Lots of time for sewing on these raining days.
|
Thought you were going to include a mid-month photo of the quilt too! Darn.
|
I have also notices a serious discrepancy in temps from website to website. I finally just stopped obsessing on the differences and chose one that is the most accurate to what I am experiencing from my local radio reports. I use wunderground.com I stumbled on the site a month or so ago and I can tailor it to my area and it is easy to see high and low temps. I just got my colors organized and will be actually starting my quilt this week-end.
|
Two more days and I move to the next circular row, which will be back to solids. I have no idea when I will start to square off, maybe when it is wide enough. I decided it may take more than one year to finish...that's OK too. I do like having a small decision and project to complete each day.
Each time we go the the "big" city, Grass Valley, I promise myself I will buy the thermometer that saves the high of the day. I am spending way to much time checking the one we have. Did get one day in the 50's, and have made that purple. Had to replace my one 20's which had been purple, with a white. My snow dye for blue turned out purple...necessitating the change. Moved blue to the 90's to give me time to try dying again..if no more snow will try crushed ice next summer when it will be fun to play with. Just reread this paragraph, Don't worry I don't understand it either. Blame my head cold. |
This looks interesting.I'll start my year as of my birthday because I'm a late starter and my temps will be local max & min C degrees.
|
It will be fun to have you and you opposite temperatures.
My evil 365 quilt is being mailed back by the long-armer today. Did you do that Challenge hosted by your county woman? |
Yikes! Yesterday I realized that Feb. has nearly gotten away from me so got out my notebook to record Feb high and low temps for the past week and discovered it was worse than I thought. I had only recorded Feb. 1 . Got caught up on recording, now I have to cut all those triangles and sew them together...

t i've never done a challenge before! The hardest part I think will be working out a pattern. I like using scraps but I think solids will be the way to go.
|
I think if I were to start over (which I won't) I would use solids; light to dark from low to high within a temp. range.
|
Thats what I'm going to do MNT grandma. My temp are Celcius and the Maximums will be strong colours and the minimums pastel shades. I was going to start on my birthday, end Feb but I've found local temps and can back date to Jan 1. Just have to get the fabric and I'm on my way.
Red 40 + pale 20+ Orange 35/39 pale 15/19 Yellow 30/34 lemon 10/14 Green 25/29 pale 5/9 Blue 20/24 pale 0/4 Purple 15/20 lavender 0- |
I've been getting my solids online in gradated packs. Forces me to buy colors I don't like, but need to use anyway.
|
I've ordered my fabrics (solid batiks) and will start with Jan 1. Haven't decided if I'll do high and low or just high. Good thing accuweather has temps for the full year.
I'm also thinking about doing one for the year I was born. Does anyone know where I can find the temps for the 1950s? |
I wondering how much fabric to have of each color. We seem to have a lot of 40-70's range this year. (not complaining). I'm doing 12 colors with light and dark range using F degrees. Not sure of fabric amounts. Curious how much yardage others are getting. Will a fat-quarter be enough?
I'm just making it simple and doing 2 1/2" squares, one roll for high temps and the next roll for low temps. Between each month have a 2 1/2" of black. On months with no dates like this month I will place a gray square to even out the rolls to 31 days. For me I'm keeping it simple. Next month I will select my colors. I leaning towards batiks and colors that go well with batiks. I like what others are doing. |
I am in on this challenge as well. I kept seeing the crochet versions of this idea, so am glad to have found a group working on a quilt version! My fabrics are gathered, my temperature scale is decided, and I have three patterns floating in my head. So I'll just start with one and maybe work on the others later!

I am making my quilts with 1.5" unfinished squares - one quilt for the daily highs and one quilt for the daily lows. I have 8 temperature ranges defined for my city. I bought 1/4 yard of the less common temperature ranges - mainly because that was the minimum I could buy. I probably could have gotten away with just 1/8 yard for some of them. For my most common temperature range I ended up buying 1/3 yard. |

Very cool idea to do temps for the year you were born. https://www.wunderground.com/ may have temps for the 1950s.

Dear gltnmom,
I love your cracked quote....think I will put it on my library desk if I ever get back to work. Have been sent to bed for 5 days with bronchitis and antibiotics. Does it count if you take your handquilting with you?? |
That's a cool idea qltnmom. I think I'll see if daily high and low temps from the 1950's are available for Chicago (where I was born) and Richmond (where I've lived since '68). If I do that I'll not do the half square triangle thingy that I'm doing for this one, it's looking nice, but it doesn't really tell the story of changing temps very well.

I love cloudstoo

I bet your skies are bigger than mine.

I love this idea. Originally I planned to keep track of high and low temperatures, but then decided I would be overwhelmed at the end of the year with 365 blocks. I decided to make 2 1/2" unfinished HSTs in a zigzag pattern with highs the top triangle and lows on the bottom. Then i added a 3/4" finished strip on the bottom depicting the weather (snow, rain, sun, partly sunny, etc.)
I have temp increments in 5 degrees, ranging from 0 degrees to 100 degrees, starting with blue (3 shades from dark to light), green. yellow, orange, red. If it goes over 100, I'll use red/orange/yellow flames. That's possible in my Chicago area home. I have Jan. and Feb. sewn together and March blocks ready to sew together. I took a picture, but am unable to download it from my camera. |
That sounds fun. Darn Camera.
|
These are going to be some great looking quilts. Our high today was 73. It's now 56. Saturday we are expecting sleet and snow with temperatures from high of 38 to low of 26. Gotta love this Arkansas weather! I bet it would make a colorful quilt. haha
|
Grammajo- I like your idea for the HSTs. Looking forward to seeing a picture when you camera decides to cooperate.
Teddy bear Lady- sounds like the kind of weather we've been having in Central Va. |

That makes sense! Love the weather band.
|
I like that a lot grammajo.
Rob |
I like that idea of the 3months across and 4 down. Mind if I copy you gramajo?
|
m-fay: Of course not. I took the idea from my 2017 wall calendar.
|
I've been away from home ( till next week) but have my temp...max & min...and colour chart worked out so I'll get started then.
|
Have fun with it. I'm becoming obsessed every morning with getting temps for previous day, so I learn what colors I'll be using. :D I had higher temps in Feb. than I've had so far in March. I've only had 3 days with just a trace of snow overnight, though 2-4" is expected overnight until tomorrow night.

Fourth round completed. It is getting trickier to plan the size and shapes to come. I have no idea what size this is going to get to. I am enjoying the randomness. Purple is 60 degrees, and the lone red is 70.
