tohkatz68: Very pretty. Congratulations on an empty bin.

Neat quilt Tokhatz!

Like the pattern. It is worth bookmarking! Hope I can remember "Mellow Yellow".:)

Irishrose2 02-28-2020 08:16 PM

tohkatz68, I've made two QOVs using that pattern. I like the black and yellow. Very nice!

Teen 02-28-2020 10:19 PM

Tohka.....my fav colorway of all time. Black/white/yellow. I love this quilt. Cool pattern...

Rff1010 02-29-2020 12:30 AM

Retiredteach-that quilt is phenomenal! I hope whomever gets it appreciates the masterwork.

Love the mellow yellow.

Jennie Doan/ missouri star just published a "new" method for Lemoyne stars that just looks darling. I have some self-made 5" charms that I'm going to try the technique on tomorrow. I may have found my next scrappy quilt.

Karamarie 02-29-2020 05:01 AM

I just have to stay out of quilt shops or I am too tempted. Works for me.

grann of 6 02-29-2020 05:29 AM

Well, I have to buckle down and get busy using what I have purchased of late. I took advantage of Connecting Threads clearance sale with an extra 20% off, making the fabric about $4 a yard, got some blenders to add to what has been dwindling, 10 yds of one, 6 yds of 2 others. One is a soft daffodil yellow that will spice up things a bit. Yesterday my friends came over to take me to lunch and pay off our trip money. We went to a store that has great prices on all their fabric. I got backing for my Lancaster collection, the whole bolt of 10 yds for $8.29 a yard, pretty much unheard of for Moda fabric anywhere around here. Everything i have gotten will get used at some point in the near future.
Ladies, all your quilts are very nice. And that kiddie wall hanging is adorable.

tohkatz68 02-29-2020 09:23 AM

Thank you for the comments. Enjoy seeing what everyone is making from their stash :)

Belfrybat 02-29-2020 04:39 PM

Wow! I love all those strip and stash fabric quilts, especially the blue one (my favourite colour). I just posted pics of three I've finished from stash on the UFO thread. And I've already used 4 yards of the tea-dyed muslin I purchased last week. So far I've used (or given away) about 26 yards of fabric from stash in 2020, and used 4 sheets from my backing stash. My goal is to end up emptying the equivalent of one shelving unit by the end of the year. I figure that will be around 200 yards.

LindaJane 02-29-2020 05:33 PM

first quilt finish 2020

Finish a quilt from a Jelly Roll race from the Iowa state fair at least three years ago. I only bought 4 yards of fabric to finish the borders and bindings everything else came from stash.

Teen 02-29-2020 07:38 PM

I used every inch of the toweling yardage I bought 2 weeks ago....so in/out in 30 days was successful. Yea me!

WMUTeach 03-01-2020 03:59 AM

Had to go to the fabric store a couple of days ago. I am making three baby quilts and just could not come up with fabric combinations that look good together and are baby like enough to please me. Bought reproduction juvenile prints that will be "scappyfied" into quilts. Got two cuts large enough for backing and should be able to get 5 - 6 baby quilts from what I purchased. Just had a hard time designing and gifting baby boy quilts that are pinks and flowers and fluff. My new quilts will be good for boys or girls That makes gifting easier!.

On the other side of this conversation, I layered three quilts yesterday that had top, batting and back all from my stash. Today begins quilting and binding work. Photos when they are finished.

Conchalea 03-01-2020 04:20 AM

Lots of powering through stash fabric going on here! Having to buy fabric to finish a quilt is a natural result of using up what we have. The other choice is to stop wuilting... I don't consider that to be an option! Great job to everyone diving into stash & using it to create a useful quilt.

Iceblossom 03-02-2020 03:11 PM

Well I'm doing pretty darn good on not buying fabric! I did go check today to see if a small wool quilt tied with embroidery floss was sold or not, and it found a new home without me so good deal.

I've been sort of reeling in overload from the Bonnie Hunter Mystery and then my costuming, but I'm getting stuff put away and reorganized and am about to start slicing and dicing some stash and getting it done. I was looking at a book of blocks the other day and have decided on changing my first civil war quilt. Need to draft it out to my size and satisfaction. I think I'm going to be happier with this, my first one was going to be very random scrappy and this will be more "use a lot of fabric" scrappy but I will match the fabrics in each block to some extent.

First concept was Gentleman's Fancy/Rambling Rose variation, basically a lot of triangles, I would have all pieces different. Now I'm thinking of Joseph's Coat, where i emphasize the star shape in the center and use repeats of the same fabric in different quadrants. Each block would be shaded similarly but each would have a different set of fabrics. Maybe sash wide with star points at the sashing?? Something to think about.

