NZquilter, I don't think the toy fabric looks at all like your constant. It looks great with your turquoises and contrasts well with your yellows. It would be a bit busy if it were placed next to your constant, but chances are you will have some leeway in placement, so I see no problem with using it.

Jeanne, the easy angle won't work for this. Do you have a JoAnn's nearby? They probably have the Tri-Recs tool. Otherwise, Bonnie detailed some other alternatives at the end of the clue posting (but I didn't bother to read them, as I have the rulers).

Which magenta would you use?

I'd go w/ the one on the far right, it has the most "pop"

I love that fabric and think it gives it some extra interest, so I really want to keep it. Please tell me what you think? With or without the green toy fabric? My fabrics are all FQ and scraps, but the dark greens are at least a yard each. I hope my pictures didn't load the size of a house here!

I wouldn't use both that bright toy green and your chosen constant, I would switch one or the other (if it were me I'd chose a different green.)

What is the angle of the "easy angle" ruler? This is basically a 54 / 40 or fight block so the angle is 54 degrees if the easy angle is 45 or 60 (like I think) it won't work.

Do yourself a favor and get the Tri Recs ruler. It will make things a lot easier and it's a ruler that you can use for other Bonnie patterns or possibly your own designs.

Jeanne S 12-02-2016 10:44 AM

The Easy Angle is a 60 degree angle, I think, it looked too wide to me. Oh well, I will just have to give in and found the Tri Rec ruler set on Amazon Prime for $8.50, won't break the bank!! Should be here on Sunday, have plenty of 4 patches to keep me busy until then!!! Thanks for your help. I have never been good with figuring out angles for some reason.
I am also second guessing my pastel substitution for the magenta, so this will give me a little more time to search for an alternative. ;)

Well I finished enough squares for a picture. Here is my clue 1 and 2 w/ the as yet unused fabrics, still including the b/w cat fabric still deciding on it.

sewbizgirl 12-02-2016 11:57 AM

Definitely the one in the middle! It makes your other fabrics sparkle.

lawsonmugs 12-02-2016 01:07 PM

Kassaundra, I don't know if that will be the pattern but it looks great. I'd use it in another quilt if it's not.

Podunk Princess 12-02-2016 01:09 PM

Kassaundra, your fabric choices are intriguing. Can't wait to see more of your piecing for this quilt. Love the out-of-the-box thinking. You are much braver than me. I'm still more of a "controlled scrappy" person even though I've made several of Bonnie's quilts.

If it was me, I would use one or the other, but not both. I would worry that the design would get lost if these two are next to each other, as the are both bold prints with multiple colors in them.

pennycandy 12-02-2016 01:49 PM

Kassaundra , wow! That red and black combination really stands out. If you flip the triangle squares you'll have a star like in Bonnie's Cathedral Stars pattern.

Quilting Vagabond, I love your Cathedral Stars colors. So pretty!

Thank goodness I picked up the Tri Recs rulers when they were on sale at Joann's. Celtic Solstice is on my "some day" list. Never thought I'd need it so soon.

Finished my triangles in a square. Whew. They about cleaned out my neutrals. So, I guess that's it for those?

Love your musical neutrals, and the harlequin layout.

Thanks, they were fun to work with and I'm tempted to go get some more just to have in my stash. I have very little left.

givio 12-02-2016 05:06 PM

QuiltingVagabond, definitely the center magenta. No contest there, for how I'd choose. Your polka dot fabric in the dark purples pile is too similar to the left and right magenta choices. The left one, the flowers, is too close in value to your light purples to contrast with them alot. Bonnie's color palette is a complete contrast. You could use the print on the right if you want more pattern, but if so, then I'd eliminate the polka dot fabric.

joe'smom 12-02-2016 05:41 PM

Kassaundra, that looks smashing! I think your quilt is going to be awesome.

cant wait to see how your quilt develops!! Switching the lights for darks appears to be giving it a whole new look! Great job!

Great guess, Kassaundra... Can't wait to see what you end up doing. I know it will be something novel.

I have my clue nearly done. Only needed 50 for the half sized version, and here are my first 30 sewn and the other 20 waiting to go next.

SBG, That looks cute, like flying geese. Wouldn't it be nice if she's planning rows, and they were set in rows like you have!
Mine are half done. I've sewn one side, and just taking a break before sewing the other side. Me too, it's not so much to do, when you are only doing 50.

