Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt 2017 - En Provence

Ready....Set.....Go! The Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt 2016 has begun. She posted the Introduction today on her blog and you can find that here: http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/en-...e-mystery.html

This year's colors were inspired by Bonnie's trip to Aix en Provence, France and they are vibrant shades of purple, green, yellow and magenta, as well as all those neutrals she uses to tie things together. The first clue will go live on Friday, November 25. Subsequent clues will be posted on her blog every Friday after that until the reveal clue. As always, she has not stated how many clues there will be but previous quilts have averaged 6 clues and finished the first week of January. If you are really busy during the holiday season, just download the printable version/PDF of each clue so you can work on it later. Keep in mind that the clues are taken off the blog on February 1, 2017 and will be available only by purchasing a digital download after that date.

This is the place to post comments and photos of your fabric choices and sewing progress as we take this mini-trip to France with Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. I'm looking forward to another great sharing thread while we all take this journey.

COPYRIGHT REMINDER: Please do not re-post copies of any of the clues for the mystery quilt and/or photos of work that is not your own.

First poster! Can't decide on fabrics for this year, pinks and purples are just not in my stash much.

I am so excited about this mystery. I've never worked with this color combo before and didn't think I had these colors but... I did! I need about 4 fat quarters of green and I'm there. Hoping to go shopping today and finish my gatherings.

Stash diving is exhausting! Lol

Nice fabric choices Emily!

Thanks Miss Rita for getting us going again this year! One of the constants in life, along with the changing of the seasons, is you leading the way on the BH Mystery!! Looking forward to another great few months of comments and pictures!!

AlvaStitcher 10-28-2016 09:46 AM

I picked up 2 extra sets of color chips. If anyone needs them and does not have a handy Lowes, PM me and I will put in mail to you. First 2 requests get them.

Jeanne S 10-28-2016 09:47 AM

Thanks for starting this thread again! I am looking forward to this year's mystery. These colors may be a challenge for me, but I learned a lot from the process last year. Hope to go get my paint chips soon!

Does anyone see a problem with these? The yellow with the small red apples? The pink too dark?

ETA: Sorry it's so big :(

I am really excited to try one of Bonnie's Mystery Quilts! Although I love bright colours, I am going to try something different for this quilt, I am thinking blue, green and purple.

I have a question for the second bonnie hunter ruler. Does anyone know if it is required? With shipping and exchange it would cost me $45+tax. I'm not sure that I can justify that for a ruler.

Barb in Louisiana 10-28-2016 10:53 AM

I'm with you lizzie3. Gonna go see what I got.

This is my opinion on specialty rulers only, not the specific use of this rule in this quilt since it is all a mystery and can't be addressed specifically. Specialty rulers make your life easier and can make some assembly faster, however there is nearly always a different way to get to the same place.

Podunk Princess 10-28-2016 12:06 PM

Welcome back to all of the returning members and welcome aboard to all of the newbies doing a BH mystery quilt for the first time. It's going to be so much fun as we see everyone's fabric selections and progress as the clues are released.

Please remember, there are no "dumb" questions. We are all here to help each other and be supportive as the mystery unfolds. If you don't want to post it on the thread, you can always send me (or any of the others) a private message.

Emily (Bluebonnets) - Your fabrics are beautiful. I especially like your magenta selection.

Skipastitch - Your fabrics are looking good so far. You might want to re-think the yellow with the scattered large print design. Bonnie indicated in her last quilt cam that those types of fabric don't usually play well with her mystery designs.

lizzie3 - The specialty rulers listed are wonderful to use and make cutting easier, however, there are many different ways to make half-square triangles, flying geese, and triangles in a square, so you may already have a ruler in your sewing room that will do the job. Bonnie's clues always include the size of the sewn units so all you need to do is use whatever method or ruler that will get you to that measurement.

I started going through the stash yesterday and pulled a few fabrics but still need to look through some more shelves/bins. The magenta is going to be a problem for me because it's not a color I usually work with. I found about a half yard of something that would work but that's not nearly enough for the constant. I'll have to make a trip into Batesville next week and visit Marshall's to look for something else (poor me ... lol).

joe'smom 10-28-2016 12:34 PM

Yippee, we're on our way! Thank you, Miss Rita, for leading on this adventure!

I'm so wishy-washy! All year long I've been resolving to try using constants in a different colorway this year, just to see what that's like. But as soon as I saw the gorgeous Provence palette, my intentions were swept away. I think I will probably go with Bonnie's palette, although I did pick out an alternate colorway in constants. I have lavender and purple that have been sitting in my stash for years, so this would be the ideal opportunity to use them.

It sounds like Bonnie's ruler won't be available until after the mystery, anyway. I'm interested to see what it's like.

Onebyone 10-28-2016 12:35 PM

You don't need the new ruler. It's a combo of the two she always used. I never used them anyway. I prefer my own way of making hsts and flying geese. I make one block then decide the best way to make all the pieces. I like to convert the block sections to paper piecing or use my Go dies that are close to the same size.

JeanieG 10-28-2016 02:24 PM

I picked up my color cards from Lowe's today. Now to see what I have, and what I need to purchase. Thank you Miss Rita for starting this thread again this year!

I'm trying to decide between three options. The first two are shopping my stash. The blue or green would substitute for the purple. The brown would substitute for the green and the orange would be the constant. The colors for the green aren't very accurate. The last one would be all solids from Connecting threads.

letawellman 10-28-2016 05:42 PM

I'm thinking about doing this mystery... I've never done one, and I LOVE this color palette. So, a trip to Lowe's tomorrow, and then hopefully some of the organizing I did last week will supply the fabrics. We'll see how this goes.