I do have my fast black and white and minions top to do next though. I should also make one more piece of bias binding for a previous project before I actually start that. Think I feel motivated enough to get off the computer and get that going so I can cut it apart tomorrow at group.

Teen 03-02-2020 03:33 PM

So, part of my stash issue is that I tend to over buy yardage for projects for a "just in case"....then the extra that I didn't need is absorbed into stash. When I say over buy, I don't just mean a 1/2 yard. My latest quilt required browns, which I have very little since it is a least favorite color to work with. I designed a pattern on EQ8 and only bought what EQ8 recommended plus the yardage for binding. I'm pleased to report that I had very little scrap left, which I cut up into usable sizes. That was a nice feeling and one I hope to be mindful of in the future. Lesson learned....

Cattitude 03-03-2020 08:30 AM

Two months in and one $15 impulse buy so not too bad.

Yesterday I did something I didn’t think I would be doing as I have a small stash.....I donated fabric to the thrift store. Less than 10m but it was very therapeutic! In the past I had a tendency to pick out gorgeous bright prints.....and then spend hours and hours trying to find a way to use them. It always came down to what else I would need to buy to make it work. Or I would have large pieces of pretty leftovers from a finished project....and scour every online fabric site to find other fabric in the line to make another. Having made those mistakes more than once I think I have learned my lesson......Yeah!

I cut a 5” strip and 2.5” strip of each fabric for my scrappy bin and bagged up the rest for donation.

I have also been making a major dent in my usable stash, but no completions to share just yet.

Nicely done! I hope you learned your lesson!
sounds like one we could all learn.

Ive been taking some scrap 5" squares and making Lemoyne blocks using MSQ new tutorial. Each block takes 30 min but I think the end will be lovely and scrappy.

elly66 03-03-2020 08:39 AM

I have been busy using stash though i did order 4 1/2 yards of solids. 1 1/2 yards will be used for projects I'm currently working on while the other three will be on hand (in stash :)). I've also had close to 10 1/2 yards used from stash for February so not too bad for the big picture.
I understand Teen's issues. I have done the same with the overbuying. Getting better about it though.
Happy Quilting everyone.

WMUTeach 03-03-2020 04:44 PM

Love your courage, Cattitude. Your process gives me something to think about. I have a quilt retreat coming in April and maybe I can "dump" some of my excess stash there. I really would like to deminsh the stash a little faster.

Teen 03-07-2020 04:01 PM

A little slip off wagon...I bought a beautiful panel I could not pass up...have no idea on plans for it but whatever......lol...then I grabbed the bumper and swung myself back on. All good.... Also, today, I pulled out a project I kitted up a year ago. It took me a year to collect all the fabrics for it...some from stash...some colors I didn't have so I'd buy on sale. The project is currently in 2 craft containers and 2 pouches so it was quite the stack of fabric. When I pulled it out, it left a big dent in my kitted projects shelves. Getr'done!!

grann of 6 03-07-2020 05:11 PM

Well, I tumbled off the wagon, skinned my knees again, and bruised my credit card. My cyber friend on the other side of the country "coerced' me into buying a couple FQ collections since they were on clearance. But I have already done pretty good damage to one collection of 30 FQs, used 24 of them in a lap quilt, and what's left of the pieces are becoming the binding. I had a piece of fabric, nearly 5 yards in the stash for a couple years, that is perfect for the backing, none of that left. So all in all that was a good purchase. The other FQ collection is already in the planning stage for another quilt.

happylab 03-07-2020 08:44 PM

I signed up for a mystery lock-in. I had 6 fabrics from my stash, yea! But needed 8.5 yards’ (yes yards) of background fabric for king size top. So I needed to buy 9 yards of fabric. I ended up choosing 2 fabrics for the background. 2.5 yards (which I had), and 6.5 yards, (I bought). I heard it will add an interesting twist to the top. The mystery will be a 12 hour sewn in. I’m looking forward to this. I’ve wanted to do this for years, but life kept getting in the way. This year I decided just to do it.
I also found the Paducah on line store. Oh my, I feel off the wagon again. I found panels for 2 projects I want to do, and two backing fabrics (a dinosaur and solar system pieces sized for twin beds. I’m going to find backing fabric and make a quick throw for my 2 GN. I bought some backing fabric, but will use it for background fabric. I can see this could be my down fall for on line fabrics. Now I have 3 on line stores for temptation. Oh well, have a happy daylights saving everyone. In less than 4 hours.

oksewglad 03-08-2020 06:07 AM

As usual love hearing how we falter, just a bit and then pick ourselves up!
My current project doesn't involve new fabric or even yardage! I'm using up LO triangles...lots of triangles. The centerpiece of the project is a 20" square made up of 1" finished HST's or 800 triangles! Next round uses larger pieces...

retiredteacher09 03-08-2020 06:19 PM

Here’s a hand-up for the people that took a quick step off. Have fun with the new fabric.

oksewglad: When I read 1” finished HSTs, my first thought was ironing all those HSTs and getting them to match up.

