Miss Rita, what beautiful fabrics. The darker yellow seems to bring the group to life.

I ordered half yards of several magentas last night. Only one is a true magenta. The rest I would characterize more as cerise pinks. I'm so excited to see them!

AnnieQuilts 10-30-2016 06:41 AM

I've followed Bonnie's mysteries but never done one. All you early bird enablers have me thinking this is the year to jump in. Beautiful fabrics you've chosen.

Krisb 10-30-2016 08:40 AM

My purples, lavenders, magentas, and neutrals are done, but I need more greens (my greens are too blue) and yellows. And maybe a single magenta instead of a mix. Like Alice, will wait until final choices are made to post a pic. And, darn it all, the day after the first clue, I leave for Orlando for bridge nationals. Well, wouldn't be the first time there was a sewing machine in my hotel room.

I didn't have any purples or magenta so I'm thinking maybe blue with red constant. What do you think?

quiltsRfun 10-30-2016 09:38 AM

dmarie, I think it's a great combination.

Here are my fabrics. I didn't get the paint chips, but I think the colors work together. The constant I chose is only 1 1/4 yards long, so I have to be accurate with my cutting, which is always a challenge for me!

Everything came from my stash. Hurray!

I love seeing everyone's fabrics!

dmarie and audsgirl, your greens and yellows are close in value. One thing Bonnie mentioned was having a good contrast between the yellow and green. Do you have any darker greens you could add? Otherwise these look great to me. Love the blues, dmarie.

I've decided to go with the Provence colors. I'm really drawn to the dark warm greens with the purples. Here is what I've pulled from my stash. I probably won't be able to use some of the large print lavenders. I will look for some small print pinky lavenders and a few more purples, maybe a couple of dark yellows. Will have to wait for the magentas to come in the mail.

KalamaQuilts 10-30-2016 11:27 AM

I'm feeling the urge to use some recycled shirts for this year. Will have to color pile them to see if there is enough contrast

QuiltingVagabond 10-30-2016 11:44 AM

Beautiful choices so far ladies! What I love about Bonnie's mystery quilt is the PROCESS and my personal evolution along the way.
My first thought was that I don't have many purples in any shade, but there is that bag in the back of the closet that has purple and yellow florals (think pansies, daisies, irises in packed florals). Ok, so maybe this year I will only use one fabric per color... but one of the things I most admire about Bonnie's designs is the way the many shades/genres/values play with each other!
So I think maybe this is a way to go outside my comfort and since I am shopping for fabric anyway, I pick up a few other lavendars and purples (so much for using the stash right? LOL) but in my mind I am thinking I want another packed floral for the hibiscus/magenta constant and I find one online.
When it comes in, I will ponder this evolution some more. Isn't this the best fun? :-)

Thanks for your input. Sometimes the camera sees what you can't. I think your right.

Here are the fabrics that I have picked so far. I have not measured any of them yet to see how much is there. I know I have enough lavender, purple and yellow. I will have to get some more greens as some of these are only scrap pieces. Not sure about the magenta. Neither fabric shown is enough so I guess I will have to look for something else. I have plenty of neutrals to pick from yet. Anything seem out of order here?

Belfrybat 10-31-2016 06:04 AM

Love the fabric choices shown so far. I'm on the fence about doing this mystery. I did two of hers and never finished them as I got too far behind. The one I regret not doing was the Celtic Solstice, as it turned out to be my favourite.

I probably have the fabric for this one if I stick to single pieces for each colour. I know some of the "movement" is lost that way, but it sure makes the piecing easier for me.

And I love the blue option. I'm not a fan of purple, but this quilt wouldn't be for me anyway.

Decisions, decisions....

Podunk Princess 10-31-2016 07:17 AM

Beautiful fabrics AlvaStitcher. I'm loving the deep purples in this quilt.

The Allietare mystery was my introduction to Bonnie Hunter, and I made the Grand Illusion quilt this summer. Her blog and quilt cam have inspired many quilty ideas since the last mystery, and so I am eager to get started on the En Provence mystery. I found a picture of Cezanne's Mont Sainte Victoire and used it to inspire my fabric selections. I'm still working on it, but this is my starting point.

I'm still on the fence about joining this year. I do know if I participate, I'm going to select different colors as purples and greens aren't heavy in my stash.

joe'smom 10-31-2016 08:20 AM

Thanks for sharing your fabric inspiration, Splinter! It's such fun to see things like that. Lovely fabrics!

OK....I think I've got it now. Spent some more time in the stash this morning and made some final decisions. Luckily, I even had something perfect for the binding (bias print stripe fabric at top of photo) so I'll only have to shop for the backing fabric. We have 24 more days until the first clue posts. I'm ready to get started.

Whittles is again carrying the mystery quilt fabrics. https://www.whittlesfabrics.com/fabr...ystery-bundles
I ordered the neutrals and will see what I can pull from my stash before ordering any more.

Will this do?

joe'smom 10-31-2016 12:52 PM

Those are so pretty, char7439. Your values are different from Bonnie's, though, which means the pattern may not emerge as clearly as you would like, or may look a bit different from her quilt. That magenta is simply stunning.