IrishNY 10-28-2016 06:30 PM

QuiltsRfun,

I love love love your second set of colors! They would make a gorgeous quilt.

Anyone who knows me knows I have a love for cheddar/plum! I picked up my paint chips today at Lowes while I am visiting my daughter in New Jersey. I'll be home to Texas two + weeks and I'll check my stash for 1800's dusty pinks and mossy greens. Unless I'm able to visit some quilt stores here in NJ!!

quiltsRfun, I think the blue option might be the better of the stash options, because the blue reads darker than the green. That is a beautiful solids palette. It would be very intriguing to see one with a dark neutral.

This is what I am thinking of if I were to use constants. The brown would be my purple, the camel my lavender, the dahlias my yellow, the green is green, the constant would be the dark blue and the dot would be my neutral.

I'll need to find a magenta if I go with Bonnie's palette. There is nothing in my stash that comes close.

I've been leaning towards the blue but I'd kind of like to try the dark background and solids. I've got myself on a pretty strict fabric diet but I may have to cheat a little. If the site wide 20% off is still good I just may go for it.

joe'smom, I love your floral.

Sophie2 10-29-2016 03:35 AM

SheriR, are the numbers on your cards the Sherman Williams numbers?

QuiltingVagabond 10-29-2016 04:22 AM

SheriR, I love your dusky color choices!

sweet 10-29-2016 05:53 AM

I am looking forward to finding the Kona Cotton, Moda solids, and embroidery floss equivalents for the colors. It makes it easy to carry the floss to find more fabric!

SunlitenSmiles 10-29-2016 06:31 AM

found all in my stash (plus extra choices) except for the constant, only a portion of a fat quarter...sooooo...found one on line that I absolutely love, and ordered it..when it gets here I will post a picture of all....if my camera is over its' tantrum.:sew::wave:

JanieH 10-29-2016 08:07 AM

I have never done one of one mysteries but this may be the year. I love the colors and everyone always seems to have so much fun doing them. Plus they are gorgeous quilts!

They're a lot of fun and you always learn something.

AlvaStitcher 10-29-2016 09:04 AM

I pulled fabric this morning from the stash and it looks like I have enough except for possibly the green. I'll need to organize them a little better and then take a pic to post. I have an abundance of yellows. Shows how much I love bright colors! LOL

happylab 10-29-2016 10:14 AM

Thank-you for posting this site. I usually like to follow along with her mysteries. I guess this week I will go through my stash and shop for missing fabric. This year I can actually follow along. No traveling or medical issues to slow me down this year. I'm leaning toward, blues, green, and purple, with browns and tans. I was really excited a few weeks ago when I noted she had visited France this year. I had a gut feeling I would like her colors. And I do. :):sew:

Someone over on Bonnie's facebook group (Quiltville Open Studio) posted the DMC embroidery floss equivalent colors for her selected paint colors:

#335 - magenta
#327 - dark purple
#210 - light purple
#743 - yellow
#987 - green

Hope this helps.

Tweety2911 10-29-2016 12:29 PM

Thank you for starting this thread. Very happy to be a part of this Mystery. Enjoying all the beautiful fabrics shown. I have lots of purples/pinks/greens but would like to use the turquoise fat quarters I have. Still mulling over my colors. I look forward to seeing more posts :)

toverly 10-29-2016 12:35 PM

Looking forward to this one! Picked up my paint chips at Lowes. The Sherwin Williams colors don't have numbers just names. I may have to sub on the Magenta. Not my favorite color but we will see.

This is my initial pass through the shelves/bins looking for Bonnie's colors. Still need to look around for more and make some final decisions on what stays and what goes back and then pull the neutrals. I'm considering a change in the magenta/constant fabric but will have to let that idea "marinate" for a while.

gramquilter2 10-29-2016 02:21 PM

Have done Bonnie Hunters quilts before but did not realize there was a group on the QB. Am looking forward to this one.

quiltsRfun 10-29-2016 03:41 PM

Podunk Princess, nice selection.

Sophie2 10-29-2016 04:08 PM

I love seeing the selections that have been made. I always chuckle to myself when I see fabric that I have on shelves! Great minds think alike!

TwinRiverFarm 10-29-2016 04:58 PM

I have picked up the color chips, shopped my stash (but may change the constant color, although I have it), found a good box to keep it all together in, and given hubby fair warning of his impending abandonment. Now to finish off any current projects and clean up my sewing room. It is so much more fun to start a big project when it is neat and free of dog/cat fur! Especially when I know that won't last long.....

audsgirl 10-29-2016 06:02 PM

I pulled the fabrics today and will be able to use only stash fabrics. That makes me pretty happy! I will try to get a photo of my fabrics tomorrow and post it. I still haven't quilted my Allietare! because I'm so intimidated by the size of it. I had made it intending to give it to my daughter who has wanted to go to Italy for a long time. But the colors of this quilt may be better suited to her, since her favorite color is purple.

I think your fabrics are terrific. Bonnie Hunter chose a more intense pink than the paint chip shows. And the yellow with the apples is great. These will make a beautiful quilt.

I'm impressed with how quickly so many have managed to shop stashes and how pretty the colors look together. Skipastich, the yellow with apples will look good with the magenta or lavender. Podunk, your colors and the variety of prints look wonderful. I'm with you, though, on wondering if the magenta is more burgundy, but that may well be something wrong with my monitor. I've found most of my greens, purples, and lavenders, and was fortunate to find a great magenta, but I'm not taking a photo of them until I find where I put more greens and purples. I love seeing other people's choices, because it makes me think a bit outside my comfort zone.
