GramE, you're too funny this morning!!! lol lol lol I like your magenta, and those dark and light purple swirls are sooo cool.

Nice 4 patches everyone.

Mine are done, but I'm not doing a full set. I'm going to try something different w/ this years mystery if it doesn't work I always can go back and make more sets.

The magenta isn't bad but in a bathrobe for Miss Liberty, it might be a bit too bright! :p :D

I like the way you break the rules. I'm the obedient child. ❤️

It doesn't look too bright to me. Bonnie said something about the "magenta" fabric standing out from your other choices

Ha ha ha, GramE! :D

Connie, love your neutrals. She said they would make a "bold statement" in the quilt, so I think you are on the right track.

I'm doing this with a lady in my local quilting group. It's her first, too. She is a genius with scrappy color, but is totally afraid of scrappy neutrals. It's something you have to work up to, and some people will never like it. I do, tho! The wilder, the more interesting, to me.

Kassaundra 12-01-2016 08:46 AM

I'm w/ you GramE, scrappy isn't in my wheel house. I have seen controlled scrappy that I don't mind, and orphan or sampler (or swap) quilts I like but like even more when there is some "order" established that I can latch on to or some constant tying it together. I have been saving scraps and hope I can bring myself to do something w/ them.

I was late starting, but got my 4 patches done with one day to spare. Enjoying everyone's colors & this thread.

It's been a busy week but I finally found the time to finish pressing/twirling my 4 patches. Ready for the next clue.

sewbizgirl 12-01-2016 02:02 PM

Perfect 4-patches, Podunk. I love your black and whites!

Everyone's 4-patches look so nice! I finished mine yesterday. I did the two-toned neutral, but for me it's still scrappy, as the fabric was scraps:) I can't wait for tomorrow's clue! How early do you think Bonnie will post??? 5 am:)

Bluebonnets 12-01-2016 02:43 PM

4-patches are so cute!

peaceandjoy 12-01-2016 03:12 PM

GramE - Your fabrics are lovely and your magenta is one of the prettiest I've seen.

peaceandjoy 12-01-2016 03:14 PM

Podunk Princess, love your neutrals!

lawsonmugs 12-01-2016 03:36 PM

They are all so pretty.

sewbizgirl 12-01-2016 03:58 PM

Wonder what color we will be playing with tomorrow...

joe'smom 12-01-2016 04:26 PM

So pretty, NZquilter!

Just getting started on them but here is what they look like. And I found it much easier to spin the centers than I thought. My first new skill on this quilt!!

What pretty, elegant fabric, Jeanne. These look terrific.

I have really enjoyed seeing everyone's progress on clue #1, and I am eager to see what clue #2 brings. Please keep the pictures coming, because I am inspired by the work that I see.

Those of you who are planning for something smaller than 87" x 87" can use the area (about 7500 sq. in.) to approximate the number of units to make. Half the units will make almost 3800 sq. in., or about 62" x 62". That would also be close to 54" x 70" if you can make a rectangular layout. We can't calculate this exactly at this time due to the nature of mystery quilt projects.

I am making a second, smaller version of the quilt by making the prescribed number of units, but making the units smaller (half scale). I am nearly finished with my second set of 4-patch units. The larger units are my original neutral 4-patches that I posted earlier this week, and the smaller units are for the half-scale version with the values reversed. In this version, I'm using my darkest fabrics for the 4-patch units. I don't know how this is going to turn out, but I am excited to give it a try.

Happy sleeping until clue #2 is released. I don't think I'll get much sleep this weekend.

Splinter, You are ambitious, making two tops. :-) Your idea of 'area' gives me the idea that you are a math major. Math is not my strong suit. :-) It seems like Bonnie H. creates her patterns based on blocks quite a bit, so probably the end layout will work ok for a rectangle too. I'm hoping so, because I intend to make a twin size (rectangle).

Looking forward to getting on with this project. It looks like a lot of us could use a clue twice a week. :-p We've really cranked out the foursies quickly.

Kassaundra 12-01-2016 08:10 PM

Oh goodness no 200 + units a week is plenty!!!! lol lol lol The only reason I am finished is I am only doing 1/4 at this time, I have an idea I want to try so I'll end up making more after the reveal and after a little experiment to see if it will work. It is not combining these blocks w/ the boom swap blocks like I was thinking, I have a new mad scientist idea.

joe'smom 12-01-2016 09:30 PM

Splinter, you're making a mini! That's impressive!

I will not finish clue #1 on time, but I have a good start. I'll move on and start clue #2, and get back to #1 as I'm able. I'm rooting for some green for tomorrow. Some of my greens I've had a very long time, and am happy they are finding a place in 'En Provence.'

sewbizgirl 12-02-2016 05:45 AM

New clue is up!

