Aaqi challenge for qb members (first annual?)

In honor of the 10,000th little quilt donated to AAQI, and in honor of the upcoming 3rd Anniversary of the QB Doll Quilt Swap, QB members are challenged to create and donate, collectively, 250 little quilts to AAQI. The time period for this Challenge is Jan. 1, 2012 to July 30, 2012, for quilts registered with AAQI during that time period.

AAQI is the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative. It was founded in 2006 by Ami Simms, a quilter in Michigan. AAQI is entirely run by volunteers, so its expenses are low. The money raised by AAQI (more than $700,000 to date) funds promising research into the causes and cures of Alzheimer's Disease.

AAQI raises money by accepting donations of Priority: Alzheimer's quilts and selling them -- on its website, through monthly online auctions and at the huge quilt show in Houston each November.

Now that AAQI has reached 10,000 donated little quilts, it's time to spur them on to the next thousand! QB members can do this!

Want to play? Here are the steps:

1. Visit the AAQI website, www. alzquilts.org, to READ the RULES for a Priority: Alzheimer's quilt. You will see that the rules are few but important. The great thing is, that you can create a quilt in any style, any fabric, using any inspiration that comes to you, as long as you keep it within the rules.

2. Make your little quilt -- or maybe more than one! They really are fun!

3. Register your quilt with AAQI on their new, easy Quilt Registration page.

4. Wait patiently for the AAQI volunteer to send you an email with the Registration Number for your quilt and easy mailing instructions.

5. Then, post a picture of your little quilt and its Registration Number in this thread, so we can keep track of how many little quilts we send in.

6. Relax in the glow of having done a very good thing!

I've made 20 little quilts for AAQI so far, since I learned about it from Chele last May, and I'm hooked! That's why I'm posting this Challenge for everyone. (PatriceJ approved this Challenge.)

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS: You can post them in this thread, and I'll do my best to answer them. Or, you can PM me, LeslieFrost.

I have an Album of My Little Quilts for AAQI, which you can look at, or search the tag, Miniature Quilting, and you'll see lots of others. As I find other QB members with Albums of AAQI quilts, I'll add the links to this thread.

Hope you'll join in!
:)

Gladie, Thanks for sharing these picture sites with us, I really enjoy looking at others creations. They are just great little quilts. Just want to thank everyone that donates these little quilts to help find help for those that suffers from this horrible disease.

SewExtremeSeams 04-09-2012 07:33 AM

Leslie, thank you so much for this challenge. I have been meaning to make quilts for AAQI for a long time. But, I hate to admit it, it just keeps getting postponed. Your challenge will help me be committed and get going. Thank you again. :)

Everose 04-09-2012 12:08 PM

Leslie, please count me in on this. Haven't ever made something this small, but with Mom having Alzheimer's - we need to do whatever we can.

Di

Dragonfly Nana 04-09-2012 02:08 PM

I am for waiting for "written permission" from pattern designer - which I know will come - then on to the sewing!

candi 04-09-2012 03:24 PM

What a coincidence that I found this thread now! I have just finished registering two quilt and waiting on instruction to mail. They will be my first two to AAQI, but hopefully not the last. I enjoyed making them and I love small projects, and what a great cause!
Thanks for starting the challenge, I will be posting pictures after I get a response.

hobbykat1955 04-09-2012 03:33 PM

I finished two tops today...will put them together tomorrow and then contact for registration no"s.

LeslieFrost 04-09-2012 05:52 PM

What a fabulous response! Thanks to you ALL!

Thanks for adding other names, oksewglad. I just couldn't remember them while I was writing this post. Also, be sure to PM me with the reg. numbers for your recent quilts to AAQI. I'm going to set up a Group Challenge on the AAQI site, and I need the reg. nos. to link the quilts to that Group.

Hooray! Good start!!

LeslieFrost 04-09-2012 05:54 PM

Oh yes, Everose! I did dedicate one of my recent quilts to you and your Mom, but it's not pictured on the AAQI site yet. I'll try to let you know when it is.

Love to pp, need to get some patterns out!

n2scraplvr 04-10-2012 09:39 AM

Thanks, Leslie, for starting this! Also, I'm glad you are posting it to their site under Group Challenges! The 9 minis I sent in are from these 2 threads:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t179645.html

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t181190.html

The registration #'s are: 9687 - 9695

I've done one more improvisational mini since then and will get pics posted of it today. I was surprised how a great big heart just showed up in the mini, a real surprise at the end! It seems hearts are always finding their ways into my quilts somehow and I suppose it's making a statement of my great love for quilts and flowers. :)

oksewglad 04-10-2012 10:15 AM

Yeah another AAQI contributer heard from! Thanks for sharing your work, n2.

