Yay!! Just found a backing for Frolic—and will still have enough left to back another smallish quilt. So that quilt will be 100% from stash. It was hard not to go get one more raspberry or one more aqua, but I didn’t even use all that was pulled from stash.

Great use of your stashes Ok and Teen. Thanks for sharing your projects. They look great.
I'm doing well so far. The only purchased lately has been some matching machine thread. Keep up the great work everyone. It is so satisfying playing in the stash and seeing it with new eyes (sometimes). I passed on about 13 lbs of scraps and yardage that I knew I wouldn't be able to use. So, nothing new in. And, have just about finished a new project using fabrics that I purchased last year. I just need to add the borders and I will post a photo. |
Love the pillow Teen!
I’ve got a ton of unbundled fat quarters and I’d like to pull some that coordinate and try doing the Teen FQ challenge myself. Just need to decide how many to pull together into my “bundle”. Rob |
I am officially done "fixing' that bag of hand dyed fabrics and have posted a pix in the Bonnie Hunter thread:
https://www.quiltingboard.com/8356597-post1302.html Oh my goodness, I added an entire box to my stash with one $7.99 purchase and a good 40 hours of work and about $40 worth of supplies that is what I have left -- after the Bonnie Hunter quilt. So the original project, a large (2" finished log) masculine camo colored log cabin is still there in what is left. As is the new idea for the embellished lone star. I think that will be everything I want out of that bag... So true confession times here: (1) I do really enjoy dyeing but I'm more about natural materials and going into the woods with a basket and coming out with twigs and berries and stuff. Unfortunately, the sorts of results I want are going to be more likely with wool or silk and I work in cotton which typically results in more subtle results than the types of things I'm doing right now or this big bag of artificial dyes. Plus, I prefer to do more patterned things than the blotchy subtlety of this batch of hand dyes. But I'd be very happy in the backyard with a boiling cauldron, stirring it with an old broom handle and reciting lines from Macbeth. Confession (2): I have a working title for the new project. I was showing it to the hubby and explaining how I want to use the greens and purples and the bright accent pop for a luminescent effect. Then he replies to me in his best Beavis & Butthead voice "heh, it looks like pot leaves" and then in his normal voice "but you'd need to change these points". He's talking about the outer points, I'd be reversing the colors to green foreground and the orange/color pop to background on black or dark purple anyway but he wants to add a green to the end of the diamonds. I sighed and said and you want me to emphasize that don't you?? He's right (I hadn't "seen" what changing the colors would do)... so going to do it his way but it will be something we will keep or at least give consciously. Might reconsider it to the designed size and be wall art instead of going bed sized. Working title: My husband is not a subtle man. |
Ice, still chuckling! "Double, double, toil and trouble!"
On my fabric inspiration I've named it --Take a Walk on the Wild Side" Will try to take picks of my menagerie of choices. One of those between days...funeral this morning and Grands BB game later this afternoon... |
Yea, Rob!!! So happy I inspired you to do your own FQ challenge. If I could make a recommendation...I would kit up a bundle that matches your home decor...lol....most of my 11 projects were motivated towards decorating my new home tho I did make a couple of things for gifts.... Just something to think about. Good luck and can't wait to see what you come up with in your challenge.
in addition to the pillows shared, today, I used 8 FQ from my stash to make solid colored throw pillows for my couch, as well. Now,,starting on a hexi pillow for my MIL. She gave me a small FQ bundle (2 years ago..ugh!) I haven't cut into and they are her colors so I'm regifting right back to her. Lol... |
One month down and 11 more to go! Proud of all of you for holding fast and dipping deep into your stash to finish projects or purchasing just what is needed and not what temped your eyes! On to February!!
|
Oh Dear.... I seem to have fallen off the wagon after doing a rather spectacular job earlier this week at just leaning over the side a bit. I'm afraid that one of those Bluprint ads got me. 90 batik fat quarters for around $130 including tax and free shipping... In my defense, I've put that same box of 90 fat quarters in my cart and deleted it again at least once a month for the last 3 or 4 years.....
Rob:shock: |
The nice thing about that fall Rryder, is those fat quarters will help cushion you when you land!
My dependable Goodwill (near the Bowling Alley) for fabric had some more gorgeous stuff but they are upping the price to about $3 a yard which helps me keep true to myself. That Laurel Burch fabric I wanted last week, well someone else wanted it more and it's still another week or two before it would have come up for sale. But at the other store on the way home, I bought about 8 yards of large scale bicycle/accessory stuff by Shamash and Sons for $8.00. It's still on the bolt, I just counted the rings and unwound a couple rounds to see that it was all ok. It's big enough for a back and/or a OBW for a bike fan, I almost talked myself out of it and had even put it back but grabbed on the way back out since I was going to stand in line anyway... |
Rob: Here’s a hand up! Enjoy that FQ bundle.
Iceblossom: Great purchase. |
Iceblossom, I checked out your BH mystery quilt. I am blown away by your hand dyes. They really came out beautiful.
I had an almost fall and a save by the seat of my pants fall. I went out yesterday to purchase some pink and white stripe fabric for a small project. I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for in the right shade. So, I didn't buy anything. (And, I was at Joann Fabrics.) While there looking, I remembered something in my stash that just so happened to be in the exact right shade. So, I went home and sure enough, there was plenty for this small fabric and it was a perfect match. Now, why couldn't I have thought about that before I went out. I even looked in stash before I went out. But, I admit, this piece wasn't in the color drawers. This piece was in the drawer that I save for doll clothes for my granddaughters. I guess, I am just going to have to resolve to look a little further from now on. But, a save is a save. Nothing in for the moment. Rob, enjoy your fat quarter bundle and make lots of nice things with it. |

