For added incentive, can we add a Group Tally Goal per month? I found that gave me an extra push to feel I was contributing to “the community”. There were many binding stitches happening at 11:00 pm on the last day of some months!

Maybe an annual goal of 220 for the group, divided into monthly goals, with higher tallies in the first 9 months (before holidays)?

Anybody else favor this idea? I’d be happy to do the work of setting group goals and counting finishes on the 2nd or 3rd of the month.

I'm game with this idea! Let's join forces and show those UFOs who's boss! (smiley face :)

Sync 01-05-2020 12:48 PM

Okay, I'm in. Let's just say I have a bunch of UFOs that have been begging me to finish them. I figure I can get lots of encouragement and some gentle (or not so gentle) pushing from everyone here.

Conchalea 01-05-2020 01:50 PM

I'll announce 2 completions for Jan 2020! On Jan1, during VQW, I finished binding a small wall hanging & a lap quilt. The lap quilt is Surprise Pinwheels, from MSQC, that I quilted in May & set aside. I don't know why I put off binding-it really doesn't take long! The WH is an art deco piece I designed, with the idea of making a quilt. The test block convinced me it was to be 1 of a kind, so I added borders, did some minimal quilting, & put on binding. I like it, but not enough to make an entire quilt. It will decorate my new (to me) house when I move. Those are my only UFOs at this time...

petthefabric 01-05-2020 02:08 PM

From Post #1 by Conchella, "Whether your UFO is a few months old, or 20, or more (?) You are the one who decides what is or isn't a UFO." So I'm defining mine as any quilt I've started on (cutting) and then put aside for 2 + months. This encourages me to get it finished before I loose interest. With that definition I've got 12 in my sewing room. What's out in the LA room? Probably another dozen. This is part of downsizing that takes perseverence.... I need a lot of practice.

Conchalea 01-05-2020 02:08 PM

I'm in favor of a tally. It helps everyone to know each finish adds to the group count.

Conchalea 01-05-2020 02:13 PM

Wow, Pet, I'm impressed by all the quilts you've worked on! I'm trying to keep mine under control, & this thread really has helped. At this moment, I have 1 top completed, just today, & some pieces started for another top. Piecing is my favorite part of the process, so it would be easy for me to complete a top & forget about it. I dont want to move a lot of incomplete quilts, so i hope to buy backing & binding fabric tomorrow for the finished top.

Bugaroo 01-05-2020 02:39 PM

I'm in toooo! This sounds so motivational... both in encouragement and completion!

1. Need to finish piecing a queen quilt to match husbands grandmother's needlepoint (need to get it framed!)
2. Need to complete last years Christmas throw -- half way done.
3.Taking a collage class later this month for a MOOSE quilt. Have the fabric!
4. Taking another class for Hunters Star. Have the blue batik fabrics. Planning on adding Koi fish along the borders.
5. Have a jelly roll sewn together but it needs something more
6. Quilting as you go Farm Girl 2 queen

zozee 01-05-2020 03:40 PM

Let’s do this group goal thing, since the feedback has been all positive thus far. I’ll do my best to keep track and post.

Please help me by PM’ing me your personal total of UFO’s completed. Do this either as you finish each one, or by 11 AM EST on the first day of the next month. That way I won’t have to scroll through a ton of posts or worry about missing some. I will post a group total on the first or second of the month, as my schedule allows.

To get an accomplishment under our belts, I suggest picking the UFO that is closest to being finished. Go ahead and finish it or donate it or cross it off your list once and for all. It’s like paying off the credit card with the lowest balance on it.

Group Goal for January is 22. Get busy! We’re in this together!

WMUTeach 01-05-2020 04:56 PM

Thanks for being our record keeper. I was really motivated by the monthly finishes last year. Knowing others are posting monthly totals is just enough peer pressure for me to get the next one finished. I have not made a list of what is considered a UFO, but like all of us here, I have plenty. I am currently working on a hand quilting piece that is 20+ years in the making. I'll share the whole story when it is finished. Shooting for February to declare it done.

UFO Group Tally to date

We are off to a great start! To date we are at 4.

1/1 Conchalea.....2
1/3 Quossum..... .1
1/4. dmo....... 1

We have 18 to go. Tell us what your personal goal # is for January and what you’ve chosen to start with.

My Goal is to complete 1 donation quilt and get a friendship quilt sandwiched —after finishing grandbaby’s quilt for shower in two weeks.