Sandra-P 10-31-2016 01:15 PM

Yes, I am in again with this one too. Last year was the first time for me to do the Bonnie Hunter mystery and I loved it. I would have never attempted it if I had seen the pattern first, but somehow having the clues presented the way she does makes it manageable. My neighbor came in while I was putting the rows together and initially thought they were tiles! Tomorrow will shop for my fabric. This year should be fun too. The one thing I am going to change with mine is that I am keeping my neutrals all the same. I am too OCD to have them be different. As far as the colors go I didn't mind those being different, but having different neutrals drove me batty.

Good for Whittles! I see they're even doing two versions, a bright and a CW.

Miss Rita, your neutrals look so elegant, and what a perfect binding fabric.

My magentas have shipped!:D

char7439 11-01-2016 07:39 AM

I'm using the colors that match the paint chips. I might add more as time goes on.

Pulled all the fabrics I need from my stash and so proud of myself! I couldn't get the purples to show their true colors but there are light and dark purples. I didn't add the whites to the photo. Finished all of my WIP, I am so ready to start :D

Another first time Bonnie Mystery quilter here!
here are my fabrics - any feedback welcome!
All from my stash except the magenta. The piece to the right doesn't
seem to fit in the greens or yellows so I'm setting it aside as a possible binding.
Happy Huntering everyone!

Podunk Princess 11-02-2016 08:26 AM

Lovely fabric, Tweety. I bet it's a great feeling having all those WIP's done, too.

Welcome to your first BH mystery, Path50. Your fabric looks great and I love the magenta piece.

NZquilter 11-02-2016 10:16 AM

I am really enjoying watching everyone's fabric choices and seeing all the comments here. I probably won't actually do this mystery, 1) because I don't have enough of any fabrics in my slowly growing stash, and 2) I can't afford to buy any right now, unless a thrift store suddenly supplies something:) But I am certainly going to print each clue and put it on my bucket list.

Sandra-P 11-03-2016 07:04 AM

NZ Quilter,

If you PM me your address I will send you some fabric! I love to help out where I can and I don't want anyone to miss out on this because of this issue. I don't know if you will like my choices but I have the color paint chips and will try to match as close as I can. It will at least get you started. Sandra

NZ, why not make a smaller version? Cut it by half for more of a lap quilt or table topper.

That's a great idea! That will cut the work in half too:) I think that's what I'll do.

NanaHoney 11-03-2016 05:15 PM

This will be my second BH mystery.. Have to decide if I want the purple or if I should use blue. There is no purple in our home. Looking forward to getting started.

happylab 11-03-2016 06:07 PM

I picked out most of my fabric from my stash. Like many of you I choice to buy the focus fabric. I did not have fabric like that in my stash. I need to wash and iron my fabric over the next few weeks. I'll post pics as we sew along. Going back to lurking status.

Barb in Louisiana 11-03-2016 07:45 PM

This looks like so much fun. I'll be pulling fabric tomorrow. Probably for a lap size.

Where Bonnie is using purple and lavender, I am using blue and light blue. Where she is using yellowgreen I am substituting orangeyellow. She has yellow and I yellowgreen. Finally for her constant she is using magenta and I am using purple

Because there needs to be contrast between my orangeyellow and yellowgreen, I decided to make the orange yellow a constant. I thought of using a rusty orange but decided it wouldn't be a strong contrast with my greens. It is hard to discern in the picture, but the orangeyellow fabric is a pinstripe and I think it is going to pop against all the blues in the quilt. My constant is purple and it is a shot cotton and very pretty.

My thinking is that in Bonnie's colors she seems to have two sets of contrasting colors (according to the Ive's color wheel) purple and yellow green also magenta and green. So I have chosen blue and orangeyellow and purple and yellowgreen. Bonnie's post shows pictures that were her inspiration and she will have used lots of different fabrics in each color but this is how I interpreted it when trying to chose mine

well I've changed my mind - I think I will substitute this purple as it has some lighter magenta on it and more movement so it will contrast with my blues better.... Opinions, welcome.
Did not mean for pics to be so big.

quiltsRfun 11-04-2016 03:12 PM

I think that's a better choice. Your original purple was pretty close in value to you dark blues.

sewbizgirl 11-04-2016 09:06 PM

Love your final selection, Pagzz. I need to sub colors too, just haven't figured out what. I'm not a fan of purple.

joe'smom 11-05-2016 07:13 AM

Tweety, your fabrics are gorgeous. That magenta works so well with your other colors.

Pagzz, I love those shot cottons, but I agree the second purple is a better choice.

My DH and I have been remodeling our new home. Lots of trips to Lowes for paint chips etc. We are pretty much finished with the remodel - thank goodness. The other day I said to my DH that I needed to go to Lowes for paint chips. His response was, "PAINT CHIPS, what for now?" I told him for the mystery quilt and we both had a good laugh. He thought I wanted to paint more rooms! Nope, done with that!
