Making potholders using fabric not “quilt worthy”. Given to food banks and other charity outlets. At any rate it’s not living with me anymore.
|
A lady was moving to smaller quarters and used her stash to make over 60 pillowcases which went to a local nursing home so every resident got a new pillowcase.
|
Two very good ideas, tranum! We have a local second hand shop that sells used donated items (has a great book section) and a sack full of new potholders may sell well for the shop.
|
My favorite quilt shop in the Greater Tampa area has a special sale today. Three yard bundles for $20. Need to go sew until they close.

Yesterday I nearly succumbed to bluprint’s special 35% off everything in your cart including sale items and member discount on top! I really do need some lights and light to medium light blenders, so I found two fat quarter bundles that looked about right and also their fatquarter batik box, put them in my cart and was thrilled by the price- what a deal for 30 yards of fabric !!! Then I deleted them from my cart and went back to the UFO I’m trying to finish quilting. I have a garment sewing class at my LQS on Tuesday- I’ll hit up their remnants section to get a selection of lights that will fill out the gaps in my stash without being way more fabric than I actually need or have storage space for. Rob |
Krisb/Rob…excellent display in strength and fortitude!!! I totally get it. I received the monthly newsletter for one of the shops in town and they advertised 40% off precuts...one night only for 3 hours only......omgosh…...that would have been a disaster for me if I had attended. But, I didn't go and, instead, painted a welcome sign for my front porch. lol... it was killing me tho….

Everyone is doing so good. I purchased a yard of fabric to finish a quilt for our retiring choir director. All I had left over was a 5X11" piece, so I think I did pretty good at not adding to the stash. And I used about 7 yards from stash. I posted a pic in the UFO thread.

Rob, you are a quilter of strength and discipline! Good for you for not adding to what I suspect is a pretty deep stash. |
We're close to the end of January 2020, & people are holding strong! Keep up the good work on using stash fabric & not adding to stash. I've packed some of my fabric but cleverly left it accessible so if I find some time to sew a little bit I don't have to buy new fabric. I have some blocks left from a quilt & I plan to make pillow cases to go with the quilt. All the fabric for them is together so I can work on that once I bind my red & pink quilt.

Excellent idea, Conchalea, to keep some stuff handy. I did the same and it proved to a great de-stresser.
This is the 9th project from my FQ bundle challenge. I used a scrap piece of cream grunge as well as a purple binding left over from a quilt project. Do you guys keep leftover bindings, too? Those come in so handy in my sewing projects. I dislike making binding...lol... I decided to make new pillows for living room so I hope to get, at least, 2 more pillows. This is 18". |
Your pillow is really pretty, Teen. I also save all sorts of bits, binding, batting, etc. I've used some batting strips to pack around dishes!

Beautiful pillow and quilting, Teen. I love seeing all the neat things you have made from one fat quarter bundle!
I also save binding scraps, batting scraps, etc. and they all get used eventually. Rob |
My current project is “I Spy” quilts for Child Protection Services & my box of children scraps is getting lighter ! Working on #4 right now.

I've been caught up in the Bonnie Hunter Frolic madness and have made about zero impact on my stash so far this year. In the good news side of things, I have almost finished treating that huge bag of hand dyed fabrics I bought last year. Have one small batch of the lightest fabrics left, last couple of days I've been working with some of the really dark stuff. The problem is that it is now usable fabric so it is stash addition at this point. The Frolic project used the brightest of the fabrics and I still see the original project I saw in the bag, an brownish-orange/green large scale masculine sort of camo log cabin. There is at least one more project worth of fabric but so far it is remaining silent.
One of the ladies in my Tuesday group did take some green fabrics from me, not enough to notice. In return/addition I gave her the one small handful of 30s fabric I had in my stash, it went to join her larger collection. I have some options for her today for a border, but again, a yard or two doesn't even get noticed around here. I've been good/unlucky about my thrift store purchases, nothing to report since the last one. This past weekend I was faced with severe temptation, a whole bunch of really nice fabric had been donated but I spoke sternly to myself -- I don't collect Christmas fabric any more, even if it is metallic embellished Laurel Burch. Regret it a bit... It won't be on mark-down for another two weeks and it won't last that long. |
Great job everyone on your determination not to buy fabric or buy smartly. I’ve been tempted many times, but just looked at my ufo and wanting to start list and change my mind. Hoping to make it to April before buying for any new projects. As a saying I’ve started using, “Time will tell.”
Anyway, enjoy sewing everyone. |
Cute pillow, Teen!

Our grand nephew became a dad this week. Little Parker is my FIL's first great great grandchild, so I dug through his shirts and made this little quilt for him. FIL always wore chambray work shirts and always had a red or navy bandana in his back pocket. The bandana fabric is perfect for binding. Backing is a cozy flannel also from stash. Total used not counting the shirts 4 yards.

That's a precious gift OKsewglad. Lovely anyway but the shirts and meaning so much more!