I have two finished from last month--and I am finally smart enough to post pics under the new format...:p
The first is a completion from the squares I got from my "Fabric Angel". The second is embroidered squares, about 7-years old and also from my angel. It has been kitted for some time with stash! :o It has a twin that is currently in the redesign phase because I had to tweak this one. Also, the backing for both was in stash--8-1/2 and 9 yards.. |
Doesn't it feel good to use up that fabric? WTG.

Forgot part of the story about the bolt of bike fabric... that was 02/02/2020 and with the bolt of fabric (which I had put down once and grabbed again on the way out), the total was $20.20 and I have the receipt to prove it. So it must be lucky bike fabric!
I'm sending out some of my long-term collection boxes of fabric to people. I can tell I'm unlikely to have anything to add to them any time soon. If there is someone that I've promised something to that doesn't involve crumbs, children or the color purple, please let me know. I thought I saved everything I needed from my messages here before I deleted them (mail box was full) but I'm already finding out that I'm not finding things... and various pieces of fabric keep coming to the surface that I think may need to be sent off. I know some of them are from Missingfabrics, it absolutely amazes me the number of times I have exactly what they want and I'm willing to send it to them free even and their ad isn't removed/updated and I'm never contacted. I have 2 fabrics and a stack of related fabrics that need to go into their boxes because they've been sitting out unclaimed for the last year. |
Finished 2 pillow slips = 2 yd. Got out enough for 2 more. They are great for quilt qroup; doesn't take much space, mindless so I can talk and just enough time to finish them.
|
Well.....I had to buy fabric this week. I have a wildlife panel that I designed a quilt in EQ8 for and I have no brown fabrics....so, I bought only the yardage needed for the quilt. As soon as it arrives, I'll be whacking away to make a quilt for my male cousin. I'm considering minkie backing, which I'll need to buy, as well. Not sure yet.... I'm thinking purchase is cool since nothing will go to stash and I had nothing in stash to begin with. Other than that, I'm staying the course.

I guess I leaned over the side too far, fell off and skinned my knees and my credit card. But, technically, I guess it was not really a fall, as I ordered backing and border and binding fabric for a stash buster i just made. it is a version of an irish chain, made with 2 1/2 Summer Breeze jelly rolls, and 3 yards of WOW. It is big, 82" square without borders yet. Everything I ordered will be used to finish it up.
|
Motorcyclemad, lovely finishes!
|
grann of 6- here’s a virtual bandaid for those skinned knees. I won’t send any methyolate (or was it mercurachrome that stung so bad), just wash it off good and maybe put some bacitracin on it before you apply the bandaid.
Rob |
Well, I think i should survive the fall. Any fabric i have left will go towards the next Summer Breeze project, since i still have 1 1/2 jelly rolls left. I think a quick rail fence will do the trick. Thanks for the band aid.

I am working on a UFO from a Jelly Roll Race. I cut it up and added some applique blocks. So needed some fabric to finish the borders. I went to JoAnns and bought 4 yards of black/white/tan fabrics for border and binding.
They were having a special that you could take a Christmas clearance item with each purpose. The store near me was letting you take as much of the Christmas clearance as you wanted and the clerk was encouraging us to take more so she wouldn't have to deal with boxing up what was left.. So I came home with 2 dozen spools of ribbon, lots of gift bags, tissue paper and ornaments. I got it all put away with the Christmas stuff for next year. So while I didn't add to the fabric stash much I did add to the Christmas stash. I will find purposes for all of it next year for projects or share with others. I did get some little trees that will make a nice addition to my Christmas village. |
LindaJane, I think you are good. Like you said, you didn't really add to the fabric stash so the Moratorium Police aren't gonna come knockin' :D

Minor thrift store purchase report -- last night I went to watch hubby's bowling league night, right across the street is a Value Village. I've gotten some other scores there before, the Indonesian batiks/wraps was one of them.
Last night in yardage there was a lovely piece of Jinny Beyer about 4 yards for $2.99 and then I saw a bag of scraps that had more in there, plus some other nice fabrics for $3.99. When I opened it up there was a partial 4-block OBW variation, more of the yardage that just had little squares taken out, some lovely Clothworks Alaskan fabrics, one of which I picked up while I was on my cruise the other year, the other I "couldn't afford then". Those are up in the top left corner, watercolor looking flowers and mountains. Some Clothworks solid half yards? Haven't untied the bundle, they feel bigger than fat quarters. And some Christmas I think fat eigths? maybe from Moda -- really nice but I don't collect Christmas any more so they will be moving on. As well as a couple Judy Rothermal civil war scraps and some bright happy prints, the sort I'm enjoying right now. Some immediate little bits going to the crumb quilter. OK, so I got the good one but in my defense I did leave two other bags of scraps and some yardage behind... |
Iceblossom, I wouldn't have been able to pass up your bargains! In fact, at those prices I might have thrown caution to the winds & bought it all. Good haul, & I'll help you climb back aboard.