Teen 01-05-2020 06:45 PM

Thanks, Zozee!! My January goal:

1). FMQ Hexi quilt and bind that puppy.
2). Prevent UFO on current project (just need to sew on borders) by taking to LA (I ordered the backing today cuz I didn't have anything in stash to match and I'm a "matchy girl")
3). Pull out incomplete UFO/BOM project box and get on it..

carriem 01-05-2020 07:16 PM

My January goal is to:
#1. Complete a t-shirt quilt top (someone else is quilting). I supposed it could be considered an UFO since I've had the t-shirts since last May! I just didn't need to have it done until April 2020 so kept putting it off.

#2. Make a list of UFOs...sorting by stages (need quilted, started sewing, started cutting, fabric/pattern bought)

#3. Finish a quilt to donate...someone gave me a bag with two started quilts in. I am not even sure how far along they are so need to figure out where they are. I think one might just need binding...

retiredteacher09 01-05-2020 07:39 PM

My January goal: To finish the top on my design wall. Once it is done, my church quilting group will finish it. I would like to finish it within the week.

oksewglad 01-05-2020 09:05 PM

January UFO goals
1. Quilt DS/DIL quilt...backing is pinned to the LA. I think I will have to repress the top as it's been folded up for so long
2. I usually make 3 small quilts for GK school fundraiser the end of the month...will try to find a suitable UFO for one of them.

sewbizgirl 01-05-2020 09:29 PM

I'll join again... Maybe I'll get something done! I still have the same 5 or 6 bed sized personal quilts to be quilted and bound. Some are several years old.

I'd feel a lot more motivated if the picture posting thing was resolved.

NZquilter 01-06-2020 05:06 AM

I don't think I'll have a finish for January. DH has asked for a queen size quilt for our bed. I spent last year making quilts for our children and then some family members for Christmas. He said now it's our turn! I have never quilted a queen size before, so I'm kind of nervous of doing it on my home machine. Anyhow, I pulled a scrappy UFO from the project draw to make large enough. My January goal is to finish piecing all the blocks.

countrymaid 01-06-2020 05:11 AM

I'm in. I haven't finished a UFO in ages. I did sew 6 t-shirt dresses and 3 aprons for DGDs for Christmas. I know I have multiple laptop quilts to find and finish. Thanks for the challenge. I'm motivated this year.

Motorcyclemad 01-06-2020 07:02 AM

I am in again. I managed to get 20 done just in the last seven months of the year. 8 of those were UFOs  I haven't been on since just before Christmas, but I was able to get 3 more done before the New Year-2 Moratorium and 1 UFO.

I almost got a second UFO but after getting the strips sewn, I saw that I needed to rethink it a little. That means that its cousin will also need to be tweeked a little. I will need to take stock of what UFOs I have left, but my January goals at the moment are:

Embroidered Wildlife #1-Tweeked
Embroidered Wildlife #2-Adjusted
3 Quillows- Tops are done-need quilted
2 Saturday Samplers-Became UFOs last November.

Judith1005 01-06-2020 07:13 AM

I didn't finish any UFO's last year. Although, the year before I finished 8. I had help with the quilting. I think I need to be here as I have over 20 UFO's that need to be finished. I have 2 old projects that are sitting with their backings ready for quilting. 3 are with a quilter awaiting their turn and 2 new projects are sitting with their backings. I do have 1 new one started that needs to be finished before I pull anything else out so it doesn't become just another UFO in a long list of UFO's. Then, I think I will adopt Granof6's idea of doing an old one and doing a new one ect. I don't quilt any of my big quilts myself. I prefer to send them out. So, the goal is to at least have 8 to 10 more quilted this year. For me, at least having a finished top sitting in que to be quilted is not a UFO any longer. As It takes awhile to save the money for the quilting. I usually stall at the border stage of every project. But, for this thread, I will only count finishes that are completely finished with binding attached. I'm also on the Fabric Moratorium page as well.as I am compulsive hoarder and store fabric instead of using up what I have. So, hopefully, I will be able to add a few nice finishes to your thread as well. I look forward to seeing all old pretties.

joe'smom 01-06-2020 07:31 AM

My goal for January is to finish the binding I'm currently working on, get a label on and wash and dry the quilt. I will also be working to finish an En Provence that I started last year (not a UFO). Once that is out of the way I will be able to focus more on UFOs.

happylab 01-06-2020 02:49 PM

My January goals: 1) Finish trimming and bind 2 black batik twin quilts. 2) Finish a Halloween twin quilt. I have most of the sub blocks ready to be sewn together. 3) Finish a Pink and Aqua sampler twin quilt for my sister. 4) quilt and donate an I-Spy throw. And that should be all for this month. #-4 projects. This one is questionable since I have a few other projects I will be working on.