LeslieFrost 04-10-2012 03:18 PM

Thanks for the numbers! I tried to do the Group Challenge form on the AAQI site last night, but it did not go through for some reason. I will try again tonight and hope to have better luck.

What a RELIEF(!!) to know that each one of us do not have to make 250 quilts! haha! Somehow I thought I was committing to do 250, but you meant for the group total to be 250! haha! They are so addictive that it probably would not take me long to do 250. Anyway, here is one more I finished 3/22, but am holding this to send in with a bunch more that I need to make. The butterfly applique is from DM's estate as I am trying to use up some of the things in her stash I find. It's vintage and 40+ years old. It's fun to just do a wonky flower with no planning. However, I thought my focal point were the flowers, but when I got done, all I saw was the great big heart between them.....lol....it pays to plan ahead sometimes. Here's the mini called Heart and Flowers.

LeslieFrost 04-11-2012 06:12 PM

I love the Hearts and Flowers! Good inspiration for others -- just begin with something, and stop when it's 9" by 12"! When you register this, be sure to note the use of your vintage fabric -- that should make it more attractive to buyers. And we want them to sell!

moonrise 04-11-2012 11:27 PM

I made 6 little quilts over the last couple of months just for this organization, put them in a bin for safekeeping, and promptly forgot about them. Yikes! :o Thanks for the reminder!

I just registered them, and will post photos when I get the registration numbers. This is the first time I've done this, so hopefully I did it right. :) (Edited to add: Here's a sneak peak.)

Both my great-grandmother ("Mammaw") and my grandmother ("Granny") developed Alzheimers in their later years. It was heartbreaking to see them lose their abilities. I dearly hope that a cure can be found (and soon!) for this horrible disease.

JoanneS 04-11-2012 11:53 PM

I'm in - definitely want to make several as several members of my family, including Mom, have had this terrible disease. The sooner we find a cure, the BETTER!!!!!!! Mom was diagnosed at age 92, but showed signs of dimentia for several years before. I'm not sure any more that I want to live that long!

moonrise 04-12-2012 12:54 AM

Make that 7. I found another one I'd started, but hadn't quite finished. It's complete now. :)

Patricia14 04-12-2012 01:28 AM

I just sent my mini quilt this morning and they say it’d take about one week.
Thank you for this opportunity Leslie!
Patricia

Thanks for sharing. I love the variety of techniques you have used in all of these.

Just lovely! What a good way to use up scraps.

SewExtremeSeams 04-12-2012 05:26 PM

N2scraplvr, I love your scrappy idea for a flower, sew creative!

Moonrise: wow, thank you for sharing your little quilts. They are so well done.

My Dad is 85 and is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He used to be able to remember such details about his growing up years. His 8 siblings relied on him for details and of course, I loved hearing about all of the details. Now that is all gone and he is more or less confined to a wheelchair or bed. We are thankful we still have him and that he remembers who Mom, his wife of 65 years, is. :)

n2scraplvr 04-12-2012 06:05 PM

Hi Linda! So sorry to hear about your dad. We hope a cure will be found soon for so many suffering from this dreadful disease. I don't know anyone with Alzheimers, but love helping to raise funds. My family was all lost to diabetes and heart disease. Lots of cures needed. We are glad you joined this challenge! Thank you so much for your kind words!

Thanks everyone so much!! Everyone's minis are just so adorable!! :o

I got permission from the designer! I plan to do three (one each in pink, purple, and yellow) This pic is from the original one I did for a friend who lost her mother. Do you think it will do well in those colors?

LeslieFrost 04-12-2012 06:36 PM

DragonflyNana that is wonderful! Those 3 quilts will be great! Very clearly graphic, so they'll show up well in a small format picture on the website. These will be a great addition!

n2scraplvr 04-12-2012 07:17 PM

They'll look great in any color!!!:o

Dragonfly Nana 04-13-2012 02:57 AM

I finally had the change to look at all the pic in the link and all I can say is WOW...you ladies have created some truly amazing minis for AAQI

rwquilts 04-13-2012 03:34 AM

Dragonfly Nana, your little quilt is so pretty! I am still on the road and anxious now to get home to get started on these. I have been drawing different designs to while away the hours on the road...have 8 designs and names so far. Still 3 days from home. I haven't been this excited to work on something in a looooong time! Will be in Kalispell today and plan on doing a bit of fabric shopping tomorrow before heading home on Sunday. There are a couple of great quilt stores there. :)

hobbykat1955 04-13-2012 03:46 AM

I have 5 mini's done and will get them sandwiched and quilted by beginning of next wk. Then register and mail off...Thanks for posting and prompting us to join in.