As I have shared, I don't have a massive stash but I'm quite happy to report that I have emptied 5 mini bolts since the first of the year for various quilt and craft projects. Probably close to 12 yards...That's really good for me. One mini bolt (maybe 3 yards) has been sitting there for over 2 years. This week, I whacked into a FQ bundle that was a year old and chose a pattern and size quilt to use almost the whole bundle. I have maybe a 3 inch strip left of each fabric so I'm going to dig in stash and add enough of various blenders to make a multi-fabric binding. It felt so good!

Have already passed on the Christmas prints at the small group, along with a couple others. So already reducing it.
Today I am trying to get most of the Frolic quilt put together, then borders tomorrow (borders are made, will just have to attach). Goal is to have the top done by Friday/Valentines Day. Not sure if I mentioned it here or in the Bonnie Hunter thread but Saturday we are going to do something different and hubby and I will go to our first live football game together. I actually instigated this -- Seattle has an XFL franchise and we will be there for the home opener/first ever home game. I'm expecting the weather to be absolutely horrible, personally I loved the King Dome and would have never built an outdoor stadium in Seattle, but there you go.... I'm looking forward to getting this project done and slap some borders on the one I've put aside for this. And then on to the next slice and dice project. I mentioned it last year and it is the next up -- Minions! This is both a design test and a vision compromise sort of project. In order to use fabric I need to be "less perfect" and just find uses for stuff, as I've been saying whatever I can use it for is the perfect use for it. So the old me would say, "oh no, Minions don't belong in an adult bold floral quilt," the new me says -- "well, it meets your design requirements of black and white and yellow medium-large scale so why not??". The reality is that with my vision issues I can't really tell what sort of design the fabric is from 5 feet away, especially when it's cut smaller than yardage. I can see colors and shapes but not detail so well. I can see it clearly at working distance, but not that galloping horse from 6 feet away... |

I leaned over the wagon and grabbed 3 pieces of sale fabric on sale At LQS. 1 yard of solid for $4.00 each and a 1/2 yard for $4.00. They all go into my stash. I like to support my LQS. I just went in there to buy a flying geese ruler. (One of my favorite rulers). I’m in the process of making several projects from my stash, nothing completed yet, but some close. Happy sewing/quilting everyone.

Well, I am going to have to jump off the wagon and do some shopping. i pulled out some (310) HSTs that had been languishing for close to 10 years, simply because they needed squaring up. They were made early in my quilting life when I didn't understand the importance of a block being square or uniform. So they became my next UFO challenge. Anyhow, they are all squared, and sewed together into a smallish top, about 39"X 45". i had 2 pieces of the coordinating fabric, but pulling them out, they are not big enough. I did find a JR of Bella solids that matches the off-white, But there is nothing that remotely goes with any of the prints. The collection is Dandelion Girl. i am going to have to go out tomorrow and see what I can find for a backing. i'll hold off on putting on a border with one of the prints till I can find something suitable for the backing.
|
Woohoo!!!!! Don't have to jump off the wagon after all. While waiting for my soup to heat i found some very soft yellow solid that works for the backing, and i can use the yellow print for a border and the check for the binding.
|
Hooray for stash shopping, Grann -- you go!
|
happylab; enjoy your purchase, here's a hands-up.
|
I took a slight tumble today. We had some cute bunny fabric that I used in a mini quilt for the shop. I spent the afternoon cutting fabric for kits and folding. It was too much for me and I caved bring home about a yard of fabric! Hope to make some cute table runners for Easter for family members.

Woohoo, Road to Florida quilt finished, used up a lot of reproduction fq's (box doesn't seem any less full, hmm?). Almost stumbled, needed backing but found a leftover over piece buried in yet another box. Moved here almost three years ago and still finding things buried in the closet.

Nice top Tohkatz! It appeals to me on a number of levels even without use of stash.
Isn't it amazing the things we find? |

Nice quilt tohkatz68!
I had another lean over the edge of the wagon yesterday. Got an email from Quilt in a Day about their skinny bolts and went looking for lights and light medium blenders in blues and greens since I go through those fairly quickly and my stash has gotten low on them. I found a good variety in smaller cuts and at prices between 2 and 4 dollars a yard And was patting myself on the back for mindful shopping when I spotted a medium scale print (definitely not a blender). It managed to find its way into my cart and made it all the way through the checkout process. I think I can still put it into the “mindful” category as it was also a skinny and is the same fabric that was used in a UFO that needs borders and binding to be completed. Rob |