I am hoping to stop at SRHarris tomorrow but the plan is to just look. Lol!

WMUTeach 03-08-2020 06:38 PM

Still working on my purple stash buster. It has unexpectedly turned into a labor of love. One of my friends had a double lung transplant 6 years ago and has now her body is rejecting them. She is back to Cleveland Clinic while she waits for new lungs. In the mean time I took the quilt to our Bible study group and the gals signed it and added an encouraging scripture verse to the the white squares.

I started quilting the purple scrap buster this afternoon and should have it finished and bound by Wednesday or Thursday. I will take a photo of it finished.

jmoore 03-09-2020 02:43 AM

Teen, I will be anxious to see photos of your kitted project. I’m sure it will feel good to have it removed from your projects shelf.

I just finished an Arkansas Crossroads scrappy quilt and was able to use up a pile of leaders/enders That have been slowly accumulating. Once I figure out the posting photo thing... I’ll have quite a few to share. : )

HaHa..worst part is trimming them to 1 1/2" and then pressing the seams open. Sometimes there are missed kisses in the match ups; but this is for fun and not for show. The next blocks will be using 1 1/4" and it's amazing how much faster they go together in a block, but I will have more blocks.

I have made a number of the Arkansa Crossroads quilts and like the pattern. On another QB thread, I posted a photo of one I made a number of years ago and someone wanted the pattern. Goodness, I don't know if I ever had a pattern. So here comes my question. Did you use an online pattern and if so can you post the link so I can pass it on to the folks in the other group. I would like to pass on a version that is "tried and true" so to speak. Thanks.

Cattitude 03-09-2020 06:57 PM

As someone posted earlier, using up stash often equals needing to bring more in to complete projects. Then the trip to the quilt shop.....will I stick to the list or succumb to temptation?

Today I stuck to the list, Yeah! A couple years ago my hubby bought me a jelly roll for Christmas. I started to make the MSQC North Star which calls for one jelly roll. I had very little waste but still fell well short of what was required for 36 blocks. Lens Mill (SW Ont. for those not familiar) does not clear out older lines and I was able to pick up .25m of 5 different fabrics so that I will be able to finish off. What a lucky break! Also needed .5m of a white blender, a small piece of aqua and blue and burgundy solids for some background. That’s it, that’s all, temptation avoided!

Feel good on one hand but on the other hand I keep thinking don’t pat yourself on the back too much.....it’s only been two months.:D

Teen 03-09-2020 07:32 PM

Lol@Cattitude! Yep, only 2 months in. The Spring collections are hitting the stores now. Lordy... Great job on resisting temptation so I'm patting you on the back instead.

Oksewglad: Pressing the seams open? Wow but I suppose that does cut down on a lot of bulk.

I made a quick but ‘hard on the pocketbook’ jump today. I stopped at SRHarris just to look around. I ended up with 14.63 yards of fabric and 3 booklets of Turning Twenty patterns. I guess I must have been in the buying mood after successfully completing my trip to Social Security and getting lost because I didn’t think my GPS should aim me for a gravel pit. Lol. My son figures there was a street to cut over on the road before I got to the pit but I wasn’t about to find out.

However, I bought 6 half yards for a baby quilt. I saw a sample at my LQS with an ABC panel cut apart and framed with the Timeless Treasures dotted fabric. I bought the panel last fall and now have enough for strips to go around each ABC block I hope. The quilt will eventually be for my grandson.

Then I bought neutrals of army green, a small patterned green, a solid gray, and a patterned darker gray. I have been using the army green in my quilts to calm the bright ones down.

So, all in all, I do have a plan for them.

Iceblossom 03-10-2020 07:43 AM

I am doing well on my not buying, but I am still in my after-Frolic hangover and have not been productive sewing.

I have, however, been drinking a lot of coffee and playing video games! Today is Tuesday quilt day and I have absolutely nothing to bring with me, I think I'll grab my stack of Civil War 10" blocks and sort them and look busy.