Teen, your pillow is gorgeous!
oksewglad, what a wonderful quilt and family treasure. |

Oksewglad.....such a precious quilt for your nephew. Sure to be treasured for a lifetime. I love stuff like this. Well done..
Project #10 - Fat Quarter Bundle Challenge.... One more pillow to make and, hopefully, I'll squeeze a table runner out of the scraps too. This pillow is the perfect pillow to pull out some 1 1/2" strips stashed away. I didn't have a pattern but, if interested, strips should be cut 1 1/2" X 3 1/2"....6 across/6 down = 18" finished. Easy peezy.. I think pillows makes great gifts. I've made many for gifts....but this one I'm keeping.. Lol |
I see your coveted polka dot fabrics in there, Teen! Or as my friend's young niece calls them, 'poppa dots'. Pretty pillow.
|
Teen, great pillow
|
oksewglad, That is one of my favorite patterns! What a clever way to make a memory for Great, Great Grandpa and a new little boy in the family.
|
Nice finishes, Oksewglad and Teen.
|
Thanks all; I washed the quilt before taking the pic so it is all nice and clean for the little one. Now to send it over East.
Ten projects Teen! Fantastic and the last as good as the first! |

So... this year so far I'm holding to my fabric buying just fine but I think I'm going to change some emphasis. I still intend to work with my Civil War and Metallic stash collections, but I'm really becoming inspired by my bag of hand dyes I bought (and admitted to) last year now that the work of fixing the dyes has been done and I still have all this fabric left after the Frolic Mystery project.
I'm picky about my workmanship and I didn't make my super fancy-dancy Mariner's Compass or Pickle Dish or New York Beauty or whatever master quilt before my eyesight became more challenging, but I think I can make something pretty spectacular with my remaining fabrics and the cover quilt of this book for inspiration: https://jankrentz.com/store-details.php?ID=2 If that link doesn't go through, it's Jan Krentz, Lone Star Quilts & Beyond. One of the ladies in my Tuesday group brought the book to pass on to the others and I took it awhile ago but you know how it goes... it got covered by fabric but I found it again the other day. Actually the hand dye stack was on top of it. As designed it's a more of a medallion setting for me, 46" square made with 2.25" strips, going to play with it some at 3" cut and some border options. This is doable for me, basically careful fabric selection and just a lone star with some PP blocks, I can do this level of PP and maybe it would make me feel better about working on the blocks for that Darn Barn quilt (that's the current name "darn barn"). Also in my planned and kitted out sets of fabric is a Lone Star Sampler, made from I think 2" strips and 3 stars across for 9 total. That one will be using blue and white snowflake fabrics. |
Cool finishes Ok and Teen.
I leaned over the side of the wagon on Tuesday, but it was a planned lean and I didn't actually fall off. I needed to buy fabric for a class and also replenish my lights and lightish mediums. I ended up with 13 and a half yards of fabric, mostly in remnant pieces. 3 and a quarter yards are for the class project and will be used up within the next couple of months. The rest of the pieces are batiks that will work as light or light-med. blenders. I saw lots of fabric that I really loved, but was able to resist buying any "just because" pieces (even from the remnant pile). Five or Six years ago, (before I discovered the fabric moratorium) I would have come home with a lot more fabric and only a small portion of it would have been useful pieces to replenish gaps in my stash. Yippee! Rob |
I went into the lion's den today. Only Hobby Lobby, not my LQS. We have a new Marine in the family, so I need to make a quilt. I sent all my patriotic fabrics to Jane in VA who does QOVs. They had nothing. So it's either check the LQS or wait until Tuesday when I travel 50 miles to see my physical therapist. The facility is in the same mall as JoAnn's. I don't need much - I will mix in a lot of my scraps, so it won't be too serious.
|
Iceblossom, I made that quilt & love it! Mine isn't perfect, it has some ripples, but I don't care. It hangs on the wall in my bedroom.
|
Rob, good job on purchasing thoughtfully. It's nice to know this moratorium helps us buy mindfully.
|
I did go into my LQS yesterday but walked out with notions that I needed, bees wax for my quilting thread and two thimbles. I did not even look at the fabric! Looking forward to constructing something new soon.....from my stash.

Thank you, everyone!
Iceblossom....looking forward to seeing something "spectacular" with your bye fabrics. I have not challenged myself with dyeing yet but I've seen your Frolic fabrics and they were yummy. Well done, Rob & WMUteach! i love participating in the moratorium for that very reason. We have some beautiful stuff in our stash FQ Bundle challenge is getting down to bits and pieces with a few colors that are larger. I thought I would be sick of this bundle after 11 projects but I love this bundle. Here is Project 11.... drew this out on draft paper so I could end up with an 18" pillow. I made my pillow form using an old sheet...an idea from someone from the "Mission Organization" thread. Brilliant idea.... |

I also went into Joann's. I feel very victorious. I'd bought a shirt and looked for a long time for something to make it special. Had to discard a few ideas that would have cost about the same as the shirt. And I have an idea to make an over shirt. Bought just enough to do this.
It's a success because I stepped into temptation and didn't fall. Now if I do that with food. |