Yeah, I'm getting ideas on 'diminishing flying geese' just by looking at my photo! My magenta looks cranberry red in those pics, but it's a lot more pinky in real life.

I didn't want to sew strips to have the same prints together, so I cut squares, and shuffled. I ran out of bobbin thread when sewing the last five. Lucky me, only five! :-p

I'm using my Redeye to sew the Mystery too. I get much better seams when I use her.

Kassaundra 12-02-2016 08:13 PM

Sewbiz, your clue 2 look good.

I'm in, but have to finish up a couple of other things before I jump in with both feet. I did shop my stash and found everything but the magenta. So I did end up buying some. made a few 4-P just to see how they will go. Using my Singer Redeye Treadle to make this quilt. Plus I have friends giving me all their scraps all the time so I should be able to do this quilt. Oh and the magenta was on sale too.

joe'smom 12-02-2016 08:55 PM

My magenta is not playing well with my small print neutrals. I found some larger prints on my neutral shelf, but they are kind of wild, so it could be weird.

LOL, mine may end up being weird too... especially my wild 4 patches. :D I'm just gonna embrace the weirdness.

Very nice fabric collection, Tucky! Add some neutrals and you are good to go!

Thanks, Kass...

What a fantastic looking arrangement, Kassaundra.

Lovely patches, SBG. I have wondered if our quilt will be in rows. Bonnie is showing pictures of rows of lavender. Maybe maybe not.

Great fabrics, tuckyquilter.

Kassaundra 12-03-2016 04:04 AM

I was thinking what a cool new arrangement for a one block wonder quilt.

Looks amazing. A diamond in the center, maybe another bigger diamond around that. You rebel, you.

SusanSusan33 12-03-2016 05:35 AM

I am so glad I bought the tri rec ruler who knows when. It's sitting unopened in my sewing cabinet. Who hoo!!

I am loving seeing everyone's pretty fabrics, completed works and blocks getting together. I have A mid day work Christmas party to attend today. I need to get motivated. I'm making brownies and a salad. So I will try to tackle this step tomorrow after church.

At at first I thought the redeye was a tired quilter. Lol. Literally. It's been one of those weeks at work. I'm a va nurse (LPN) and it was quite a week. Artwork and raising 16year olds at home. I fell asleep on the couch at 8pm and when my daughter got home from babysitting st 11:30 she told me my eyes were red. I was Going to join in the "redeye" conversation. Guess not. I did see for fun on my grandmother si get treadle sewing machine. Such great memories!

For those who want to use the go die its the triangles in square 3" #55027. The triangle will be a little different.

Good morning, everyone!

I thought I would get up earlier to squeeze some sew time in before my husband is up. Didn't work, I stayed up too late last night, but did get some sew time yesterday evening.

I am still working on my 4 patches. I have ALOT of neutral scraps, so it has been fun getting those together. I added some zingers with bigger prints, and I am excited about how it will all come together.

I do have an Accuquilt Go, and dies that my husband bought me last Christmas that I forgot I had!! Well, at the mention in an earlier thread about the die to use for this mystery, I looked...and I have it!

Hopefully, I'll get to have time to play with it later today.

For now, hubby and I have home projects to do, and we'll be off to Lowes to get what we need.

Have a happy sewing day!!

Splinter 12-03-2016 06:43 AM

I just finished my last 21 4-patch units from clue #1, but I must make a final decision on which constant fabric I want to use before I tackle clue #2. I'm going to work on another project for a couple of hours before I getting back to this mystery. Maybe then the decision will be easier.

Another magenta choice post! HAHA. These are the three choices. Top two from my stash and the bottom one I purchased at Joann's. Trying to get a magenta more into the violet range but not purple. What are your thoughts?

On my screen these look red, the top one at viewing distance looks orange w/ the yellow flowers, and the middle one has a slight fuchia look. Can you post a pic w/ these and your other quilt fabrics?

NZquilter 12-03-2016 07:23 AM

I have all of clue 2 cut and ready to sew up. I asked my DH what he thought of my greens and he decided we will go to Hobby Lobby and buy some more today. He didn't like the green toy fabric either. Hehe, oops! I am looking forward to going fabric shopping with him!
