Tohkatz, I put in pictures pretty much how I always did but I usually have an extra step because I'm using an old school camera and not a smart phone, so my first step is to go to this site to reduce the file size of the photos:
https://www.reduceimages.com/
I do that first and download them to my computer through that site. It doesn't do much, but it reduces my pictures and doesn't set off my virus scanners.

Then I start out typing in the Quick Reply box. When done, I click on Go Advanced, and find the Manage Attachments button in the middle of stuff, it doesn't stick out -- look for it! It's a quick click to go into Downloads.

Once you are in the attach file screen though, it defaults to the old vertical layout. The actual button you need is way to the far right, I have to stretch my window to find it.

Thanks Iceblossom, I'm goning to try this.

I also have several kits I have gotten, so I have them all cut and bagged. And since i dislike UFO's I make sure to see the project to completion, no unfinished tops stacked up. I prep the top for quilting and then stack the backing, batting, and top on a bed in the spare bedroom so they are ready and waiting to go on the longarm. Right now I have 2 ready to go. And I have 3 quilts to quilt for a friend, they are next after I finish my 2. this method is working well for me so far.

I'm impressed with how organized you are! It's not my gift. No wonder I have half-baked projects everywhere!

Rff1010 01-15-2020 01:25 AM

So like all of you in trying to work down stash...and not spend extra money .... And I find myself in a quandary. I have 2 projects going at the moment both using purple....and I went to get more from the scrap bin. And
1) I'm using a pale lavender for a youth churn dash...11 blocks completed..that's not going to be large enough!
2) I'm doing Bonnie Hunters "Daybreak" and all medium and deep purple scrappies for the square in squares. (I have some ombre teal yardage for the background - also stash)

So what say you- exception worthy? I'm thinking 2 FQ for the daybreak and half yard for the churn dash.

Iceblossom 01-15-2020 03:01 AM

If you need fabric to finish a project and you've already shopped your stash, you can get what you need with a free conscience.

Just try to keep it to what you need and don't go getting distracted over there in the reds or yellows!

For the youth quilt, how many more blocks are you needing to make?

I was a good girl and stayed to the purples. I even had the baggie of samples to compare so I only bought 1 full (for the churn dashes) and 2 halves (for the scrappy) that coordinated.

Joanne's kindly obliged with a $5 off $5 or more coupon. So $12 of fabric was only $7....(I looked but was strong).

Yeah bay-bee!

retiredteacher09 01-15-2020 05:59 PM

Tohkatz68: I really like that design. It gives me an idea for some big orphan squares.

Whoo-Hoo! Congratulations on your purposeful shopping and not adding to your stash. Stand up and be proud! Now sit down and finish those two purples. :~) Looking for photos soon.

The comfort quilt leader asked to take over the design and production of kits for a 12" block Log Cabin Quilt. I'm back in business.

ckcowl 01-16-2020 04:24 AM

I don’t have a picture of the quilt yet, still need to quilt and bind it but I used 22 1/4 yards of stash fabric to create a king size quilt for my youngest son. I knew I wouldn’t have it done for Christmas so decided to get it done for his March birthday. I used a panel I’ve had for ages and then pretty much depleted my blues for the log cabin parts. I combined two different patterns to make it. There is actually a bit of a gap on the shelves. I’ve also been using 3” squares as leaders/ Enders and putting together 16 patches - working on using up those scraps everywhere too. I’m really hoping to use up a lot more of what I have this year. I have numerous wide backs on the shelves too so I won’t even have to spend money on those this year.

jmoore 01-16-2020 05:22 AM

Tohkatz, great finish and a lovely quilt.

Rff1010, sounds like a great deal on necessary fabric for your projects w/o feeling guilty. yay

Conchalea 01-16-2020 06:59 AM

Ckcowl, I always enjoy your quilts, so I look forward to seeing this one. Sounds like you're digging into your stash, too!

Conchalea 01-16-2020 07:07 AM

Everyone is doing well using their stash! I'm glad Rob mentioned a large picture, as the "thumbnail" tag didn't register with me. Ah ha! I have to click on the pic to see a larger version! Duh. I'm spending most of my time packing rather than sewing, & my brain is overloaded. I've also dropped heavy things on each foot. Who knew packing is hazardous?!? Both feet have big bruises as a result. I'll be glad when I'm done.

Belfrybat 01-16-2020 09:28 AM

Conchlea - take care with your footsies. You'll need them to help unpack. I had two of JoAnn's $5.00 off coupons, but instead of buying fabric, I purchased 4 skeins of yarn for my church's prayer shawl ministry. I ended up paying less than $3.00 for the 4 skeins.

As to fabric - no purchases for me AND I have emptied out 3 drawers of scraps and donated them to a thrift shop. I don't particularly care to make scrappy quilts, but since I belong to a prayer quilting group plus do the quilting for them I end up with tons of scraps. This past year I've forced myself to make scrappy quilts to use them up. I sorted through and kept anything 1/4 yard or more and strips larger than 2" wide. So I still have scraps, but none of the small stuff. I really can't assess how much yardage they would equal, so I'm going with 15.

A nice "neutrals" quilt. We just talked about neutrals at our last guild meeting. A couple of gals thought neutrals were light values of colors..think pastels..

Stay strong folks! Rff1010 is a great example of how to!

joe'smom 01-16-2020 04:12 PM

Is the photo of this 'neutrals' quilt quite a few pages back?

I've been working on my first stash kit in the lull between BHMQ clues. I thought I would try Bonnie's 'webbing' technique, but it didn't work for me because I prefer to press and spray every seam as I go. However, I am following the procedure except for the webbing part (that is, I'm snipping apart my pieces rather than leaving them attached to each other).