One of the ladies in my group is going through a hard time with her own and her husband's health. A couple of weeks ago I told her I would start bringing lunch on Tuesdays for her to take home. I already had some hot/cold bags from the dollar store and the food is warm enough to reheat or cool enough to freeze, depending on her schedule. Today is Corned Beef and Cabbage -- one of my hubby's favorites he never had before he lived with me. He looks forward to March being "Corned Beef Month".

Grammahunt 03-10-2020 07:58 AM

Thank you for this group!
I've tried in years past, but always fail as soon as I enter a quilt shop.
My Name is Judy and I'm a Fabricaholic! For Sure!!!

As a way to use up fabric I've had for years I have joined in a Shoebox Project. I've committed to 100 20 x 20 doll blankets for the girls, and 100 drawstring bags for the boys. I'm 50 in for the blankets and just beginning the bags. I think this will fairly well deplete my stash.

The scraps from said projects get cut into 2" and larger squares. I have baskets for squares of each size. When the larger pieces are gone I'll piece doll blanket tops and buy backing if I necessary.

I'm a girl with a plan. Now I have accountability too. Thanks.

Irishrose2 03-10-2020 10:38 AM

What a lovely thing to do, iceblossom. I cook for a friend twice a week - sometimes it comes up fast.

I'm glad everyone is getting some quilting done. I seem to get further and further behind. Had a gall bladder attack over the weekend and am very tired (and hungry now. This, too, will pass.

Iceblossom 03-10-2020 12:47 PM

Welcome aboard, Grammahunt. I met my hubby on line playing video games back in 2001, he lived in Grand Rapids back then and his mom and most of this family are still back there too.

I did play with and sort my Civil War fabrics some at group today, I called them blocks before but most of them are 10" squares from when I did swapping back around Y2K (notice... just before I met the hubby!). I'm actually not that a big a fan of the colors and prints but I was always up for another swap and so it goes and my collection grew. Between the squares, bits and pieces, and yardage, I estimate I have enough fabric for at least 3 tops and I'm going to try and work with them this year.

So first will be a Joseph's Coat variation, still have some design issues to work out but I've got the overall concept pretty happy. Each block will be made with coordinating fabrics so that the repeats in that block are the same (that is, four squares are each of the same, all the star points, etc.) but the squares will be different and the color placement might be some different too. I'd like to have red/madder brown stars and indigo blue triangle points in the corner units. It will make more sense once I make a picture! I could still do the Gentleman's Fancy/Rambler variation I was thinking of originally and do that all over "chaotic" scrappy with each piece in the block unique. The third will probably feature a striped fabric and have vertical columns of diagonally set small blocks, so one row all 9-patch, another churn dash, etc. for 5-7 different rows.

Anyway, I'm always enthused after my quilter time and ready to look at that slice and dice minions project next up!

ckcowl 03-11-2020 10:01 AM

I finished my son’s king size quilt and used a lot of stash fabric !
I used 22 1/4 yards of fabric for the top, 3 yards of wide backing fabric and a king size wool batting. I loved making this quilt but am glad it’s done. Now- to see what else I can pull from the shelves to make something a bit smaller.

retiredteacher09 03-11-2020 05:07 PM

ckcowl: Congratulations on your finish! That is a lot of yardage to use.

Scrapbuster: a quilt of encouragement and affection

1 Attachment(s)
Here it is! My version of the Scrap Buster. The top is all from my purple stash and white scraps. Batting is W & N pieced (two pieces and iron on tape). The backing is a late discovery from my stash too! Thread was found in a box of odd spools donated to my guild and now used. Whoo-Hoo! A 60 X 60 quilt that was virtually free.

Now the story begins. I am one who believes God speaks to us is small ways. And now and again I have been directed to give quilts to individuals. I was sewing along about a week and a half ago when I heard in my heart and in my head that a acquaintance from my Bible Study should be given this quilt. Briefly, six years ago she was given a double lung transplant but starting experience rejection this past fall. After several trips to her surgery clinic, she received the news that she has not been approved for a second transplant. She is too weak to endure another surgery. So, this quilt is for her. The large white squares hold a Bible scripture of encouragement and the name of one of the group from the study. It will go to her as soon as she returns home perhaps this week-end. She may be returning to hospice. I keep hearing from others who know her well that purple was one of her favorite colors. I did not know. I believe that there was a plan for this quilt long before I dove into my purple bin in an effort to reduce my stash. It was hers all along.

Teen 03-12-2020 02:03 PM

WMUteach....this quilt is stunning and the story of your gift beautiful. I believe the same in terms of God's guidance when it comes to our giving hearts as quilters. It has happened to me on many occasion. May she be blessed and comforted by your gift. This is a gorgeous quilt.