My yearly UFO project is the 365 day Challenge. (I know Kathy has had this challenge going for at least 4 years and she started it again this year). This year I will get the top together at least. 3-4 years ago I collected, bought fabric and printed out all of the patterns. I did about 10 blocks last year (and lost the bag with the finished blocks). This year I'm going to get it completed. I am determined. I'm organized this year. As the saying goes. I'm also wanting to complete 2 very old UFO. Both are over 20 years old. So back to finishing projects, cleaning house and cooking.

grann of 6 01-06-2020 03:26 PM

Well, i don't know that i will set monthly goals. My goal is to just get some of the kitted quilts done, and the few UFOs done, but am not going to stress myself by expecting too much. i did finish one U.FO and today I finished a kitted top that i would consider a stash buster for the moratorium. Tomorrow i will try to get that ready to be quilted, then i can pull out another UFO to do next. I have some quilts to quilt on the longarm for a friend, so that will delay the progress of working on quilting projects. But I can get it all done in good time.

Rhonda Lee 01-06-2020 06:18 PM

Thanks for the UFO thread! I always join, and it has helped me considerably, but I seem to not post as much as the rest of you. I'm always impressed with what you do. Awesome work going on all the time. I'll try to report in more often this year and maybe keep that tally increasing a tad. Good luck everyone!

zozee 01-07-2020 04:42 PM

Whoop Whoop! Grannof6 reported via PM that she finished a UFO on Sunday, 1/5.

1/5 Grannof6 —1

We are now at a total of 5 with 17 to go for the January goal of 22, Who can finish 1 of theirs by Saturday?

Yay Dedmac!

I’m working on 2 that will actually remove 4 UFOs from my list. One just needs quilting- I sandwiched it yesterday afternoon and need to iron to make sure basting spray is good and dry. The other needs a back and I don’t have enough of anything I want to use, so that will have to wait for a trip to the LQS.

Here it is, 4 bowl warmers that should have been done by Christmas of 2018! Now just to get them to the cousins.(insert smile here) And it only took 3 needles.

zozee 01-08-2020 08:03 AM

Good job, Dedemac! Your 4 finishes bring us to 9 !
Who will be next?

Mariposa 01-08-2020 09:52 AM

I'm in! Am hoping to make good progress and finishes for the year. My biggest UFO is for our Cal. King bed. Blocks are done and sewn together. Need to finish and add borders, piece the backing, and cut binding strips.
I have several other projects in the making, and I will not be counting my UFO's. Kinda scary! lol
Am also sorting and organizing so that I will have a good amount of "light duty" sewing I can do. I am facing neck surgery in Feb. to replace a couple of discs. No lifting allowed. Oh boy!

Irishrose2 01-08-2020 10:06 AM

I would like to join. I need some motivation to sew anything that doesn't have a deadline.

Vasilisa 01-08-2020 02:30 PM

My January goal is simple: finish my first memory quilt.

Really pretty fabrics used for these bowls, Dedemac. They turned out great. Congrats on getting these done...

Quossom, where did you find that planner sheet? Tried googling it but couldn't print it from the site I found it. Thx.

Claire123 01-08-2020 07:56 PM

Please count me in, also. I am definitely on board with making a dent in my WIP's. I've organized a list and will try to keep starting new projects to a minimum until I can make a serious dent in the list. I just have too many things that are either almost done or at least half done. As I remember the list has about 10 quilts on it.
One is going over to a long-armer tomorrow!

Quossoum,
It came up fine. I have only ever seen one other and could not locate it either.

Thanks, Quossum, i made some copies. I couldn't find it either.

I was going to ask if other people's UFO's donated to you count, in which case I have four full size tops and one of my own. Count me in!

emcay 01-09-2020 05:50 AM

Thanks Quossom! Now I need to decide how many sheets to print. I hope I can fit my UFOs on 2 pages... plus one for my "kitted" projects I haven't even begun. 🤔

NZquilter 01-09-2020 07:42 AM

I have never used Bonnie Hunters "leaders and enders" system before, but decided to start this year. (https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005...-and-hows.html ). I'm using a second UFO as my L&E on my queen size scrappy UFO I'm working on. This way I'll get two UFOs finished at a time!

I do enjoy the idea of leaders and enders. I don't know why I didn't do it earlier!