I did buy some backing that was on sale for the mystery; normally I don't think of backing until I see my finished top, but I happened upon this while looking at the latest Hawthorne Threads newsletter and it did seem to be just the right colors.

Conchalea 01-19-2020 05:21 AM

Yesterday after my stress-relieving Harley ride, I started consolidating my fabric for the impending move. I've been gifted fabric from 2 sources, & packed it all together in 1 box. I found a plastic container for scrapbooking that has 2 sides-1 that now has some leftover blocks from a quilt since it's about 14 X 14, & the reverse side is divided & just the right size for 2 rows of FQs. So it's now full & I *think* most of my FQs are in there. I plan to make some pillowcases to match the quilt I've already given to my younger daughter. So a small dent has been made there! Last night I managed to quilt some on the red & pink quilt made from donation & stash fabric. Nothing new is in this quilt, as I had some largish pieces of batting I stitched together.

grann of 6 01-19-2020 06:05 AM

I had found some blocks left from a quilt I made for bed, so I decided to use them up and make another quilt, this one for charity. The blocks are brown/blue and neutral miniature gatherings for background. I ended up with a quilt just short of 60X80. I found a piece of one of the prints to use for border, another for binding, and even found backing in the stash, so 6 1/2 yards from the stash plus 252 orphan blocks out of the stash. The blocks alternate Indian Hatchet and 4 patches. Can't decide what to do next.

Thank you but I can't take all the credit. Used a layer cake from my stash and some leftover tan/beige from a charm pack.

Grann of 6, great use of stash! You've been very productive.

So.... thrift store confession time. Hubby and I both found a couple of things we rather liked after bowling on Sunday but didn't want to pay full thrift store price and we noticed that they would be included in the sale going on today. We took the risk that they wouldn't be there today -- and they weren't, but we found a bunch of other nice things going to a total of 4 Goodwills today (and I skipped one of my favorite ones, wrong direction)! A couple things on "the list" of things we hope to find, a USB vinyl to digital turntable, it was on the special sale and under $20, new in the box.

We both found some nice clothing items, I got a lovely light weight/indoor jacket by Jones New York in unworn condition and a perfect fit on tag for 1.79! Hubby got a shirt brand new with store tags for the same, along with some other things.

And yes, there was some fabric. Picture one are two pieces, the price tag had been taken off but they sold them to me for $5.00 total. I have some of the fabrics in that top already and plenty of options to add a border and make a twin sized donation. I think that's a disappearing 9-patch??

Picture 2 are some vintage fabrics -- the beige is odd, 40" wide, a border print of sort -- maybe meant for pillow cases? The other two are both 36" wide, the zig-zag fabric I have in my collection from before in Black and Bright Blue. And I think the floral is pretty ugly but will add a nice zingy border or binding or something for my friends and their 30s fabrics. They were all on minor markdown, about $1/yard. I seem to become helpless in overcoming my desire for vintage.

The final picture shows a really lovely 100% cotton made in India bedspread?/huge table cloth?? that I got on tag day for $1.79 and the pieced center I got a different store for $2.00 that I can expand with my black fabrics to fit that backing. The same person had turned in several variations on the square, the others were different colors and different stages of completion, one just needed binding for a wall hanging.

In my case, I know that unfinished tops and UFOs count as fabric additions. But as the peanut butter cups would say, still not sorry!

retiredteacher09 01-20-2020 06:19 PM

Iceblossom: You manage to find good buys on nice fabric! Way to go!

I finished a top today and will give it to my church group tomorrow to finish. It used 3.9 yards of fabric. About 1/2 of the fabric was from my stash and the other 1/2 was from 9 completed blocks found in a donation. Since it will be going out of my house, I include the 9 blocks in my fabric used tally. Lol!

I will be jumping off the wagon sometime in the near future because I need some earthy brown and mosey green to have on hand as blenders.

ckcowl 01-22-2020 08:38 AM

I’m just starting a new Quilt of Valor quilt and pulled 8 1/2 yards of fabric out of the stash for the top. Yea! I’m also using up a bunch of jelly roll strips in another project. I will figure out the yardages when I finish piecing the top. I hope the momentum continues.

A five yard bundle and assorted leftovers from my stash ready to layer and quilt:). Got stuck on my "Road to Florida" top, figured out what I did wrong so back to that.

So Pretty, tohkatz68. Bet it feels good to subtract some of your stash to make this top. Quilt on!!

petthefabric 01-22-2020 08:20 PM

I bought today. In Nov, I'll take a class with Nancy Crowe. Supply list is many yards solids in assort colors. This sounds like an open ended exemption to add to my solids supply. Ah! No! Plus they had some at 50% off. Guilty? A smidgion.

Now back on the wagon.

yes. One of the great improvements in the new format is: in a quote, after the member name, is a blue arrow. If you click on that, you will be taken to the original post. So if you want to see a pic of that quilt, just click on the blue arrow. HTH

I'm having a little trouble shopping in my stash. My choices are limited and my project does not come out too well. I've really tried to not buy, and such is the temptation as Lolly's and Yoder's are eleven short miles up the road. I'm using out of the stash, but I sure don't see it going down.

tohkatz68, Lovely quilt in blues and a great use of your stash...of course, I love anything in blue.

I had to pick up backing fabric for the Merry Mayhem quilt I participated in. Luckily on of my LQS has a tremendous selection of “sale” fabric at 40% off and I had no problem finding something to compliment the quilt top.