NZquilter 12-02-2016 06:10 AM

For those of us who used just two neutrals in the 4-patches, which neutral are you going to use in clue two? I need some suggestions. I'm thinking maybe making half of the unites with one neutral and half with the other. Any ideas? This is so exciting!!!

QuiltingVagabond 12-02-2016 06:24 AM

I am using lots of neutrals, but if I had 2 I would make half and half.

So I have to decide which of 3 magentas I want to use... and I need to use only one as they are very different and would not read as the same color.

letawellman 12-02-2016 06:42 AM

Guess I know what I'll be doing tonight and tomorrow.

Now, I'm trying to remember if I have the AccuQuilt die for this... I know I have the TriRecs tool, but the die would definitely be faster. :D

Kassaundra 12-02-2016 06:46 AM

Woo Hoo I guessed right. Someone asked yesterday what colors we thought we would be using today, I thought (but didn't post) the constant and working w/ triangles. Now off to draw my shapes in paper.

NZquilter 12-02-2016 07:05 AM

I got my templates printed out. I'm SO glad she took the time (hours!) to investigate which server would print out the exact measurements! I never use Chrome, but it does print out the exact size using it... Whew! Thank you Bonnie for saving me the headache! I am no good at all with computers and it can take me hours just to scan a picture... serious!

pennycandy 12-02-2016 07:06 AM

I'm getting a "HTTP 404 Not Found" message when I click on the part 2 link on Bonnie's blog. Am I the only one? The pdf link that sewbizgirl posted worked for me when I clicked it.

When reading the pdf version I found it a little confusing on how to place the first two pieces together. Not sure if the directions were incorrect or a sentence or two is missing. If you look at the picture you can figure out how the pieces should go.

Just wondering if Bonnie pulled the page down to make corrections and it will be up later?

QuiltingVagabond 12-02-2016 07:17 AM

On FB, Bonnie said it was just heavy traffic and to try again. I didn't have any problem accessing the site.

All2Pieces 12-02-2016 07:17 AM

pennycandy - Bonnie's link has a major error if you use Chrome. you can use the link posted above to get to the pdf instructions or go here:

http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2016/...ce-part-2.html

Hope that helps. Cheers!
MJ

Skipastitch 12-02-2016 07:21 AM

Penny, I got the same thing on her site but was able to follow the link from FB to get it.

Does anyone have the side kick ruler? If so do you think it will work for this block? I am hoping it will work out for me since I do have it but none of the others BH rulers.

No idea what neutral I will use......

Bluebonnets 12-02-2016 07:33 AM

What lovely big pieces, and only 100.

I was guessing we'd use the purple this time.

Which magenta would you use?

joe'smom 12-02-2016 07:53 AM

Quilting Vagabond, I have a similar magenta dilemma. I never found one that seemed just right and have two to choose from. For what it's worth, I think your first one there isn't quite bright enough. I'm liking the one on the right better than the center. It has the sparkly variation of darker and lighter, and I think it would make some fabulous points.

pennycandy 12-02-2016 07:55 AM

Thank you ladies! I am able to bring up the link now.

QuiltingVagabond, I'd rule out the one on the left. I like a big contrast between the middle and side triangles and I think the left one would blend with the neutrals. These pieces made a big impact on the Celtic Solstice and Cathedral Stars. Both of these patterns used a light and dark. My thoughts for what it's worth.

Thanks for your opinions, I made a Cathedral Stars and used a dark magenta for those points. It looked great! Wish I had more of it LOL

Since the magenta goes with the neutrals I can see the one on the right playing nicely Lisa.
The one on the left was my original (and favorite) but it may not be the right one for this project.

Antdebby1 12-02-2016 08:20 AM

Hi! Do you know which AccuQuilt die it is that we can use for this step?

Thanks!

I have a question about the magenta too, if you all don't mind giving me some suggestions. The black and pink floral fabric is what I want to use, but I am wondering if it looks to much like one of my dark greens with little toys in it. I love that fabric and think it gives it some extra interest, so I really want to keep it. Please tell me what you think? With or without the green toy fabric? My fabrics are all FQ and scraps, but the dark greens are at least a yard each. I hope my pictures didn't load the size of a house here!

trish b 12-02-2016 09:29 AM

NZquilter, the second one is better. Love all the fabrics.

Jeanne S 12-02-2016 09:33 AM

I don't have the Trirecs ruler. I do have the easy angle rulers from last year's mystery quilt--will they work somehow???. I am "angle challenged".
